Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro opened the season with four straight games at McComb Fieldhouse, concluding with a 70-66 come-from-behind win over Lake Erie. The 4-0 start was the best since Pat Cleary took over as head coach. The Fighting Scots won their first five games in 2012-13 under Greg Walcavich.
  • Last weekend's 74-60 win at Cheyney was the fourth straight road contest for the Fighting Scots, and gave Edinboro a two-game winning streak. The trio of Jaymon Mason (27), Keshawn Liggins (20), and Anthony Coleman (16) accounted for 63 of Edinboro's 74 points.
  • The Fighting Scots have a 6-2 overall record, the best under fifth-year head coach Pat Cleary, and are 4-1 in the PSAC.
  • Keshawn Liggins, Anthony Coleman, and Jaymon Mason are combining for 55 points per game. Each is capable of putting up big numbers. One of them has scored 30-or-more points in four games, with Liggins scoring 34 vs. Thiel and 35 against Lake Erie. Coleman dropped in 30 points in the upset of then eighth-ranked Shippensburg. When Coleman led Edinboro with 19 points at Lock Haven, it marked the only time Edinboro has not had a scorer reach 20 points.  Mason has now had 14 career 30-point games after scoring a season-high 32 points at Daemen.
  • The best thing to come out of the loss at Daemen was the return to form of Jaymon Mason. The senior guard had been mired in an early-season slump, shooting just under 33 percent. He came alive at Daemen with 32 points, dropping in 6-of-12 3-pointers while going 10-of-11 at the charity stripe.  Mason added 27 points at Cheyney, making 6-of-9 3-pointers. The senior guard boosted his career point total to 1,661 points.
  • Keshawn Liggins has had six double-doubles in the last seven games and has pulled down 10-or-more rebounds in each of the last seven contests. The 6'5" senior leads the PSAC in rebounding and ranks sevenh in Division II at 11.8 rpg. He finished with a career-high 35 points against Lake Erie, giving him two 30-point games in his first four games as a Fighting Scot.  The transfer from Idaho State fell just shy of a double-double at Daemen, finishing with eight points and 12 rebounds. Liggins also leads the team in scoring at 19.8 ppg. He has been an ironman, leading the country in minutes per game (39.4). His seven double-doubles ranks third in the PSAC and seventh in Division II.
  • Anthony Coleman is another threat to put up big numbers. A transfer from Cincinnati State CC, the 6'3" guard is averaging 19.3 ppg., good for tenth in the PSAC. He has had four games of 20-or-more points, including a career-high 30 points in an upset of Shippensburg. He is Edinboro's top 3-point threat, making 26-of-55. He leads the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game and is second in 3-point percentage (47.3 pct.), and fourth in 3-pointers made. Coleman was named the PSAC West Co-Player of the Week following the wins over Millersville and Shippensburg.
  • The Fighting Scots recently posted the biggest win in Cleary's four-plus seasons as head coach, an 88-86 triumph over eighth-ranked Shippensburg. Edinboro had previously upset 16th-ranked Indiana(Pa.), 79-77 in overtime, in 2014-15. The Scots opened the year with a 86-77 win over Thiel, then began PSAC play last weekend with a pair of crossover wins. Edinboro rallied from halftime deficits in both games, starting with an 85-74 win over Millersville, followed by the upset of Shippensburg.
  • For the second year in a row, the football team is providing a boost to the basketball team. Offensive lineman Trey Staunch, a former standout in football and basketball at West Middlesex High School, saw his first action against Shippensburg. A two-year starter at right tackle, the 6'3", 265 lb. junior joined the basketball team at the conclusion of the football season. He proved a huge asset in the recent win at Lock Haven, finishing with a season-high 10 points, including a pair of key free throws with 15 seconds remaining. Staunch is averaging 4.8 ppg. and 1.8 rpg. in just under 11 minutes per contest.
  • The combination of Staunch and Jack Frank gave the Fighting Scots plenty of production in the post at Lock Haven. Frank, a 6'8" junior, had his top game of the year at Lock Haven with eight points and 10 rebounds.
  • Mike Beck scored 19 points in the win over Millersville, and comes in averaging 6.8 ppg. with 12 3-pointers in 32 attempts. The senior swingman's biggest contributions have come on defense, as he has been assigned some of the top scorers in the PSAC.

Scouting the Golden Eagles
  • The Golden Eagles play for the first time since winning at Notre Dame(Oh.), 103-76, on Saturday, December 9. That gave them a four-game winning streak as they improved to 8-3. Lamont McManus added 19 points, while Jordan Smith and Shaq Speights each contributed 14. Jonathan Tshibuy had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Anderson has led the Golden Eagles in scoring six times, with a high of 34 points against UVa-Wise.
  • Former Univ. of Maine guard Austin Howard comes in at 12.4 ppg. and is the top 3-point threat with 22 in 58 attempts in three games. He is a 6'1" senior. Freshman Lamont McManus, a 6'5" forward, adds 11.5 ppg. and is the leading rebounder at 6.5 rpg.
Shaq Speights is one of four players with 10-or-more 3-pointers, as the 6'3" senior has made 16-of-40. The former transfer from St. Petersburg College averages 10.5 ppg. Another transfer, Jonathan Tshibuy of LIU-Brooklyn, is a 6'5", 250 lb. senior who is second in rebounding at 5.2 per game.
