The Game Story
  • Edinboro returns to action after the holiday break, last playing on December 18 against Charleston(WV). The Fighting Scots posted a 93-73 win over the Golden Eagles to improve to 7-2 overall and boost their winning streak to three games in a row. That is the best start in Pat Cleary's five years as head coach. The Charleston game was Edinboro's last against a non-conference opponent, as the Fighting Scots' final 17 games are against PSAC foes. The Fighting Scots are 4-1 in PSAC action and open up PSAC West play at California(Pa.).
  • California(Pa.) has a 6-5 record and is 2-3 in PSAC contests. The up-tempo Vulcans rank second in the PSAC in scoring (88.3 ppg.) but are last in scoring defense (90.x ppg.) . The Vulcans feature xx players scoring in double digits.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll, while California(Pa.) was voted fifth. Edinboro is ranked tenth in the latest D2SIDA Atlantic Region rankings.  
  • Edinboro opened the year with four straight wins, all at home, to climb as high as fourth in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region rankings. Following an 86-77 victory over Thiel, Edinboro opened PSAC play with an 85-74 win over Millersville, followed by an 88-86 upset of then eighth-ranked Shippensburg. Edinboro improved to 4-0 with a 70-65 win over Lake Erie, before tasting defeat for the first time with an 82-72 loss at Daemen. 
  • The Fighting Scots showcase three players capable of putting up big numbers. Jaymon Mason is Edinboro's third all-time leading scorer with 1,662 points. He broke out of an early-season slump in a big way at Daemen, notching his 14th career 30-point game with a season-high 32 points, and had a 27-point effort at Cheyney. He is averaging 14.4 ppg. Keshawn Liggins, a transfer from Idaho State, is leading the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging a double-double at 21.6 ppg. and 11.2 rpg. The 6'5" senior leads the conference in rebounding, ranking seventh in Division II, and is ninth in the PSAC in scoring. He has had a double-double in six of the last eight games and has three 30-point efforts this season, including a career-high 38 points against Charlestoin.. Anthony Coleman adds 17.4 ppg. He previously played at Cincinnati State CC, and has scored 20-or-more points in four games..

  • Edinboro's rally came up just short at California (Pa.) as the injury-plagued Fighting Scots fell to the Vulcans by a 58-52 score. Edinboro suited up just seven players due to injuries.
  • The defeat halted Edinboro's four-game win streak against Cal and a stretch where they had won five of the six previous meetings over the Vulcans.
  • Edinboro nearly erased a nine-point deficit with 3:25 remaining, pulling to as close as one point of Cal's lead at 53-52 with just under a minute remaining. 
  • Edinboro shot a season-low 29.1 percent (16-of-55) for the game, including 25.9 percent in the second half (7-for-27), while Cal season finished at 32.3 percent (20-of-62) with a 27.6 percent (8-of-29) second-half showing. The Fighting Scots made 6-of-22 3-pointers and 14-of-20 free throws, as the Vulcans shot 6-of-31 and 12-of-20, respectively. Cal held a 51-31 edge on the glass.
  • Jaymon Mason led all scorers with 18 points, going 8-for-8 from the free throw line. The game marked his eighth straight game playing all 40 minutes.
  • Sheldon Brogdon finished with 13 points, and Maceo Baston, in his second career start, had nine points and nine rebounds.
  • The Vulcans held a 33-27 lead at halftime while outrebounding the Scots 30-13. The Vulcans would boost their lead to nine points at 53-44 with 3:25 to go. Edinboro went on to score the next eight points, with Mason connecting on four of his eight free throws in the run. His last two brought Edinboro to within one point at 53-52 with 50 ticks remaining. Cal responded with five free throws for the final points of the contest.
  • Robel Teckle and Tony Richardson each had double-doubles for the Vulcans, with Teckle tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds and Richardson totaling 12 points with 13 rebounds. Rashawn Browne had 12 points.

Head Coaches
  • Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 54-60, 5th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • The 4-0 start prior to Tuesday's loss at Daemen was the best since Cleary took over as head coach. 
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. A year ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
California (Pa.): Kent McBride, Concord '06 (16-23, 2nd Year; Career: 99-86, 7th year)
  • Kent McBride is in his second year as California (Pa.)'s head coach following a five-year head coaching stint at Concord, where he compiled an 83-63 record. In his first season at Cal, the Vulcans finished with a 10-18 record and finishing seventh in the PSAC West. It was a three-game improvement over 2015-16.
  • McBride led the Mountain Lions to the Mountain East Conference championship and their second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016. It was Concord's first league title since 1997.
  • The former Concord point guard served as an assistant coach for West Virginia Wesleyan and Glenville State before returning to the Mountain Lions.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro opened the season with four straight games at McComb Fieldhouse, concluding with a 70-66 come-from-behind win over Lake Erie. The 4-0 start was the best since Pat Cleary took over as head coach. The Fighting Scots won their first five games in 2012-13 under Greg Walcavich.
  • After the four straight home games, Edinboro played its next four games on the road. The road trip got off to a less than promising start with losses at Daemen and Mansfield, but the Fighting Scots righted themselves with wins at Lock Haven and Cheyney.
  • The Fighting Scots made it three wins in a row in their final game before the holidays, returning to McComb Fieldhouse for a 93-73 win over Charleston(WV). That left Edinboro at 7-2 overall, the best start in head coach Pat Cleary's five years at the helm. The Fighting Scots come in with a 4-1 record in PSAC action.       
  • Edinboro is averaging 77.8 ppg., ranking 11th in the PSAC in scoring offense. The 93 points scored against Charleston was a season high. The Fighting Scots rank ninth in the PSAC in scoring defense at 72.3 ppg.  
  • Keshawn Liggins, Anthony Coleman, and Jaymon Mason are combining for over 53 points per game. Each is capable of putting up big numbers. One of them has scored 30-or-more points in five games, with Liggins scoring 38 vs. Charleston, 35 vs. Lake Erie, and 34 against Thiel. Coleman dropped in 30 points in the upset of then eighth-ranked Shippensburg. When Coleman led Edinboro with 19 points at Lock Haven, it marked the only time Edinboro has not had a scorer reach 20 points.  Mason has now had 14 career 30-point games after scoring a season-high 32 points at Daemen.
  • Third all-time leading scorer Jaymon Mason has had an up-and-down start to the season. The senior guard had been mired in an early-season slump, shooting just under 33 percent. He came alive at Daemen with 32 points, dropping in 6-of-12 3-pointers while going 10-of-11 at the charity stripe.  Mason added 27 points at Cheyney, making 6-of-9 3-pointers. He is averaging 10.6 ppg. at McComb Fieldhouse, but 10.3 ppg. on the road. The senior guard has boosted his career point total to 1,662 points. 
  • Keshawn Liggins has had six double-doubles in the last eight games and has pulled down 10-or-more rebounds in seven of the last eight contests. The 6'5" senior lis tied for the PSAC lead in rebounding and ranks 12th in Division II at 11.2 rpg. He also leads the team in scoring at 21.6 ppg., good for fourth in the PSAC. Liggins has had three games of 30-or-more points, including a career-high 38 points vs. Charleston.  Liggins is a transfer from Idaho State. He has been an ironman, ranking fifth in the country in minutes per game (39.0). His seven double-doubles ranks third in the PSAC and 14th in Division II. Liggins was named the PSAC West Ayjlete of the Week following the Charleston game.  
  • Anthony Coleman is another threat to put up big numbers. A transfer from Cincinnati State CC, the 6'3" guard is averaging 17.4 ppg., and has had four games of 20-or-more points, including a career-high 30 points in an upset of Shippensburg. He is Edinboro's top 3-point threat, making 26-of-55. He is tied for fourth the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game and is third in 3-point percentage (44.1 pct.).. Coleman was named the PSAC West Co-Player of the Week following the wins over Millersville and Shippensburg.   
  • The Fighting Scots posted the biggest win in Cleary's four-plus seasons as head coach, an 88-86 triumph over eighth-ranked Shippensburg, earlier this year. Edinboro had previously upset 16th-ranked Indiana(Pa.), 79-77 in overtime, in 2014-15. .
  • For the second year in a row, the football team is providing a boost to the basketball team. Offensive lineman Trey Staunch, a former standout in football and basketball at West Middlesex High School, saw his first action against Shippensburg. A two-year starter at right tackle, the 6'3", 265 lb. junior joined the basketball team at the conclusion of the football season. He has proven a huge asset, currently playing just over 12 minutes per game and averaging 5.5 ppg. Staunch scored a season high 12 points in the Charleston game.    
  • The combination of Staunch and Jack Frank is giving the Fighting Scots plenty of production in the post. Frank, a 6'8" junior, contributed six points and nine rebounds vs. Charleston. He ranks second on the team in rebounding at 6.6 per game..
  • Mike Beck scored 19 points in the win over Millersville, and comes in averaging 6.7 ppg. with 13 3-pointers in 33 attempts. The senior swingman's biggest contributions have come on defense, as he has been assigned some of the top scorers in the PSAC.
  • The freshman tandem of Alex Jay and Jaryn Simpson have provided the Fighting Scots with valuable. It was never more evident than against Charleston. Jay, a 6'3" guard, scored a season-high 13 points, making 3-of-5 3-pointers, and dished out five assists in 23 minutes. Simpson, a 6'1" guard, added 10 points and five assists in 24 minutes.

Scouting the Vulcans
  • California(Pa.) was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC West after finishing with a 10-18 record a year ago. The Vulcans come in with a 6-5 overall record, and are 2-3 in the PSAC.
  • The Vulcans snapped a three-game losing streak with a 95-88 win at Salem on Tuesday, December 19. Isaiah Lewis led five players in double figures with 24 points, adding eight assists. Terry Davis, Jr. chipped in 19 points.
  • Cal got off to a 5-2 start before suffering losses to three of the top teams in the Atlantic Region in East Stroudsburg, Shippensburg, and Fairmont State.
  • Head coach Kent McBride bolstered his roster with three transfers, and the trio rank as the Vulcans' top three scorers. Terry Davis, Jr. is the team's leading scorer at 20.1 ppg. The 6'3" senior is a transfer from Glenville State. He is second on the team in rebounding (7.7 rpg.) and is shooting 52.4 percent from the floor. Isaiah Lewis, a 6'3" senior by way of Temple, is next at 18.5 ppg. and has a team high 49 assists. Jahmere Howze was added to the interior after playing a year ago at Urbana. The 6'7", 230 lb. junior averages 18.0 ppg. and a team-high 7.8 rpg. He is shooting 54.1 percent from the floor.
  • Cordell Smith gives the Vulcans a fourth double-figure scorer at 14.9 ppg. The 5'10" senior has made 35-of-82 3-pointers and has a team-high 40 assists.
  • Cal ranks second in the PSAC in scoring at 88.3 ppg. The Vulcans have scored 90-or-more points in six games, including five of the last six games. Cal gives up 90.1 ppg., which is 18th in the PSAC.
  • Kent McBride is in his seventh year overall as a head coach and enters the game with 99 career victories. He is in his second season at Cal.
