The Game Story
  • After opening the season with four straight home contests, Edinboro will now play its fourth straight game on the road with the contest at Cheyney on Saturday. They snapped a two-game losing streak with a 68-64 win at Lock Haven on Sunday. That boosted the Fighting Scots to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in PSAC action. Making their first eastern swing for PSAC crossover contests, the Fighting Scots played at Mansfield and at Lock Haven last weekend. They would lead late in both contests, but saw Mansfield score the final eight points in a 69-64 loss. On Sunday, Edinboro withstood a late Lock Haven rally to claim a 68-64 victory.
  • This marks the final game for Edinboro prior to taking a break for final exams. The Fighting Scots will host Charleston(WV) on Monday, December 18, the last game before the holiday break.
  • Edinboro opened the year with four straight wins, all at home, to climb as high as fourth in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region rankings. Following an 86-77 victory over Thiel, Edinboro opened PSAC play with an 85-74 win over Millersville, followed by an 88-86 upset of then eighth-ranked Shippensburg. Edinboro improved to 4-0 with a 70-65 win over Lake Erie, before tasting defeat for the first time with an 82-72 loss at Daemen.
  • The Fighting Scots showcase three players capable of putting up big numbers. Jaymon Mason is Edinboro's third all-time leading scorer with 1,634 points. He broke out of an early-season slump in a big way at Daemen, notching his 14th career 30-point game with a season-high 32 points. He is averaging 14.6 ppg. Anthony Coleman is now the team's leading scorer at 19.7 ppg., good for tenth in the PSAC. He previously played at Cincinnati State CC, and has scored 20-or-more points in four games. Keyshawn Liggins, a transfer from Idaho State, is averaging 19.4 ppg. and 11.4 rpg. The 6'5" senior leads the conference in rebounding and is 12th in scoring. He has had a double-double in five of the last six games and has two 30-point efforts this season.
  • Cheyney has a 1-7 record, 1-3 in the PSAC, after an 85-47 loss at Virginia Union on Thursday. The Wolves lost their first five games of the season before surprising Pitt-Johnstown, 66-62. • Sheldon Brogdon drained seven 3-pointers, part of a 30-point effort, to lead Edinboro to the win at McComb Fieldhouse. The redshirt senior guard was making his first start of the season.
  • Jon Girvin, fresh off the football team, contributed 11 rebounds along with eight points to help Edinboro snap a six-game losing streak. Girvin, a defensive end on the football team who joined the team five days earlier, entered the game with just over five minutes left in the first half. His eight points were the first of his career, all of which came on free throws.
  • Senior forward Mikael Anderson added 17 markers, while Jaymon Mason finished with 14 points and six assists.
  • The Fighting Scots held an 82-75 lead with 30 seconds to play before Cheyney hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull to within one point with 17 ticks remaining. Following an Edinboro timeout, Girvin hit a free throw after an intentional foul to make it 83-81 with 14 seconds remaining. Cheyney turned the ball over on its next possession.. Brogdon was then fouled and hit both his free throws to put the game away for good.

The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 52-60, 5th Year

  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • The 4-0 start prior to Tuesday's loss at Daemen was the best since Cleary took over as head coach.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. A year ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro opened the season with four straight games at McComb Fieldhouse, concluding with a 70-66 come-from-behind win over Lake Erie. The 4-0 start was the best since Pat Cleary took over as head coach. The Fighting Scots won their first five games in 2012-13 under Greg Walcavich.
  • The Cheyney game is the fourth straight road contest for the Fighting Scots, who snapped a two-game losing streak with a 68-64 win at Lock Haven last Sunday. It marked the first road victory in 2017-18.
  • The trio of Anthony Coleman, Keshawn Liggins, and Jaymon Mason are combining for almost 54 points per game. Each is capable of putting up big numbers. One of them has scored 30-or-more points in four games, with Liggins scoring 34 vs. Thiel and 35 against Lake Erie. Coleman dropped in 30 points in the upset of then eighth-ranked Shippensburg. When Coleman led Edinboro with 19 points last Sunday at Lock Haven, it marked the first time Edinboro did not have a scorer reach 20 points.  Mason has now had 14 career 30-point games after scoring a season-high 32 points at Daemen.
  • The best thing to come out of the loss at Daemen was the return to form of Jaymon Mason. The senior guard had been mired in an early-season slump, shooting just under 33 percent. He came alive at Daemen with 32 points, dropping in 6-of-12 3-pointers while going 10-of-11 at the charity stripe.  The senior guard has since boosted his career point total to 1,634 points.
  • Keshawn Liggins has had five double-doubles in the last six games and has pulled down 10-or-more rebounds in each of the last six contests. The 6'5" senior leads the PSAC in rebounding and ranks eighth in Division II at 11.4 rpg. He finished with a career-high 35 points against Lake Erie, giving him two 30-point games in his first four games as a Fighting Scot.  The transfer from Idaho State fell just shy of a double-double at Daemen, finishing with eight points and 12 rebounds. Liggins is second on the team in scoring at 19.4 ppg.
  • Anthony Coleman is another threat to put up big numbers. A transfer from Cincinnati State CC, the 6'3" guard is averaging a team-high 19.7 ppg., good for tenth in the PSAC. He has had four games of 20-or-more points, including a career-high 30 points in an upset of Shippensburg. He is Edinboro's top 3-point threat, making 26-of-49. He leads the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game and is second in 3-point percentage. Coleman was named the PSAC West Co-Player of the Week following the wins over Millersville and Shippensburg.
  • The Fighting Scots recently posted the biggest win in Cleary's four-plus seasons as head coach, an 88-86 triumph over eighth-ranked Shippensburg. Edinboro had previously upset 16th-ranked Indiana(Pa.), 79-77 in overtime, in 2014-15. The Scots opened the year with a 86-77 win over Thiel, then began PSAC play last weekend with a pair of crossover wins. Edinboro rallied from halftime deficits in both games, starting with an 85-74 win over Millersville, followed by the upset of Shippensburg.
  • For the second year in a row, the football team is providing a boost to the basketball team. Offensive lineman Trey Staunch, a former standout in football and basketball at West Middlesex High School, saw his first action against Shippensburg. A two-year starter at right tackle, the 6'3", 265 lb. junior joined the basketball team at the conclusion of the football season. He proved a huge asset in the win at Lock Haven, finishing with a season-high 10 points, including a pair of key free throws with 15 seconds remaining. Staunch is averaging 4.8 ppg. and 1.8 rpg. in just under 11 minutes per contest.
  • The combination of Staunch and Jack Frank gave the Fighting Scots plenty of production in the post at Lock Haven. Frank, a 6'8" junior, had his top game of the year at Lock Haven with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Scouting the Wolves
  • Cheyney was picked to finish ninth in the PSAC East preseason poll after going 2-25 a year ago. The Wolves are off to a 1-7 start while facing a demanding schedule that has included West Liberty, Indiana(Pa.), Gannon, Mercyhurst, and Charleston(WV). The Wolves opened the season with five straight losses before upsetting Pitt-Johnstown, 66-62, at Cope Hall. They have since lost two games in a row, including an 85-47 loss at Virginia Union on Thursday night.
  • The Wolves trailed Virginia Union at the half, 42-18. They would shoot just 26.9 percent for the game. Cliff St. Juste was the lone player in double figures with 11 points. Olin Ugo came off the bench to contribute seven points and 12 rebounds.
  • Six of Cheyney's seven losses have been by 25-or-more points.
  • Cliff St. Juste is the team's leading scorer at 11.5 ppg. in four games. The 6'0" guard is out of fabled St. Anthony(NJ) High School. He was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Week after scoring 22 points in the win over Pitt-Johnstown.
  • Jeff Lewis, a 6'5" swiungman who previously played at Liberty, adds 9.4 ppg. and a team-leading 6.0 rpg. Kyle Parker adds 8.0 ppg. He is a 5'10" freshman guard.
