The Game Story
  • Edinboro (7-16, 5-14 PSAC West) aims to keep its slim PSAC Tournament hopes alive Saturday with a win at Mercyhurst (11-12, 9-10 PSAC West). Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. from the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
  • Saturday's contest means more to the Fighting Scots than just evening up the season series with the Lakers, who won the first meeting, 79-59, at McComb Fieldhouse on January 25. Edinboro kept its playoff chances intact Wednesday at Gannon, rallying from an 18-point second-half deficit for a 78-77 win. The win also snapped a five-game losing streak.
  • Edinboro has been forced to play with as few as seven players recently due to injuries. The Fighting Scots are three games behind in the playoff picture with three games remaining. The top six teams from each division qualify for the PSAC Tournament.
  • Indiana (Pa.) and Gannon have clinched the first and second seeds in the PSAC West, respectively, while Pitt-Johnstown has secured a tournament spot. Mercyhurst, Slippery Rock, Seton Hill and California (Pa.) are among the contenders for the remaining three spots.
  • The Fighting Scots stand in eighth place in the West, while the Lakers are in fourth place. The Rock stands in fifth with an 8-11 league mark, the Griffins sixth at 8-12 and the Vulcans seventh at 6-13.
  • Redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason helped spark the Boro's comeback against the Golden Knights, scoring 24 second-half points after being held to just two points in the first half. The 6'3" guard scored the game-winning jumper with 14.1 seconds to play.
  • Mason, who ranks second in the PSAC and ninth in Division II with 23.3 ppg., moved passed Billy Wade and Joe Jones into sixth place all-time at Edinboro in career scoring on Wednesday with 1,471 points. He needs 26 points to crack into the top five.
  • Mercyhurst, the defending PSAC champions, has won three of its last four contests, including an 85-80 win over Seton Hill on Wednesday, to move one step closer to a PSAC Tournament berth. The Lakers, who returned just one starter from last season, posted a school-record 22 wins in 2016 and advanced as far as the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

  • Jaymon Mason tallied 32 points for his third straight 30-point game. Maceo Baston, in his first career start at Edinboro, had 13 points, while Jon Girvin registered nine points with eight rebounds.
  • Edinboro trailed Mercyhurst at the half by just four points at 34-30. But the Lakers used a 60.7 field goal percentage (17-for-28) to pull away in the second half. After a Jaymon Mason three cut Mercyhurst's lead to 54-45 with 10:46 left, the Lakers responded with a 14-2 run for their largest lead of the game at 68-47 with 5:37 remaining.
  • The Fighting Scots were forced into 16 turnovers, which led to 16 Mercyhurst points off turnovers. The Lakers held a 37-28 lead in rebounds and a 24-3 lead in bench points.
  • Lorenzo Collier led the Lakers with 30 points, while Dajuan Dent tallied 22 points with eight rebounds. Durrell McDonald finished with 16 points and five boards.
 
Last Time Out
2/15/17 – Edinboro 78, Gannon 77 at Gannon University BOX | RECAP
  • Edinboro trailed, 42-26, at halftime and faced its largest deficit of the game at 44-26 when Gannon's Evan Phoenix knocked down a jumper with 19:41 to play.
  • The Fighting Scots rallied and eventually tied the game at 72-72 with 2:49 to play. Gannon's Matthew Dogan scored the next five points for a 77-72 lead, but the Fighting Scots answered with the last six points of the night.
  • Jaymon Mason's long jumper with 14.1 seconds to play provided the winning score. Phoenix went to the free throw line with 1.9 seconds remaining, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. Andre Frederick grabbed the rebound for Edinboro to secure the win.
  • Mason, who scored just two points in the first half, erupted for 24 second-half points to help lead the comeback charge. The 6'3" guard also finished with seven assists, five rebounds and five steals. Sheldon Brogdon had 15 points with five rebounds, while Frederick had 11 points and four boards in 15 minutes off the bench.
  • Despite playing with only seven players, the Fighting Scots outscored the Golden Knights, 18-0, in bench points. Edinboro forced Gannon into 14 turnovers for 20 points, while they turned the ball over just six times and only once in the second half.
 
2/15/17 – Mercyhurst 85, Seton Hill 80 at Mercyhurst University BOX | RECAP
  • While both sides utilized a combined 13 players off the bench, Mercyhurst dominated Seton Hill, 44-4, in bench points. The Lakers used seven players off the bench, while the Griffins used six.
  • Lorenzo Collier made 7-of-10 3-pointers to pace the Lakers with 28 points in 25 minutes off the pine, while tallying six rebounds. Durrell McDonald turned in 24 points with a team-high eight rebounds.  
  • The Lakers led, 39-34, at halftime and led the entire second half, extending their lead to as much as 11 points in the closing session.
 
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary, Edinboro '99 (46-56, 4th Year)
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's teams have improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • He made the playoffs for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
 
Mercyhurst: Gary Manchel, Vermont '85 (234-157, 14th Year; Career: 365-282, 23rd Year)
  • Gary Manchel is the winningest coach in Mercyhurst history with 230 wins. He led the Lakers to their first PSAC Championship in 2016 and made their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. His teams have made the league tournament in 13 out of his 14 years (GLIAC and PSAC combined). The Vermont alum was named PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2016.
  • Manchel spent nine years as head coach at UMass Lowell from 1992-2001. He was named NE-10 Coach of the Year in 2001 after leading the River Hawks to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Before joining Mercyhurst, he served two years as an assistant coach at Ohio. Manchel was also an assistant coach at Yale and served as a graduate assistant coach at Slippery Rock.

Jaymon Mason (G, R-Jr.)
  • Scored 24 second-half points at Gannon on Wednesday, including the game-winning jumper with 20 seconds left, after being held to just two points in the first half. His 26 points Wednesday night marked his 13th 20-point game of the season.
  • Scored a career-high 40 points at Pitt-Johnstown on February 4, becoming the first Fighting Scot to score 40 points in a game since Blake Johnson in 2001.
  • Has nine 30-point games this season and 13 for his career.
  • Recorded three straight 30-point games for the first time in his career between January 18-25.
  • Ranks second in the PSAC and ninth in NCAA Division II in scoring at 23.3 ppg.  Also fourth in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage at 41.3 percent (66-for-160), fifth in assists (5.4) and in and sixth in the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (2.9)
  • Has played all 40 minutes in the last 12 games and has played at least 38 minutes in 16 of the last 17 contests.
  • Was named to the Division II Bulletin All-American preseason team after earning All-American honorable mention accolades last season. The 2015 PSAC West Freshman of the Year was selected to the PSAC West preseason team after being named to the NABC first team and All-PSAC West first team in 2015-16.

  • Has started the last six games, the first starts of his Edinboro career. Has averaged 14.8 ppg. in that span after scoring in double figures once in the first 17 contests.
 
News and Notes
  • Edinboro has suited up just seven players due to injuries in five of the last six games. While Mikael Anderson's return from injury last Saturday brought Pat Cleary's roster up to eight healthy players, Chibunna Ukandu missed Wednesday's contest due to illness.
  • After shooting 50 percent-or-better just twice in the first 19 games, the Fighting Scots have topped that mark three times in the last four outings. The Fighting Scots shot an even 50.0 percent from the floor at Gannon, and had a season-best 54.2 percent recently against Pitt-Johnstown. 
  • Redshirt senior guard Sheldon Brogdon has started the last 15 games, the first starts of his career. He has scored in double figures in the last three games and 12 of the last 16. The 6'0" guard posted back-to-back 15-point performances against IUP and Gannon after netting 21 points against Seton Hill on February 8. He ranks third on the team in scoring at 11.5 ppg., with a career-high 31 points off the bench against Daemen on November 23 and 30 points in his first career start against Cheyney on December 10.
  • Junior center Andre Frederick delivered 11 points with four rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench against the Golden Knights, marking his fifth game in double figures this season. The 6'8" center recorded a double-double at Shippensburg on November 20 with 12 points and 10 boards.
  • Junior guard/forward Mike Beck is averaging 8.2 ppg. over the last 12 contests after scoring in double figures once in the first 11 games. He tallied his fifth game in double digits with 10 points against Seton Hill on February 8.
  • Redshirt junior forward Jon Girvin has started the last 11 games, filling in for an injured Jack Frank. The 6'5" forward, who also plays on the football team, joined the team in early December after starting all 11 games at defensive end in 2016. He is second on the team among active players with 5.2 rpg. and has posted a career-high 11 rebounds in two games.

Scouting Mercyhurst
  • Mercyhurst has won three of the last four games, including an 85-80 win over Seton Hill on Wednesday to move into fourth place in the PSAC West standings. Following Saturday's game, the Lakers close out their regular season against California (Pa.) and Gannon.
  • Mercyhurst looks to return to the PSAC Tournament after winning the league crown in 2016. The Lakers set a school record with 22 wins last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Despite returning just one starter in senior guard H'ian Hale from last year's championship squad, head coach Gary Manchel has benefited from several new additions and transfers.
  • Senior guard Durrell McDonald, a former transfer from DePaul, leads Mercyhurst with 15.0 ppg. and 4.5 rpg. after redshirting in 2015-16. McDonald has started the last six games after coming off the bench in the previous four contests.
  • Junior guard Lorenzo Collier, a transfer from Mott Community College, is second on the team with 11.4 ppg. He scored a team-high 28 points in 25 minutes off the bench against Seton Hill on Wednesday and netted a career-high 30 points in the last meeting against Edinboro. Malcolm Walters is a transfer from Akron and averages 9.5 ppg.
  • Mercyhurst is second in the PSAC in scoring defense at 67.3, trailing only Slippery Rock, who has allowed 63.0 ppg. The Lakers rank seventh in the conference with 7.6 steals per game, with H'ian Hale topping the PSAC and ranking 12th nationally with 2.4 steals per game.
