The Game Story
  • Edinboro (7-17, 5-15 PSAC West) begins a two-game homestand to close out the season on Wednesday when they host rival Slippery Rock (13-13, 9-11 PSAC West) at 7:30 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
  • Edinboro looks for its first season sweep of Slippery Rock since 2007-08. The Fighting Scots defeated The Rock, 70-59, on January 21, ending an eight-game losing streak to SRU at Morrow Field House. Four of the last six meetings have been determined by six points or less.
  • The Fighting Scots were eliminated from the PSAC Tournament picture with Saturday's 81-71 defeat at Mercyhurst. Head coach Pat Cleary's team had remained in the playoff picture despite suiting up as few as seven players recently due to injuries.
  • The Rock clinched a tournament spot on Saturday with a 71-67 win over Gannon. The win ended a three-game losing streak for SRU, who have lost nine of their last 13 games after starting the year at 9-4.
  • Redshirt junior guard Jaymon Mason currently sits sixth all-time at Edinboro in career scoring with 1,485 points. He needs 12 points to pass Don Lovett for fifth all-time. Mason ranks third in the conference and 12th in NCAA Division II this season with 23.0 ppg.
  • Junior guard/forward Maceo Baston and redshirt junior forward Jon Girvin have been welcome additions to Edinboro this year. Baston, a transfer from Southwestern Community College, has started the last seven games, scoring in double digits in five of them, with two 20-point games. Girvin, a football player who joined the team in early December, has started the last 13 games and is Edinboro's leading rebounder at 5.7 rpg. The 6'5" forward had a career-high 13 rebounds at Mercyhurst on Saturday.

1/21/17 – Edinboro 70, Slippery Rock 59 at SRU BOX | RECAP
  • Edinboro held Slippery Rock to 38.7 percent shooting (24-for-62) and 4-for-17 from 3-point range. The Rock shot 7-for-19 from the free throw line, while the Fighting Scots made 16-of-20, highlighted by Jaymon Mason's 12-for-13 performance from the line.
  • The Fighting Scots led, 52-40, with 14:56 to play before The Rock closed the gap to four at 57-53 with 7:51 remaining. Edinboro held SRU to two field goals the rest of the way as The Rock shot 2-for-8 and committed three turnovers in the last seven minutes. 
  • Mason finished with 30 points and nine rebounds for his second consecutive 30-point game. It marked his seventh of the season. Sheldon Brogdon and Mikael Anderson had 13 points and 10 points, respectively. Mike Beck netted nine points, while Jon Girvin grabbed eight boards.
  • Christal Malalu had a double-double with 13 points and 19 rebounds. Vinny Lasley totaled 16 points with six boards, while Merdic Green tallied 11 markers.

2/18/17 – Mercyhurst 81, Edinboro 71 at Mercyhurst University BOX | RECAP
  • Edinboro played Mercyhurst to a closely-contested first half, with the Lakers holding a 36-34 halftime lead. Neither side led by more than five points in the first half.
  • Mercyhurst opened the second half on a 12-1 run, triggered by two quick 3-pointers in the first minute, for a 48-35 lead with 17:45 lead. The Fighting Scots trimmed the Lakers' lead to nine twice, but got no closer.
  • The Fighting Scots played with just seven players for the sixth time in the last seven games, with Chibunna Ukandu missing his second straight game due to illness.
  • Edinboro turned the ball over 10 times in the second half, which Mercyhurst converted into 14 points. The Fighting Scots were held to 10-of-22 shooting in the second half, while the Lakers shot 14-of-35.
  • Sheldon Brogdon led Edinboro with 17 points, while Jon Girvin led both sides with a career-high 13 rebounds. Maceo Baston had 16 points, with Jaymon Mason scoring 14 points and Mike Beck collecting 10 markers.
 
1/19/17 – Slippery Rock 71, Gannon 67 at SRU BOX | RECAP
  • The win clinched Slippery Rock a PSAC Tournament berth, while Kevin Reynolds earned his 100th career win at home.
  • Gannon shot better than 70 percent for most of the first half and led, 27-17, with 5:43 to play. The Rock answered with a 14-5 run to get back in the contest and trailed just 35-33 at halftime. Tied at 65-65 tie with 1:15 to play, The Rock converted on six free throws down the stretch for the win.
  • Slippery Rock shot a season-best 16-for-17 from the free throw line, while the Golden Knights made 8-of-11. The Rock forced Gannon into 16 turnovers for a 21-9 lead in points off turnovers.
 
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary, Edinboro '99 (46-57, 4th Year)
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's teams have improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • He made the playoffs for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
 
Slippery Rock: Kevin Reynolds, Bloomsburg '91 (166-98, 9th Year)
  • In just his ninth season, Kevin Reynolds ranks second all-time at Slippery Rock in career wins. Reynolds, who earned his 100th career win at home on Saturday, has led The Rock to five 20-win seasons and three NCAA Tournament appearances, as well as a PSAC Finals appearance in 2013.
  • After playing at Bloomsburg, the 2009 PSAC West Coach of the Year got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant at Indiana (Pa.) and was an assistant coach at Edinboro under Greg Walcavich.
  • Reynolds came to Slippery Rock after a one-season stint as assistant coach at Morehead State. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Drake and Denver, serving as the interim head coach at the latter during the 2006-07 season.

Jaymon Mason (G, R-Jr.)
  • Ranks third in the PSAC and 12th in NCAA Division II in scoring at 23.0 ppg.  Also fourth in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage at 40.7 percent (66-for-162), fifth in assists (5.4) and sixth in the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (2.8).
  • Scored 24 second-half points at Gannon last Wednesday, including the game-winning jumper with 20 seconds left, after being held to just two points in the first half. His 26 points marked his 13th 20-point game of the season.
  • Scored a career-high 40 points at Pitt-Johnstown on February 4, becoming the first Fighting Scot to score 40 points in a game since Blake Johnson in 2001.
  • Has nine 30-point games this season and 13 for his career.
  • Recorded three straight 30-point games for the first time in his career between January 18-25.
  • Has played all 40 minutes in the last 13 games and has played at least 38 minutes in 17 of the last 18 contests.
  • Was named to the Division II Bulletin All-American preseason team after earning All-American honorable mention accolades last season. The 2015 PSAC West Freshman of the Year was selected to the PSAC West preseason team after being named to the NABC first team and All-PSAC West first team in 2015-16.
Mikael Anderson (F, Sr.)
  • Has played the last three games off the bench after missing the previous four games with an injury. Played in just the second half at Mercyhurst, registering seven points, four rebounds and four assists in 12 minutes.
  • Has five 20-point games this season, including a career-high 29 points at Indiana (Pa.) on January 14.
  • Second on the team in rebounding (5.7 rpg.) and second in scoring (13.6 ppg.) in his first year as a starter.
  • Recorded his first career double-double against West Chester on December 4 with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Sheldon Brogdon (G, R-Sr.)
  • Has started the last 16 games, the first starts of his career. Has scored in double figures in the last four games and 13 of the last 17.
  • Tallied a team-high 17 points on Saturday against the Lakers.
  • Ranks third on the team in scoring at 11.9 ppg., with a career-high 31 points off the bench against Daemen on November 23 and 30 points in his first career start against Cheyney on December 10.
Jon Girvin (F, R-Jr.)
  • Has started the last 13 games in place of Jack Frank. Grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds on Saturday at Mercyhurst.
  • Joined the team in early December after starting all 11 games at defensive end for the football team in 2016.
  • Leads the team in rebounding at 5.7 rpg. Collected a pair of 11-rebound games against Cheyney on December 10 and against Seton Hill on February 8.
 
News and Notes
  • Edinboro was eliminated from playoff contention with Saturday's 81-71 defeat at Mercyhurst. The Fighting Scots remained competitive this far into the season despite injuries and illness causing them to play with seven players in six of the last seven games. A testament to Edinboro's resiliency shined last Wednesday at Gannon, when they battled from 18 points down in the second half for a 78-77 win.
  • In regards to the injuries, the Fighting Scots have been without players for a combined 47 games. senior guard Malachy Onwudiegwu, who worked his way into the starting lineup in early December, has missed the last 16 games. Junior center Jack Frank, after starting the first 11 games, has missed the last 13 games. Sophomore guard Mike Sims Jr. became a solid performer off the bench before an injury last month has benched him the last 10 games. Lastly, the Fighting Scots have been without redshirt senior guard Chibunna Ukandu the last two contests due to illness. Mikael Anderson has played the last three games after missing the previous four due to an injury.
  • After shooting 50 percent-or-better just twice in the first 19 games, the Fighting Scots have topped that mark three times in the last five outings. The Fighting Scots shot an even 50.0 percent from the floor at Gannon last Wednesday, and had a season-best 54.2 percent at Pitt-Johnstown on February 4.  
  • Junior guard/forward Maceo Baston has started the last seven games, averaging 15.0 ppg. in that span with five games in double digits. The 6'5" transfer from Southwestern Community College posted a pair of 20-point games, including a career-high 24 points against fourth-ranked Indiana (Pa.) on February 11.
  • Junior guard/forward Mike Beck tallied 10 points at Mercyhurst for his sixth game in double digits this season. He had a season-high 17 points against Gannon on January 11, tying his career high with five 3-pointers.
Scouting Slippery Rock
  • Slippery Rock clinched a PSAC Tournament berth on Saturday with a 71-67 win over Gannon. The victory ended a three-game losing streak for the Rock, who have lost nine of their last 13 games after starting the year at 9-4. This included a 70-59 home loss to Edinboro on January 21.
  • Head coach Kevin Reynolds has led SRU to the playoffs after returning only two players from last year: Jordan Marrow and Naquil Jones. Of the nine new players, eight are transfers, including five from Marshalltown Community College.
  • The Rock showcase a strong defensive unit. They lead the PSAC and rank fifth in NCAA Division II in scoring defense at 63.2 ppg. In addition, they lead the conference and rank seventh nationally in rebounding with a 9.5 rebounding margin. However, on the flip side of that, SRU is last in the PSAC in scoring at 64.1 ppg.
  • Senior guard Naquil Jones is SRU's leading scorer at 13.9 ppg. He was held to just three points against the Fighting Scots in the last meeting.
  • Junior forward Merdic Green and senior guard Khyree Wooten are the only two players to start all 18 games for The Rock this year, averaging 11.5 ppg. and 8.9 ppg., respectively. Green is a transfer from Marshalltown Community College, while Wooten came to SRU from Colby Community College.
  • Senior forward Christal Malalu, a transfer from Marshalltown Community College, leads the team and ranks 11th in the PSAC in rebounding at 6.8 rpg., while averaging 7.6 ppg. Malalu had 19 rebounds, along with 13 points, against Edinboro in the previous meeting.
  • Senior guard Jordan Marrow is the brother of former Edinboro basketball player and student assistant coach Will Marrow. Will Marrow played for the Fighting Scots from 2012-15 and served as a student assistant coach during the 2015-16 season.

He reached the milestone in 55 games, which is fourth-fastest at Edinboro. Only Adam Cheek (49 games) Tyrone Mason (51 games), Jaymon's father, and Kenny Tate (51 games) have reached the mark faster.
