Edinboro Routs Auburn in Second Game Friday to Finish Seventh at NWBA Intercollegiate Championships

WHITEWATER, Wisc. (March 10, 2017) – The Edinboro University wheelchair basketball team split a pair of games on Friday to finish in seventh place at the NWBA Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by Wisconsin-Whitewater. The sixth-seeded Fighting Scots fell to seventh-seeded Southwest Minnesota State in their first game of the day, 60-47, and routed eighth-seeded Auburn in the seventh-place game by a 52-34 score.
 
Head coach Jim Glatch's squad concluded their season at 14-14 and posted a 1-2 mark at the national championships. Edinboro challenged third-seeded Illinois to an overtime affair in the first round on Thursday, but came up just short by way of a 54-45 decision. It marked the second straight year the Fighting Scots took home a seventh-place finish at the national championships. It was also the second straight year Edinboro defeated Auburn in the seventh-place game.
 
SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE 60, EDINBORO 47
 
While Edinboro allowed just three Southwest Minnesota State players to score, Walter Johnson scored 40 points for the Mustangs, shooting 15-for-21 from the floor, and pulled down 15 rebounds. David Evjen added a triple-double with 16 points, 13 boards and 10 assists. Mike Adams led Edinboro with 19 points. Chayse Wolf finished with 12 points, while Ayuba Alli added eight points with six assists and tied for the team lead with Kevin Atherley grabbing six rebounds.
 
The Mustangs shot 49.0 percent for the game (24-for-49), while the Fighting Scots connected on 35.7 percent from the floor (20-for-56). Southwest Minnesota State held a 38-12 lead in points in the paint and outrebounded Edinboro, 35-23.
 
Edinboro held a 15-12 lead with 8:58 to play in the first half before Southwest Minnesota State jumped on a 15-2 run to lead, 27-17, with 4:25 to go before halftime. Trailing, 31-21, the Fighting Scots closed the first half with five straight points to close the gap at 31-26 at intermission. Edinboro cut Southwest Minnesota State's lead to three twice to begin the second half, both on Wolf jumpers. That would be as close as they would come, however, as the Mustangs would bump their lead to double digits on five different occasions.
 
EDINBORO 52, AUBURN 34
 
Edinboro shot 49.1 percent for the game (26-for-53) and held Auburn to 39.5 percent from the floor (15-for-38). The Fighting Scots held a 26-12 lead in points in the paint and forced the Tigers into 17 turnovers for a 16-6 lead in points off turnovers. Chayse Wolf scored a career-high 26 points, making 13-of-18 shots from the floor, and collected seven rebounds. Kevin Atherley scored eight points with a game-high nine rebounds, while Mike Adams registered four points with 10 assists.
 
The Fighting Scots led for the entire game, and built their lead as much as 18 points in the first half before taking a 32-16 advantage into halftime. Wolf scored 18 of his points in the first half. Edinboro continued its onslaught in the second half, shooting 47.6 percent (10-for-21) and building its lead to as many as 24 points. The Fighting Scots defense, backed by Will Speed, maintained its aggressiveness, holding Auburn to 38.1 percent shooting (8-for-21) in the second half. Auburn got no closer than 14 points of the Fighting Scots' lead.
 
Hunter Alvis scored a team-high 14 points for Auburn, while Ranley Clayton tallied eight points with seven rebounds. Blake Loftin was forced into eight turnovers by the Fighting Scots as he finished with six points, five rebounds and nine assists.
