Emily Peters Scores Five Goals in 10-8 Defeat at Catawba

(March 17, 2017) – The Edinboro University women's lacrosse team closed out their three-match spring break trip on Friday afternoon with a road contest at Catawba. The Fighting Scots held a 6-5 lead in the second half, but five straight goals from the Indians proved to be the deciding factor in Edinboro's 10-8 defeat. Edinboro fell to 1-3, as Catawba improved to 7-2.
 
Emily Peters tallied a match-high five goals, scoring all four of Edinboro's second-half goals. The senior midfielder moved into sixth all-time in the school record books with 121 career points with 99 goals and 22 assists. Olivia Potts finished with three points on one goal and two assists, while Stephanie Chido and Elysia Garland recorded one goal apiece. Sidney Dobbins had a match-high three assists.
 
The Indians converted on 5-of-10 free position chances, while the Fighting Scots scored on 1-of-9 free position opportunities. Edinboro outshot Catawba by a 29-25 margin and were 17-of-22 on clear opportunities, compared to 17-of-24 by the Indians. The Boro caused 11 turnovers and collected 25 ground balls, with Rachel Olson raking in a match-high six ground balls and five draw controls.
 
Catawba jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, with Nicolette Salay scoring a goal 27 seconds into the match, assisted by Kirstyn Kruse, and Kruse collecting a goal of her own with 27:47 left in the first half. The Edinboro defense held Catawba scoreless for nearly the next 24 minutes, as the offense scored three consecutive goals to take a 3-2 lead. Peters scored her first goal of the contest, assisted by Olivia Potts, with 20:34 to go before halftime. Chido tied the match with 7:39 to play in the half, while Garland gave Edinboro the lead with 5:51 to play in the half. Catawba's Imani Grays tied the match for the at 3-3 with 3:40 to play, but Potts scored on a free position chance with four seconds to play in the half gave Edinboro a 4-3 lead at intermission.
 
The Indians opened the second half with a free-position goal from Gianna Pezzulo and another score from Kruse to take a 5-4 lead with 24:47 left in the contest. Peters responded for the Boro by scoring the next two goals, both assisted by Dobbins, to put the Fighting Scots back on top, 6-5, with 19:19 to play. The match was scoreless for just over the next five minutes until Catawba reeled off five consecutive goals in a span of nearly 11 minutes for a 10-6 lead with 3:20 remaining. Nicole Hunt and Lexie Stavac combined for three free-position goals in that stretch, while Pezzulo and Kruse accounted for the other two scores. Peters again looked to rally Edinboro with a pair of goals to cut the Indians' lead to two goals, but those would be the last scores of the match.
 
Paige Skinner collected 10 saves and two ground balls on the day as she fell to 1-3. Catawba's Madison Anselmo gathered 12 saves to improve to 7-2 on the year.
 
Kruse led Catawba with four points on three goals and one assist. Hunt had three points on two goals and one assist, while Nicolette Salay added three points on one goal and two assists. Pezzulo finished with a pair of goals.
 
Head coach Caitlin Formato's team will open their PSAC season on Tuesday, March 21 with a home contest against Slippery Rock at 4:00 p.m.
