The Game Story
  • Edinboro plays its final game at McComb Fieldhouse before starting a three-game road trip. The Fighting Scots have played four of their last five games at home, with the other contest at Gannon last Wednesday. Edinboro comes in with a 10-5 overall record and is 7-4 in the PSAC
  • The Fighting Scots have lost three of their last four contests, although that is a bit deceiving. Two of those losses have come in the final seconds to two of the best teams in the PSAC – Kutztown and Indiana(Pa.). On Saturday, IUP hit a game-winning three with 1.8 seconds remaining for a 70-67 win. A week earlier, the Fighting Scots fell 91-89 to Kutztown on a basket with 0.8 seconds to play. That snapped a five-game winning streak.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish eighth out of nine teams in the PSAC West, with Clarion voted ninth. A depleted Golden Eagles' team has lived up to that prediction to date, losing six in a row and 13 of their last 14. Clarion is 3-14 overall and has a 0-11 record in league competition.
  • The Fighting Scots rank ninth in the PSAC in scoring at 78.7 ppg., and has topped 80-or-more points eight times. They rank eighth in scoring defense at 74.0 ppg. Clarion is 13th in scoring offense (74.0 ppg.) and last (18th) in scoring defense (88.1 ppg.).   The Golden Eagles have allowed 90-or-more points in three of the last four games and nine contests overall.  .
  • The Fighting Scots have relied on a trio of players for the majority of the offense. The threesome of Keshawn LigginsAnthony Coleman, and Jaymon Mason combine for 56 points per game. Liggins has led the PSAC in scoring recently before dipping down to 22.5 ppg. That is still good for fourth in the PSAC. He is also third in rebounding at 10.5 rpg.  Coleman and Mason add 16.8 and 16.6 ppg., respectively. The threesome has combined for 30-or-more points nine times.
  • Jaymon Mason has moved up to second in career scoring at Edinboro. The redshirt senior guard now has 1,781 points after scoring 24 points against IUP. He needs 174 points to break the career scoring record o 1,954 points, held by Tyrone Mason, his father.
Edinboro on Radio/Video

All-Time Series vs. Clarion

  • First Meeting: 1928-29 – Edinboro 58, Clarion 27
  • Last Meeting: 2016-17 – Edinboro 85, Clarion 82
  • Current Streak: Edinboro won the last two meetings.
  • Cleary vs. Clarion: 7-2

Last Meeting

Feb. 25, 2017 – Edinboro 85, Clarion 82 at Edinboro, Pa. BOX | RECAP
  • In a fitting end to a season filled with injuries and tough losses, the depleted Edinboro men's basketball team survived three late tying-shot attempts by Clarion to hand the Golden Eagles an 85-82 defeat at McComb Fieldhouse.
  • The Fighting Scots dressed just seven players for the eighth time in the last nine games, and were down to just six players less than ten minutes into the game when Mike Beck re-aggravated an injury and would not return.
  • Two seniors playing in their last game led the Fighting Scots. Sheldon Brogdon led all scorers with 27 points, making 5-of-15 3-pointers while adding seven rebounds. Chibunna Ukandu came off the bench and added 16 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. "Chewy" made 4-of-7 3-pointers.
  • Brogdon stepped up with the big plays in the final moments. Trailing 80-79 with 1:15 to play, Brogdon hit a twisting jumper in the lane off glass to give the Fighting Scots an 81-80 lead with 57 seconds remaining. Moments later, he came up with a steal and raced down the floor for a layup and an 83-80 lead with 35 seconds to play.
  • Clarion would pull to within a point on a pair of free throws by BJ Andrews with 19 seconds left, but four seconds later, Jaymon Mason iced the win with a pair from the charity stripe to make the score 85-82.
  • Edinboro still had to survive a few anxious moments. Cameron Grumley missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds to go. The ball went out of bounds off Edinboro, and Grumley would miss again with three seconds left.  The long rebound came to Andrews, who got another three off before the buzzer, but it was off the mark as time expired.
  • Edinboro finished with five double figure scorers. Mason capped an outstanding season with 19 points, adding eight assists. Andre Frederick added 13 points, seven rebounds, and five blocks. He was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor. Maceo Baston added 10 points and six rebounds.
  • Clarion also had five players in double digits, led by Jamani Pierce with 18 points. Andrews added 17, making 10-of-11 free throws, and Manny Powell came off the bench to contribute 16. Justin Grant scored 14 points and Grumley finished with 11 along with eight assists.
  • Edinboro shot 44.9 percent from the floor (31-of-69) and went 11-for-16 from the line. Clarion was held to just 33.3 percent (11-of-33) in the second half to finish at 40.3 percent for the game (29-of-72). The Golden Eagles were 9-oif-30 on 3-pointers and went 15-of-17 from the line.

Head Coaches

Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 57-63, 5th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • The 9-2 start is the best since Cleary took over as head coach.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. A year ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Clarion: Marcess Williams (LaRoche '02) -- 34-67, 4th year; 193-162, 12th year overall
  • Marcess Williams is in his fourth season as the head coach at Clarion. In his second season in 2015-16, he led Clarion to the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2009-10 and posted a PSAC first round win over Edinboro.
  • Williams inherited a Golden Eagles team that won just 11 games in the two years prior to his arrival. His first-year squad finished 10-16, a five-game improvement over the previous year, and further improved to 14-16 in 2015-16. Last season, Clarion was 7-21.
  • Williams previously served nine years as the head coach at Penn State-Beaver. The Lions won three straight PSUAC Championships (2009-11) and six straight PSAC West titles (2009-14) under Williams. They finished as USCAA Division 2 National runners-up in 2009.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro is off to its best start under fifth-year head coach Pat Cleary at 10-5 overall and 7-4 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots have already bettered last year's win total of eight victories. They opened the season with four straight games at McComb Fieldhouse, then played their next four games on the road. The road trip got off to a less than promising start with losses at Daemen and Mansfield, but the Fighting Scots righted themselves with wins at Lock Haven and Cheyney. They extended the winning streak to five games, the longest since the 2008-09 edition opened the year with eight straight wins, before the recent 91-89 loss to Kutztown. The Kutztown loss came on a basket with 0.8 seconds remaining, and a week later Edinboro again lost in the final seconds as IUP hit a 3-pointer with 1.8 ticks showing for a 70-67 win. The Fighting Scots look to snap a string of three losses in their last four games. It was the second at home this year, as they are 7-2 at McComb Fieldhouse.
  • Edinboro is averaging 78.7 ppg., ranking ninth in the PSAC in scoring offense. The Fighting Scots had topped the 80-point mark in five straight games before being held to 69 points by Gannon, the top defensive team in the PSAC. Last Saturday, they were held to 67 by IUP, another of the conference's top defensive units. Edinboro ranks eighth in the PSAC in scoring defense at 74.0 ppg.
  • Keshawn LigginsAnthony Coleman, and Jaymon Mason are combining for 56 points per game. Each is capable of putting up big numbers. One of them has scored 30-or-more points in nine games, with Liggins reaching the mark in three straight games prior to the Kutztown game, and five overall. He dropped in a career-high 39 points vs. Seton Hill. Coleman posted a season-best 32-point effort at Gannon last Wednesday, and had 30 points in the upset of then eighth-ranked Shippensburg. When Coleman led Edinboro with 19 points at Lock Haven, it marked the only time Edinboro has not had a scorer reach 20 points.  Mason has now had 15 career 30-point games after scoring a season-high 33 points against Kutztown, his second 30-point effort of the year. He had 32 points vs. Daemen.
  • Second all-time leading scorer and preseason All-American Jaymon Mason battled an early-season injury but is now healthy and playing up to his normal standards. The senior guard had a season-high 33-point effort against Kutztown, making 13-of-15 free throws. He had 32 points at Daemen, dropping in 6-of-12 3-pointers while going 10-of-11 at the charity stripe.  Mason comes off a 24-point effort vs. IUP, going 12-of-15 at the line. He is averaging 16.6 ppg., has 51 assists (second on the team), and has made 39-of-105 3-pointers. The senior guard moved into second place in career scoring against Pitt-Johnstown and now has 1,781 career points.
  • Keshawn Liggins has been named to Bevo Francis Award Watch List. He made the cut of the top 100 small college players. He had his ninth double-double against IUP and has pulled down 10-or-more rebounds in ten contests. The 6'5" senior finished with 18 points and matched a season high with 15 rebounds on Saturday. He ranks fourth in the PSAC in scoring (22.5 ppg.) and third in rebounding (10.5 rpg.). He had a streak of three straight games of 30-or-more points end against Kutztown, as he "settled" for 26 points, adding 11 rebounds and seven assists. Liggins had a career-high 39 points vs. Seton Hill and 38 against Charleston. He is a transfer from Idaho State and has been an ironman, ranking fifth in the country in minutes per game (38.3). His nine double-doubles ranks third in the PSAC and 13th in Division II.
  • Anthony Coleman showed last Wednesday just how much of a threat he is to put up big numbers. A transfer from Cincinnati State CC, the 6'3" guard burned Gannon for 32 points, making 7-of-12 3-pointers. He has had five games of 20-or-more points, including the 32 vs. Gannon and 30 points in an upset of Shippensburg. He is the top 3-point threat on the team, making 46-of-100 3-pointers. He ranks third in the PSAC in 3-point percentage (.460) and is tied for second in 3-pointers made per game (3.1).
  • The Fighting Scots posted the biggest win in Cleary's four-plus seasons as head coach, an 88-86 triumph over eighth-ranked Shippensburg, earlier this year. Edinboro had previously upset 16th-ranked Indiana(Pa.), 79-77 in overtime, in 2014-15.
  • Offensive lineman Trey Staunch, a former standout in football and basketball at West Middlesex High School, continues to play a key role for the Fighting Scots. He saw his first action against Shippensburg and in 12 games is playing just under 14 minutes per game, averaging 54 ppg. amd 2.3 rpg. A two-year starter at right tackle, the 6'4", 265 lb. junior joined the basketball team at the conclusion of the football season.
  • The combination of Jack Frank  and Staunch is providing the Fighting Scots with plenty of production in the post. Frank, a 6'8" junior, is Edinboro's second-leading rebounder at 7.0 per game. He pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds vs. California(Pa.) and added 10 more against Seton Hill.
  • Mike Beck scored 19 points in the win over Millersville, and comes in averaging 5.7 ppg. with 18 3-pointers in 54 attempts. The senior swingman's biggest contributions have come on defense, as he has been assigned some of the top scorers in the PSAC.
  • The freshman tandem of Alex Jay and Jaryn Simpson possesses some impressive genes and have provided the Fighting Scots with valuable minutes. Jay is the son of Sarah (Bishop) Jay, who ranks fourth in career scoring for the Edinboro women's basketball team, Simpson's father Bronze, is one of the all-time leading scorers and rebounders at Gannon. Jay, a 6'3" guard, is averaging 4.2 ppg. in 14.3 minutes per game and has made 13-of-33 3-pointers. Simpson, a 6'1" guard, is playing 14.4 minutes per game and averaging 3.8 ppg. with 32 assists.

Scouting the Golden Eagles

  • Clarion comes into Wednesday's game with a 3-14 record and is 0-11 in PSAC action. The Golden Eagles have lost six straight games and 13 of their last 14. The lone win was an 84-53 victory over Penn State DuBois. Clarion is 0-8 on the road, along with a 1-0 record in neutral contests. The Golden Eagles were picked to finish ninth in the PSAC West.
  • Head coach Marcess Williams is in his fourth season at Clarion. A year ago, the Golden Eagles finished with a 7-21 record. Williams has a 34-67 record at Clarion.
  • Clarion is 13th in the PSAC in scoring offense (74.0 ppg.) and last (18th) in scoring defense (88.1 ppg.).   The Golden Eagles have allowed 90-or-more points in three of the last four games and nine contests overall. In addition, they have struggled on the glass, ranking 17th in the PSAC in rebounding margin (-7.1).
  • The Golden Eagles have been forced to play with a depleted roster in the last six games. They have not played more than seven players in any of those contests.
  • Senior guard Cameron Grumley leads the Golden Eagles. He has scored in double figures in 13 straight games, and on Saturday against Gannon he became the 30th Clarion player to score 1,000 points for his career. He now has 1,009 career points. Grumley averages 16.6 ppg. and has made 30-of-83 3-pointers. He also leads the team in assists (47) and steals (28), and even averages 5.5 rpg. A year ago, Grumley led NCAA Division II in free throw percentage at 95.3 pct. He currently ranks fourth in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 91.2 pct. (52-of-57).
  • Kyheim Hall actually has the highest scoring average on the team at 19.4 ppg., but the senior forward has played in the last 10 games. He is also the team's leading rebounder (6.3 rpg.).
