Last Meeting
Feb. 15, 2017 – Edinboro 78, Gannon 77 at Erie, Pa. BOX | RECAP
  • Facing an 18-point, second-half deficit, the Fighting Scots posted a furious comeback, culminating in a game-winning jumper by Jaymon Mason, with 20 seconds remaining, to stun the Golden Knights, 78-77.
  • Edinboro, who played with just seven players due to injuries for the fifth time in the last six games, scored the last six points of the contest and even survived a late scare with one second to play when Gannon's Evan Phoenix failed to convert on the front end of a one-and-one.
  • Edinboro trailed Gannon, 42-26, at halftime, and faced its largest deficit of the contest at 44-26 when Phoenix opened the second half with a jumper with 19:41 to play. Mason, after being held to just two points in the first half and not making a basket until 1:12 left in the opening period, exploded for 24 second-half points to help lead the charge for Edinboro. The Fighting Scots' efforts, which saw them shoot 57.6 percent in the second half and 7-for-12 from 3-point range, eventually tied the game at 72-72 with 2:49 to go.
  • Gannon ran off the next five points to retake the lead, 77-72, with 1:47 remaining. Andre Frederick and Sheldon Brogdon each scored on layups to draw Edinboro to within one at 77-76 with 49 seconds remaining. After a missed layup by Dogan with 40 ticks left, Mason drilled the long jumper with 20 seconds to play to take a 78-77 lead. Following a Gannon timeout, Phoenix was fouled with one second to play, giving him a one-and-one opportunity. But the front end of Phoenix' chance hit high off the back rim, with Frederick coming up with the rebound to seal the incredible win.

The road trip got off to a less than promising start with losses at Daemen and Mansfield, but the Fighting Scots righted themselves with wins at Lock Haven and Cheyney. They extended the winning streak to five games, the longest since the 2008-09 edition opened the year with eight straight wins, before Saturday's 91-89 loss to Kutztown. • Keshawn LigginsAnthony Coleman, and Jaymon Mason are combining for over 56 points per game. Each is capable of putting up big numbers. One of them has scored 30-or-more points in eight games, with Liggins reaching the mark in three straight games prior to the Kutztown game, and five overall. He dropped in a career-high 39 points vs. Seton Hill. Coleman scored 30 points in the upset of then eighth-ranked Shippensburg. When Coleman led Edinboro with 19 points at Lock Haven, it marked the only time Edinboro has not had a scorer reach 20 points.  Mason has now had 15 career 30-point games after scoring a season-high 33 points against Kutztown.
  • Second all-time leading scorer and preseason All-American Jaymon Mason battled an early-season injury but is now healthy and playing up to his normal standards. The senior guard had a season-high 33-point effort against Kutztown, making 13-of-15 free throws, and is averaging 21.5 ppg. over his last four outings. Mason had 32 points at Daemen, dropping in 6-of-12 3-pointers while going 10-of-11 at the charity stripe.  Mason added 27 points at Cheyney, making 6-of-9 3-pointers. He has boosted his average to 16.6 ppg. The senior guard scored 17 points against Pitt-Johnstown to move into second place in career scoring with 1,748 career points, moving past Walt Askins. His eight double-doubles ranks third in the PSAC and 12th in Division II.
  • Anthony Coleman is another threat to put up big numbers. A transfer from Cincinnati State CC, the 6'3" guard is averaging 15.9 ppg., and has had four games of 20-or-more points, including a career-high 30 points in an upset of Shippensburg. • For the second year in a row, the football team is providing a boost to the basketball team. He has proven a huge asset, currently playing just under 13 minutes per game and averaging 5.3 ppg. Staunch scored a season high 12 points in the Charleston game.
  • The combination of Jack Frank  and Staunch is providing the Fighting Scots with plenty of production in the post. Frank, a 6'8" junior, is Edinboro's second-leading rebounder at 7.2 per game.
