The Game Story
  • Edinboro wrapped up a three game road swing on Wednesday at Pitt-Johnstown with an 87-72 win in overtime. That boosted the Fighting Scots to 12-7 overall and 9-6 in PSAC action. They now begin a stretch of three home games in the next four contests while looking to nail down a berth in the PSAC Tournament.

  • Picked to finish eighth out of nine teams in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll, Edinboro is currently in fourth place in the Western Division at 9-6. Pitt-Johnstown (8-8) is fifth, with Edinboro owning a season-sweep of the two-game series, and Mercyhurst is at 7-8.  The top six teams in each division qualify for the PSAC Tournament.

The threesome of Keshawn LigginsAnthony Coleman, and Jaymon Mason combine for almost 57 points per game, and against UPJ, they combined for 70 points. Liggins recorded his 12th double-double against Pitt-Johnstown with 29 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Last Meeting

Dec. 30, 2017 – Edinboro 87, California(Pa.) 63 at California, Pa. BOX | RECAP
  • Keshawn Liggins scored 32 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as Edinboro matched last year's win total with its eighth win.  Liggins made 12-of-23 field goals, including 3-of-4 3-pointers, and was 5-for-5 at the line.
  • Edinboro used an early 16-2 run to effectively take control of the contest. The Vulcans led for just 12 seconds and held their lone lead of the game at 3-2, but Edinboro ran off eight points in a row thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Jaymon Mason and Mike Beck, and a Liggins' layup. That gave the Fighting Scots a 10-3 advantage. After a Cal basket Edinboro ran off eight more points, all by Mason, for an 18-5 lead with 13:03 left in the first half.
  • The Vulcans would narrow the deficit to six points on several occasions, the last at 39-33 with 2:32 to play. Edinboro closed out the half with another 8-0 run. Alex Jay started it with a 3-pointer, followed by a pair of Liggins' free throws, and Jay capped it with another trifecta for a 47-33 lead at the half.
  • Cal scored the opening basket of the second half, but that was as close as the game would get. Leading 51-36, Edinboro responded with a 10-2 burst, as Liggins accounted for all 10 points. He scored 12 of Edinboro's first 14 points in the half.
  • Mason enjoyed a big effort with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. He scored 16 points in the first half, and all told made 7-of-11 field goals, including 4-of-7 3-pointers.
  • Anthony Coleman was also in double figures with 11 points. Jack Frank pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds as Edinboro ruled the glass, 53-39. Jay added eight points off the bench, with Trey Staunch finishing with six points.

  • Isaiah Lewis led Cal with 20 points, with Luka Andjusic (14) and Terry Davis Jr. (13) also in double figures.
Head Coaches

Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 59-65, 5th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • The 9-2 start is the best since Cleary took over as head coach.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. A year ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.

California(Pa.): Kent McBride (Concord '06) -- 19-30, 2nd Year; 102-93, 7th year career
  • Kent McBride is in his second year as California (Pa.)'s head coach following a five-year head coaching stint at Concord, where he compiled an 83-63 record. In his first season at Cal, the Vulcans finished with a 10-18 record and finishing seventh in the PSAC West. It was a three-game improvement over 2015-16.
  • McBride led the Mountain Lions to the Mountain East Conference championship and their second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2016. It was Concord's first league title since 1997.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro improved to 12-7 overall and 9-6 in the PSAC West with an 87-72 win in overtime at Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday.  The win wrapped up a stretch of three straight games on the road. Edinboro now plays three of its next four games at home looking to secure a spot in the PSAC Tournament.  The Fighting Scots are currently fourth in the PSAC West. Prior to Wednesday's win at UPJ, the Fighting Scots had lost five of their last seven games, with four of the losses by a combined 12 points.
  • Three of Edinboro's losses have come on buzzer-beaters in the last three weeks. The Kutztown setback came on a basket with 0.8 seconds remaining, as the Golden Bears prevailed 91-89. A week later, Edinboro again lost in the final seconds as IUP hit a 3-pointer with 1.8 ticks showing for a 70-67 win. Last Wednesday, Mercyhurst hit the game-winner with 13.2 seconds to play.
  • The Fighting Scots were impressive in their first overtime game of the season. Edinboro outscored Pitt-Johnstown 15-0, as UPJ went 0-for-9 from the floor and Edinboro made 5-of-6 shots. Jaymon Mason and Anthony Coleman each had six points in overtime.
  • Edinboro is averaging 79.7 ppg., ranking eighth in the PSAC in scoring offense. The Fighting Scots had topped the 80-point mark in five straight games before being held to 69 points by Gannon, the top defensive team in the PSAC. They were then held to 67 by IUP, another of the conference's top defensive units. Mercyhurst came in ranked first in the PSAC and fourth in the country in scoring defense, but Edinboro would put 79 points on the board. The 87 points scored at Pitt-Johnstown marked the ninth time the Fighting Scots have scored 85-or-more points.. Edinboro is also eighth in the PSAC in scoring defense (74.9 ppg.).
  • Keshawn LigginsAnthony Coleman, and Jaymon Mason are combining for almost 57 points per game. The trio contributed 7-0 points at Pitt-Johntown -- Liggins with 29, Mason 25, and Coleman 16. Each is capable of putting up big numbers. One of them has scored 30-or-more points in ten games, with Liggins reaching the mark in six contests. The latest came two weeks ago as he scored 36 points in the 86-73 win over Clarion. He dropped in a career-high 39 points vs. Seton Hill. Coleman posted a season-best 32-point effort at Gannon recently, and had 30 points in the upset of then eighth-ranked Shippensburg. When Coleman led Edinboro with 19 points at Lock Haven, it marked the only time Edinboro has not had a scorer reach 20 points.  Mason has now had 15 career 30-point games after scoring a season-high 33 points against Kutztown, his second 30-point effort of the year. He had 32 points vs. Daemen.
  • Second all-time leading scorer and preseason All-American Jaymon Mason battled an early-season injury but is now healthy and playing up to his normal standards. The senior guard had a season-high 33-point effort against Kutztown, making 13-of-15 free throws. He had 32 points at Daemen, dropping in 6-of-12 3-pointers while going 10-of-11 at the charity stripe.  Mason is averaging 16.4 ppg. after dropping in 25 points vs. Pitt-Johnstown. He is also second on the team with 62 assists, and has made 45-of-124 3-pointers. The senior guard moved into second place in career scoring in the first meeting with Pitt-Johnstown and now has 1,843 career points. He is also fifth in career assists with 377.
  • Keshawn Liggins was named to the Bevo Francis Award Watch List last week, and earlier this week was selected the Division II Bulletin Player of the Month for January. He had his 12th double-double at UPJ with 29 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. He has pulled down 10-or-more rebounds in 13 contests. The 6'5" senior leads the PSAC in scoring (23.6 ppg.) and ranks eighth in Division II, and is third and 13th, respectively, in rebounding (10.9 rpg.). He scored a career-high 39 points vs. Seton Hill and 38 against Charleston. Liggins is a transfer from Idaho State and has been an ironman, ranking fifth in the country in minutes per game (38.3). His 12 double-doubles ranks third in the PSAC and eighth in Division II.
  • Anthony Coleman is a multi-faceted scorer who can burn the opposition from deep, or drive strong to the basket. The transfer from Cincinnati State CC displayed the former vs. Gannon as he burned the Golden Knights for a season-high 32 points, making 7-of-12 3-pointers. The latter was in evidence against Clarion, as the 6'3" guard consistently drove to the hoop, ending the night with 24 points (8-of-12 FGs, 8-of-10 FTs). He added 10 rebounds for his first double-double. Coleman has had six games of 20-or-more points, including 30 points in an upset of Shippensburg. He is the top 3-point threat on the team, making 50-of-120 3-pointers. He ranks seventh in the PSAC in 3-point percentage (41.0 pct.) and is also seventh in 3-pointers made per game (2.6).
  • The Fighting Scots posted the biggest win in Cleary's four-plus seasons as head coach, an 88-86 triumph over eighth-ranked Shippensburg, earlier this year. Edinboro had previously upset 16th-ranked Indiana(Pa.), 79-77 in overtime, in 2014-15.
  • A two-year starter at right tackle on the offensive lineman Trey Staunch is now making a now for himself on the hardwood. A former standout in football and basketball at West Middlesex High School, the 6'4", 265 lb. junior is playing a larger role each game. He scored a season-high 14 points in back-to-back games against Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst, and is now averaging 6.4 ppg. and 2.6 rpg. in just 15.5 minutes per game. He is an excellent free throw shooter, hitting 77.5 percent at the charity stripe. Staunch joined the basketball team at the conclusion of the football season.
  • The combination of Jack Frank  and Staunch is providing the Fighting Scots with plenty of production in the post. Frank, a 6'8" junior, is Edinboro's second-leading rebounder at 6.7 per game. He pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds in the first meeting with California(Pa.) and added 11 vs. Clarion.
  • Mike Beck scored 19 points in the win over Millersville, and had a 13-point effort against Clarion. The 6'4" senior is averaging 5.6 ppg. with 23 3-pointers in 67 attempts. His biggest contributions have come on defense, as he has been assigned some of the top scorers in the PSAC.
  • The freshman tandem of Alex Jay and Jaryn Simpson possesses some impressive genes and have provided the Fighting Scots with valuable minutes. Jay is the son of Sarah (Bishop) Jay, who ranks fourth in career scoring for the Edinboro women's basketball team, Simpson's father Bronze, is one of the all-time leading scorers and rebounders at Gannon. Jay, a 6'3" guard, is averaging 3.6 ppg. in 13.9 minutes per game and has made 15-of-41 3-pointers. Simpson, a 6'1" guard, is averaging 3.8 ppg. with 41 assists in 15.6 minutes per game.
  • Michael Sims Jr. provided a major lift off the bench at UPJ. The junior guard played a season-high 22 minutes, and while scoring just a point, he helped slow down standout point guard Dale Clancy.

Scouting The Vulcans
  • California(Pa.) was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC West after finishing with a 10-18 record a year ago. The Vulcans come in with a 9-12 overall record and are 5-10 in the PSAC. They have lost four of their last five games.
  • The Vulcans enjoyed a bye on Wednesday, and last played a week ago, suffering an 86-65 loss at Slippery Rock.  Jahmere Howze paced the Vulcans with 21 points, making 11-of-14 free throws. It was the junior's eighth 20-point performance of the season.
  • When Cal and Edinboro met for the first time, the Vulcans led the PSAC in scoring at over 88 ppg. That figure has dropped to 81.8 ppg. as they now rank seventh. They still have scored 85-or-more points on 12 occasions. Cal ranks last in the PSAC in scoring defense (86.0 ppg.).
  • Head coach Kent McBride bolstered his roster with three transfers, and the trio rank as the Vulcans' top three scorers. Isaiah Lewis, a 6'3" senior by way of Temple, leads the way at 17.6 ppg., with a team-high 83 assists.   Jahmere Howze was added to the interior after playing a year ago at Urbana. The 6'7", 230 lb. junior averages 16.8 ppg. and a team- leading 7.4 rpg. He is shooting 52.5 percent from the floor, good for sixth in the PSAC. Howze has been to the line 133 times, making 91.  Terry Davis, Jr. adds 16.3 ppg. The 6'3" senior is a transfer from Glenville State. He is second on the team in rebounding (7.0 rpg.) and is shooting 50.0 percent from the floor.
  • Cordell Smith and Robel Teckle provide the Vulcans with a pair of dangerous 3-point threats. Smith has made 51-of-133 and averages 11.2 ppg., while Teckle averages 9.7 ppg., making 43-of-107. The 6'7" forward adds 5.5 rpg.  Teckle has had a couple big games of late with 27 points against Seton Hill (7-of-10 3-pointers) and 24 vs. Clarion (6-of-8 3's).
