Atherley Posts Pair of Double-Doubles as Fighting Scots Lose by Narrow Margins at Cleveland

Box Score (New/Sortable Format) 1 | Box Score (New/Sortable Format) 2 CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Edinboro wheelchair basketball team lost a pair of tight games against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday to fall to 14-15 on the season. They play at the Canadian Academy on Saturday, March 10 before competing in the NIWBT National Championships on March 15-17.

The Fighting Scots lost a heart-breaker in the first game on Sunday, as the back-and-forth cointest ending with the Cavaliers scoring with 25 seconds left for a 37-36 win. In the second game, Edinboro trailed by 12 points in the second half, only to see their rally come up just short, falling 53-50. Kevin Atherley recorded double-doubles in both games.

GAME ONE
Cleveland 37, Edinboro 36

Edinboro jumped out to an early eight point lead, but over the final 34 mintes neither team led by more than five points. The Fighting Scots would hold a 17-16 lead at the half. That would be a common margin, as the lead changed hands nine times over the last five minutes. Edinboro grabbed a 36-35 lead on Alex Saleh's basket with 47 seconds remaining. The Cavaliers would come down and score the winning basket by Will Waller with 25 seconds to play. Edinboro would have three attempts to win in the final eight seconds. But none would fall. Kevin Atherley led the Fighting Scots with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Chayse Wolf added six points and eight boards, while Saleh also had six points. Edinboro shot 32.7 percent from the floor (16-of-49) and made 4-of-11 free throws. Cleveland was 17-of-47 from the floor (36.2 pct.) and was 3-of-6 at the line. Edinboro held a slight 30-26 advantage in rebounds, while committing just nine turnovers compared to 15 for the Cavaliers.

GAME TWO
Cleveland 53, Edinboro 50

After leading 22-21 at the half, Edinboro saw Cleveland go on a 13-2 run early in the second half to go up 36-26 with just under 13 minutes remaining. The Cavaliers would go up by 12 points at 47-35 with 5:28 to play before the Fighting Scots staged a rally that came up just short. Edinboro closed the game on a 15-6 run. They pulled within five at 53-48 with 50 seconds left on Ayuba Alli's 3-pointer, but would not score again until Chayse Wolf's basket at the buzzer. Kevin Atherley had his second double of the day with 22 points and 10 rebounds, making 10-of-14 field goals and 2-of-3 free throws. Alli finished with seven points and seven assists. Will Speed had six points and six rebounds, while Wolf finished with five and seven, respectively. Edinboro shot 37.9 percent from the floor (22-of-58) and made 5-of-9 free throws. Cleveland was 24-of-51 from the floor (47.1 pct.) and was 3-of-7 at the line. Both teams finished with 31 rebounds, with Edinboro committing nine turnoversand the Cavaliers eight.
