The Game Story
  • Picked to finish eighth in the PSAC Coaches' Preseason Poll, Edinboro hosts Pitt-Johnstown in the first round of the PSAC Tournament with the winner moving on to play at top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) on Wednesday, February 28, and the losing putting the gear away for the season. The Fighting Scots are the number four seed while UPJ comes in as the number five seed.
  • The Fighting Scots ended the regular season with a 16-10 record after suffering their second straight loss, 92-84 to Mercyhurst, on Saturday. UPJ ended the regular season at 15-11 and had the luxury of having a bye on Saturday and comes in well-rested. The Mountain Cats have won five of their last six games. Edinboro will be playing its third game in six days.  
  • The two teams ended the year with identical 13-9 records in PSAC action, but Edinboro won the tiebreaker thanks to sweeping the season series with the Mountain Cats. The Fighting Scots won the first meeting, 82-78, at McComb Fieldhouse, then handed the Mountain Cats an 87-72 defeat in overtime on their homecourt.
  • Edinboro's 16 wins mark the most victories during Pat Cleary's five-year reign as head coach. A year ago, an injury-ravaged team ended the year at 8-18 and they entered the 2017-18 campaign picked to finish eighth in the PSAC Coaches' Preseason Poll. Edinboro will be making its third appearance in the last four years in the PSAC Tournament.  
  • Jaymon Mason became Edinboro's all-time leading scorer on Saturday as the redshirt senior guard broke his father Tyrone Mason's record. He now has 1,967 career points, breaking the old mark of 1,954 points. Mason finished the game with 25 points.
  • Edinboro battled back this season after suffering four losses in the final seconds. The most recent was a 72-71 setback to Gannon on February 10. The Golden Knights made three free throws with 0.4 seconds left to claim the win. In addition, on January 6 Kutztown scored the winning 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining for a 91-89 win, and Indiana(Pa.)'s winning three came with 1.8 seconds showing, for a 70-67 victory on January 13. Mercyhurst hit their game-winning 3-pointer with 13.2 seconds remaining in an 80-79 loss on January 24. That broke a 76-76 tie.
  • Edinboro holds a 22-9 lead in the all-time series with Pitt-Johnstown, winning both meetings this season. The Fighting Scots' have won five of the last seven meetings.
  • The Fighting Scots rank seventh in the PSAC in scoring offense (79.9 ppg.) and are ninth in scoring defense (75.5 ppg.). Pitt-Johnstown ranks tenth in the PSAC in scoring at 77.5 ppg. and is sixth in scoring defense (73.8 ppg.). The teams ranks highly in several other categories, as well. Edinboro is second in 3-point field goal percentage (38.1 pct.) and free throw percentage (78.3 pct.), along with third in 3-pointers made per game (9.3). They are also third in turnover margin (+1.58). UPJ is third in free throw percentage (75.6 pct.) and fourth in field goal percentage (48.4 pct.).
  • The Fighting Scots have relied on a trio of players for the majority of the offense. The threesome of Keshawn LigginsAnthony Coleman, and Jaymon Mason combine for over 56 points per game. Liggins leads the PSAC in scoring (23.9 ppg.), good for eighth in Division II, and is third in rebounding in the PSAC at 10.5 rpg., ranking 14th nationally. He was selected the Division II Bulletin Player of the Month for January. In Saturday's loss to Mercyhurst, he had his 15th double-double and seventh game with 30-or-more points. 
  • Jaymon Mason and Anthony Coleman add 16.7 and 15.6 ppg., respectively. The threesome has combined for 30-or-more points 11 times. In addition, the Fighting Scots have had at least one of the three reach 20 points in every game but one.
  • UPJ has its own trip of big-time scorers in Isaac Vescovi, Dale Clancy and Josh Wise. Vescovi is the PSAC's sixth-leading scorer at 21.0 ppg., while Clancy adds 16.7 ppg. and Wise 15.0. Clancy (1,447 points) and Vescovi (1,376) are both 1,000-point scorers.

This Year's Meetings
Jan. 8, 2018 – Edinboro 82, Pitt-Johnstown 78 at Erie, Pa.  BOX | RECAP
  • Keshawn Liggins made three free throws in the final 73 seconds and Mike Beck added another as the Edinboro men's basketball team held off visiting Pitt-Johnstown. Edinboro was playing its third game in six days.
  • Edinboro appeared to take control of the contest early in the second half, building a 14-point lead at 57-43 with 13:25 left in the second half. That came courtesy of a 15-6 run as Liggins scored 10 points.
  • UPJ roared back, scoring the next 13 points in a span of two minutes to close to 57-56. Dale Clancy scored five of those points. Jack Frank halted the run, making one-of-two-free throws, but UPJ grabbed its first lead of the half at 59-58 with 9:16 to play on a layup and free throw by Levi Masua.
  • The game was tight the rest of the way, with neither team leading by more than four points. The final ten minutes featured five ties and six lead changes.
  • Jaymon Mason's drive with just under three minutes to play gave Edinboro a 78-74 lead, but UPJ knotted the score at 78-all at the 2:03 mark on baskets by Isaac Vescovi and Josh Wise. Edinboro came down and missed on its next possession, but Liggins recorded a steal and was fouled. The 6'5" senior made both free throws with 1:13 to play to give the Fighting Scots the lead for good at 80-78.
  • Liggins was fouled and converted the first to give the Scots an 81-78 lead with nine seconds to play. He would miss the second.
  • UPJ had one last shot at tying the game, but Clancy's 3-pointer was off the mark and Mike Beck rebounded the miss. Beck made one-of-two free throws for the final margin.  
  • Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures, led by Liggins' 21 points. He made 8-of-14 field goals, including a three, and was 4-of-5 at the line. Mason added 17 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Anthony Coleman had 12 points.
  • Alex Jay came off the bench to add 11 points and six rebounds. The 6'3" freshman played 21 minutes, as head coach Pat Cleary took full advantage of his bench with the Scots playing their third game in the last six days. Trey Staunch contributed nine points in 15 minutes, while Jaryn Simpson had three assists and three steals.
  • UPJ also had four players in double digits, led by Josh Wise with 19 points, 15 in the second half. Isaac Vescovi and Dale Clancy added 18 and 15 points, respectively, with Clancy contributing five assists. Masua finished with 11 points.
  • Edinboro shot 48.4 percent from the floor (31-of-64), including 9-of-27 3-pointers, and went 11-of-14 at the line. UPJ shot 54.0 percent from the floor (34-of-63), and came in at 60.0 percent (21-of-35) in the second half. The Mountain Cats converted 5-of-16 3-pointers and were 5-of-6 at the line. Edinboro held a slight 33-32 advantage on the glass, with Frank of Edinboro and Olando King Jr. of UPJ clutching eight apiece. Edinboro turned the ball over 11 times and UPJ 13.

  • Anthony Coleman and Jaymon Mason scored six points apiece as Edinboro outscored Pitt-Johnstown 15-0 in overtime for an 87-72 win at the UPJ Sports Center
  • Regulation featured 17 ties and 19 lead changes. Edinboro took its largest lead of regulation at 60-53 with just over eight minutes remaining. UPJ would go on an 11-2 run to retake the lead at 64-62, but Coleman would knot the contest at 64-all with a pair of free throws with 4:45 remaining.
  • The rest of regulation featured the Mountain Cats taking a two-point lead and Edinboro tying the game. Keshawn Liggins tied the game at 70-70 on a drive with 41 seconds left. Edinboro got a stop on defense and Mason made two free throws with eight seconds left for a 72-70 lead.
  • In a scene seen all too often by head coach Pat Cleary in recent games, Dale Clancy hit a jumper in the paint with 0.2 seconds showing. Fortunately, that basket only tied the game.
  • That would be Pitt-Johnstown's last basket. The Mountain Cats went 0-for-9 from the floor in the overtime period. The first miss led to a scramble for the rebound at the top of the key. Coleman corralled the ball and went in uncontested for a layup and a 74-72 lead.
  • That basket jumpstarted the Fighting Scots. Mason's 3-pointer made it 77-72, and Coleman would boost the lead to seven on a drive. Liggins' drive to the hoop made it 81-72, and Michael Sims Jr. made one of two free throws with 1:32 to play for a 10-point lead at 82-72. Coleman hit two more free throws and Mason wrapped up the win with a long three from the right wing.
  • Edinboro's Big 3 accounted for 70 points. Liggins scored 29 points and added a career-high 16 rebounds. He made 12-of-18 field goals, including a 3-pointer, and was 4-of-5 at the line while playing all 45 minutes.
  • Mason was held to just four points in the first half, but scored 21 points in the second half and overtime to finish with 25 points. He made 9-of-16 field goals, including two 3's, and was 5-for-5 at the line, adding five rebounds.
  • Coleman also enjoyed a big second half, accounting for 14 of his 16 points. He was 6-of-12 from the floor, 4-of-4 at the line, and had five rebounds. Trey Staunch contributed eight points and four rebounds off the bench, while Sims played a season-high 22 minutes and helped slow Clancy down.
  • Clancy led UPJ with 24 points, but Edinboro limited Isaac Vescovi, the sixth-leading scorer in the PSAC, to just eight points. Josh Wise added 17 points and Levi Masua 13 and nine rebounds.
  • Edinboro shot 50.8 percent for the game (33-of-65), including 5-of-16 3-pointers, and went 16-of-19 at the line. UPJ ended at 35.5 percent (27-of-76), going 8-for-27 from beyond the arc, and was 10-of-13 at the line.  Edinboro held a 44-37 rebounding lead.

Head Coaches


Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 63-68, 5th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary has now led the Fighting Scots to the PSAC Tournament in three of the last four years. 
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. A year ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.

Pitt-Johnstown: Bob Rukavina -- 468-330, 29th Year
  • Rukavina, who earned his 450th win at Pitt-Johnstown with an 88-67 victory at California(Pa.) on Feb. 15, 2017, is in his 29th season with an overall record of 468-330.  He entered the 2017-18 season ranked among the leaders of active Division II coaches in wins (453) and winning percentage (.587).
  • Prior to Bob Rukavina's arrival in 1989, Pitt-Johnstown had only four winning seasons since its inception in 1969. He has led the Mountain Cats to four NCAA Tournament appearances and seven 20-win seasons.
  • He was named the 2015-16 PSAC West Coach of the Year after UPJ finished with an 18-11 record and posted a first-round PSAC Tournament win over Seton Hill.
  • UPJ has made four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and has posted seven 20-win seasons, including four in a row from 2005-06 through 2008-09.
  • In 2007-08, Pitt-Johnstown became a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC).  That year, Rukavina guided Pitt-Johnstown to a 23-8 overall record and the WVIAC regular season title with a 17-3 conference record.  He was named the 2007-08 WVIAC Coach of the Year, while leading the Mountain Cats to their third NCAA Tournament appearance.  In 2008-09, Pitt-Johnstown won the WVIAC Tournament title and advanced to its second straight NCAA Tournament.
  • Pitt-Johnstown joined the PSAC to begin the 2013-14 season. Rukavina has guided the Mountain Cats to four consecutive conference tournament berths, including back-to-back appearances in the quarterfinals in 2016 and 2017.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • After winning five of the previous six games, Edinboro ended the regular season with back-to-back losses to enter the postseason with a 16-10 overall record and 13-9 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots are the fourth seed out of the Western Division thanks to a pair of regular season wins over Pitt-Johnstown. They were picked to finish eighth out of nine teams in the PSAC Coaches' Preseason Poll. Edinboro fell to Mercyhurst on Senior Day this past Saturday, 92-84.
  • Edinboro has now qualified for postseason action three times in the last four years under head coach Pat Cleary. The 16 wins is the highest win total since Cleary took over as head coach. His 2015-16 squad finished 15-11.      
  • Four of Edinboro's losses have come on buzzer-beaters, with three at McComb Fieldhouse. The Kutztown setback came on a basket with 0.8 seconds remaining, as the Golden Bears prevailed 91-89. A week later, Edinboro again lost in the final seconds as IUP hit a 3-pointer with 1.8 ticks showing for a 70-67 win. Mercyhurst hit the game-winner with 13.2 seconds to play to hand the Scots an 80-79 defeat. In the most recent loss, Gannon's Zay Jackson made three free throws with 0.4 seconds showing to hand the Scots a 72-71 defeat.
  • After a year filled with injuries in 2016-17, Edinboro has been able to start the same starting five in all 26 games. The Fighting Scots rank seventh in the PSAC in scoring offense (79.9 ppg.) and are ninth in scoring defense (75.5 ppg.). They are third in turnover margin (+1.58), second in free throw percentage (78.3 pct.), and third in the 3-pointers made per game (9.3).. 
  • Keshawn LigginsAnthony Coleman, and Jaymon Mason are combining for over 56 points per game. Each is capable of putting up big numbers. They have combined for 11 30-point games. with Liggins reaching the mark in seven contests. The last came on Saturday as he dropped in 30 points against Mercyhurst. He dropped in a career-high 39 points vs. Seton Hill in the first meeting. Coleman posted a season-best 32-point effort at Gannon, and had 30 points in the upset of then eighth-ranked Shippensburg. When Coleman led Edinboro with 19 points at Lock Haven, it marked the only time this season Edinboro has not had a scorer reach 20 points.  Mason has now had 15 career 30-point games after scoring a season-high 33 points against Kutztown, his second 30-point effort of the year. He had 32 points vs. Daemen.
  • Jaymon Mason, a preseason All-American and two-time honorable mention All-American, battled an early-season injury, but on Saturday he became Edinboro's all-time leading scorer. The 6'3" redshirt senior broke the record previously held by his father, Tyrone Mason.  He now has 1,976 career points. Mason has had four straight 20-game efforts, including 25 points against Mercyhurst, making 6-of-10 3-pointers, and 21 vs. IUP last Wednesday. Mason is averaging 16.7 ppg., and over the last four games that figure is 23.0 ppg. He is second on the team with 87 assists and has made 65-of-167 3-pointers. He ranks fourth in career assists with 402.
  • Keshawn Liggins was selected the Division II Bulletin Player of the Month for January. He has had 15 double-doubles and has pulled down 10-or-more rebounds in 16 contests. His 15th double-double came on Saturday as he finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds vs. Mercyhurst. The 6'5" senior leads the PSAC in scoring (23.9 ppg.) and ranks eighth in Division II, and is third and 14th, respectively, in rebounding (10.5 rpg.). He had his seventh 30-point game of the season against Mercyhurst. He scored a career-high 39 points vs. Seton Hill and 38 against Charleston. Liggins is a transfer from Idaho State and has been an ironman, ranking sixth in the country in minutes per game (38.3). His 15 double-doubles ranks third in the PSAC and 11th in Division II.
  • Liggins has scored 622 points this season, which ranks fourth in a season at Edinboro. Warren Chance is third with 635 points.
  • Anthony Coleman is a multi-faceted scorer who can burn the opposition from deep, or drive strong to the basket. The transfer from Cincinnati State CC displayed the former in the first meeting with. Gannon as he burned the Golden Knights for a season-high 32 points, making 7-of-12 3-pointers. The latter was in evidence against Clarion in the first meeting, as the 6'3" guard consistently drove to the hoop, ending the night with 24 points (8-of-12 FGs, 8-of-10 FTs). He added 10 rebounds for his first double-double. Coleman has had six games of 20-or-more points, including 30 points in an upset of Shippensburg. He joins Mason as a top 3-point threat on the team, making 64-of-158 3-pointers. The two are tied for seventh in 3-pointers made per game (2.5).  
  • The Fighting Scots posted the biggest win in Cleary's four-plus seasons as head coach earlier this year, an 88-86 triumph over eighth-ranked Shippensburg. Edinboro had previously upset 16th-ranked Indiana(Pa.), 79-77 in overtime, in 2014-15. 
  • A two-year starter at right tackle on the offensive lineman, Trey Staunch has now made a name for himself on the hardwood. A former standout in football and basketball at West Middlesex High School, the 6'4", 265 lb. junior is playing a larger role each game. He is averaging 7.2 points and 3.4 rebounds. He is an excellent free throw shooter, hitting 85.3 percent at the charity stripe to rank seventh in the PSAC. Staunch joined the basketball team at the conclusion of the football season.
  • The combination of Jack Frank  and Staunch provides the Fighting Scots with plenty of production in the post. Frank, a 6'8" junior, is Edinboro's second-leading rebounder at 6.0 per game. He pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds in the first meeting with California(Pa.) and added 11 vs. Clarion in meeting number one.
  • Mike Beck recently had the best game of his career as the 6'4" senior scored a career-high 23 points against Slippery Rock. He made 5-of-8 3-pointers while playing his usual strong defense. Beck has made 37-of-96 3-pointers while averaging 6.4 ppg. He has been assigned some of the top scorers in the PSAC defensively.
  • The freshman tandem of Alex Jay and Jaryn Simpson possesses some impressive genes and have provided the Fighting Scots with valuable minutes. Jay is the son of Sarah (Bishop) Jay, who ranks fourth in career scoring for the Edinboro women's basketball team, Simpson's father Bronze, is one of the all-time leading scorers and rebounders at Gannon. Jay, a 6'3" guard, is averaging 3.3 ppg. in 13.1 minutes per game and has made 17-of-49 3-pointers. Simpson, a 6'1" guard, is also averaging 3.3 ppg. with 49 assists in 14.2 minutes per game.

Scouting the Mountain Cats
  • Pitt-Johnstown is making its fourth straight PSAC Tournament appearance and comes in with a 15-11 record, winning five of the last six games. The lone loss in that stretch was an 89-63 loss at Slippery Rock. The Mountain Cats come in as the fifth seed after posting a 13-9 record in PSAC action.  They were originally picked to finish sixth in the PSAC West after posting a 19-11 record a record ago and reaching the PSAC quarterfinals for the second straight year. Now they are in search of a third straight quarterfinal berth. 
  • Long-time head coach Bob Rukavina is the dean of the PSAC coaches, now in his 29th season as the head coach at UPJ. He has a 468-330 career record  
  • UPJ has played in more than its fair share of close games. The Mountain Cats are 7-9 in games deciced by five points-or-less. However, they began the year losing the first seven games deciced by that margin, and have since won seven of nine.     
  • The Mountain Cats' lineup features a pair of 1,000-point scorers in Dale Clancy and Isaac Vescovi. Clancy, a first team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, is a senior guard who has scored 1,447 career points. He also ranks in the top ten in career assists and 3-pointers made. Clancy ranks fourth in the PSAC in assists per game (4.9), is tied for sixth in steals (1.9), and is tied for fourth in 3-pointers made per game (2.0). He is averaging 16.7 ppg. and has made 75-of-194 3-pointers. He has 127 assists and 49 steals.   
  • Vescovi became the 29th UPJ player with 1,000 career points earlier this year, and now has 1,376 points. The senior forward ranks sixth in the PSAC in scoring at 21.0 ppg., adding 5.1 rpg. The 6'6" Vescovi ranks third in the PSAC in field goal percentage at 57.0 pct. (221-of-388). He also ranks second in the conference in free throw percentage at 88.6 pct. (78-of-88).
  • Like Edinboro, the Mountain Cats possess a trio of scorers, with Josh Wise averaging 15.0 ppg. He is a 6'3" sophomore guard, who adds 5.7 rpg., second on the team. Levi Masua is the team's leading rebounder at 7.7 per game. Masua is a 6'6" senior who also has a team-high 38 blocks.
  • Pitt-Johnstown averages 77.5 ppg., good for tenth in the PSAC. The Mountain Cats are sixth in scoring defense at 73.8 ppg. They are fourth in the PSAC in field goal percentage at 48.4 pct., and rank third in free throw percentage at 75.6 pct.
