The Game Story
  • Picked to finish eighth in the PSAC Coaches' Preseason Poll, Edinboro has won back-to-back games in the PSAC Tournament to reach the PSAC Final Four for the first time since 2008. The fourth-seeded Fighting Scots used a late rally to hand fifth seed Pitt-Johnstown a 77-67 defeat in the first round of the PSAC Tournament on Monday. On Wednesday, Edinboro traveled to Indiana(Pa) and upset the Western Division's top seed, 79-63.  Edinboro improved to 18-10 with the win after finishing 13-9 in the PSAC West during the regular season.
  • Edinboro squares off against an East Stroudsburg squad that is the Eastern Division regular season champion. The Warriors used a frenetic, pressing style to post a 22-5 record to date, defeating Kutztown, 85-71, in the quarterfinals. The Warriors are 18-4 in the PSAC East and own a 13-2 ledger in Koehler Fieldhouse. They lead the PSAC in scoring and rank fourth in Division II at 93.5 ppg.
  • The Edinboro-East Stroudsburg semifinal game tips off at 3:30 p.m. It is preceded by the other semifinal game at 1 p.m., featuring Gannon (21-8), the number two seed out of the Western Division, and Shippensburg (23-6), the number three seed out of the Eastern Division. Saturday's winners will meet in the PSAC Championship game at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
  • East Stroudsburg is ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region rankings. Shippensburg is ranked seventh, and Gannon tenth.
  • The Edinboro-East Stroudsburg is a matchup of the PSAC Coaches of the Year. Pat Cleary is in his fifth season as Edinboro's head coach and won the honor for the first time. Jeff Wilson is in his 16th season at ESU and has now been named the PSAC East Coach of the Year three times.
  • Edinboro is making its first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since the 2007-08 season. The Fighting Scots reached the semifinals thanks to a 79-63 win over a depleted but top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) team. The Fighting Scots were playing their fourth game in eight days. Edinboro grabbed the lead for good three minutes into the game and would build a 40-27 lead at the half. IUP would get no closer than eight points in the second half, as the Fighting Scots maintained a double-digit lead over the final 20 minutes. Edinboro shot just under 50 percent from the floor and made 13-of-29 3-pointers. The Big Three of Jaymon Mason (24 points), Keshawn Liggins (22), and Anthony Coleman (15) once again led the way, combining for 61 points.     
  • Edinboro's 18 wins mark the most victories during Pat Cleary's five-year reign as head coach. A year ago, an injury-ravaged team ended the year at 8-18 and they entered the 2017-18 campaign picked to finish eighth in the PSAC Coaches' Preseason Poll. Edinboro is making its third appearance in the last four years in the PSAC Tournament.  
  • Jaymon Mason became Edinboro's all-time leading scorer last Saturday as the redshirt senior guard broke his father Tyrone Mason's record. He now has 1,999 career points, breaking the old mark of 1,954 points. That total also places him in a tie for 13th all-time in the PSAC. Shippensburg's Dustin Sleva enters the semifinals with 1,989 points. Christian Mortellite of Bloomsburg wrapped up his career last week with 2,037 points. He also ranks fourth in career assists (412) at Edinboro, among many other records categories that he is in the top ten in.
  • Edinboro battled back this season after suffering four losses in the final seconds. The most recent was a 72-71 setback to Gannon on February 10. The Golden Knights made three free throws with 0.4 seconds left to claim the win. In addition, on January 6 Kutztown scored the winning 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining for a 91-89 win, and Indiana(Pa.)'s winning three came with 1.8 seconds showing, for a 70-67 victory on January 13. Mercyhurst hit their game-winning 3-pointer with 13.2 seconds remaining in an 80-79 loss on January 24. That broke a 76-76 tie.
  • The Fighting Scots rank seventh in the PSAC in scoring offense (79.8 ppg.) and are also seventh in scoring defense (74.7 ppg.). East Stroudsburg leads the PSAC and ranks fourth in Division II in scoring at 93.5 ppg., while standing 12th in scoring defense (79.5 ppg.). The teams rank highly in several other categories, as well. Edinboro is second in 3-point field goal percentage (38.0 pct.), third in 3-pointers per game (9.2). The Fighting Scots are second in the PSAC in free throw percentage (79.8 pct.) and fourth in turnover margin (+1.4). ESU leads the PSAC in turnover margin (+7.4), is second in field goal percentage (48.9 pct.), and fourth in 3-point percentage (36.4 pct.) and three's per game (9.0).
  • The PSAC announced its postseason honorees on Thursday, with Edinboro well-represented. Pat Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. Keshawn Liggins and Jaymon Mason earned first team All-PSAC West accolades, while Anthony Coleman was named to the second team. Mason is now a three-time All-PSAC West honoree, and was also the 2015 PSAC West Freshman of the Year.   
  • The threesome of Keshawn LigginsAnthony Coleman, and Jaymon Mason combine for almost 56 points per game. Liggins leads the PSAC in scoring (23.9 ppg.), good for seventh in Division II, and is third in rebounding in the PSAC at 10.4 rpg., ranking 15th nationally. He was selected the Division II Bulletin Player of the Month for January. He has had 16 double-doubles. Liggins has scored 670 points, the third-highest season total, and has had seven 30-point games. 
  • Jaymon Mason and Anthony Coleman add 16.7 and 15.2 ppg., respectively. The threesome has combined for 30-or-more points 11 times. In addition, the Fighting Scots have had at least one of the three reach 20 points in every game but one.

Edinboro in the PSAC Tournament
  • Edinboro is making its third appearance in the last four years under head coach Pat Cleary. Monday's 77-67 win over Pitt-Johnstown marked the first postseason victory for head coach Pat Cleary. He evened his playoff record at 2-2 with Wednesday's win at IUP. Two years ago, Edinboro hosted Clarion and suffered an 83-69 loss in the first round. In 2014-15, Edinboro fell at Slippery Rock, 64-60. The Fighting Scots' last PSAC Tournament win came in 2012-13. The final season of head coach Greg Walcavich's long tenure, Edinboro defeated Mercyhurst at McComb Fieldhouse, 65-60, in a first round game before falling at IUP, 89-87 in overtime in the quarterfinals..
  • Edinboro is in search of its fifth PSAC championship. The Fighting Scots won three under Walcavich – in 1998, 2005, and 2006 – along with winning the 1968 PSAC Championship game.

The Last Meeting

  • Jaymon Mason scored 26 points, but it was far from enough against a hot-shooting East Stroudsburg team that handed Edinboro a 107-70 loss at McComb Fieldhouse.
  • The Warriors shot 60.6 percent for the game (40-of-66), and that figure was considerably higher most of the game. In the first half, ESU was at 69.7 percent (23-of-33) as they took a 56-33 lead at halftime. ESU also held a 40-31 edge on the glass and forced Edinboro into 18 turnovers, accounting for a 22-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • Edinboro, meanwhile, shot 41.0 percent from the floor for the game (25-of-61), and made just 4-of-17 3-pointers. They were 16-of-20 at the line.
  • Mason missed five of his first six shots but rallied to go 7-for-15 from the floor, including 3-of-5 3-pointers, and was 9-for-10 at the line.
  • Mikael Anderson was the only other fighting Scot in double figures, scoring 12 points before fouling out. Jack Frank finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
  • Twelve different players scored for East Stroudsburg, with four in double figures. Rasheed Moore made 9-of-11 field goals on his way to a 25-point effort, adding seven rebounds. Quindell Brice added 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, with Kitt Najee Walls totaling 14 points and Steven Stoney 11.

Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 65-68, 5th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • On Thursday, Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. He has now led the Fighting Scots to the PSAC Tournament in three of the last four years. the win over Pitt-Johnstown on Monday was his first postseason victory after two previous losses. 
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. A year ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
East Stroudsburg: Jeff Wilson (East Stroudsburg '86) -- 293-162, 16th year    
  • In the last 16 years, Jeff Wilson has turned East Stroudsburg into one of the premier programs in the PSAC. He has a 293-162 record, moving into tenth place among PSAC coaches in career wins. He was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year earlier this week.
  • Wilson, an assistant coach on ESU's 1990 PSAC championship team, has returned the Warriors to a position of prominence since he was named head coach in 2002-03, culminating with the top season in school history in 2014 - winning ESU's second PSAC championship in three seasons and finishing as NCAA Division II Atlantic Region runner-up while compiling a 30-2 record.
  • Wilson has led ESU to nine straight PSAC Tournament appearances (including six straight Final Four trips from 2010-15) and four NCAA Tournament appearances (2010, 2012-14) since the start of the 2009-10 season. The Warriors are 192-72 in that stretch.
  • The Warriors have also claimed five PSAC East regular season titles in the last nine years (2010, 13-15, 18), becoming the first PSAC East team to win three straight divisional titles since 1985-87 (Millersville), and the first to win three straight outright divisional titles since 1976-80 (Cheyney).
  • Wilson was named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year by the Basketball Times and CollegeInsider.com and the NABC DII Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 2014. He was also named the region's top coach in 2010, and was PSAC East Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2013.
  • A 1986 graduate of ESU, Wilson has been a member of the ESU men's basketball program for 28 of the last 34 years - three as a player, 10 as an assistant coach and the last 15 as head coach. He was an assistant coach from 1986-95 and returned as head coach in 2002.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro is appearing in the PSAC semifinals for the first time since 2008.  The fourth-seeded Fighting Scots advanced to the PSAC quarterfinals with a 77-67 win over fifth seed Pitt-Johnstown in the first round on Monday. On Wednesday, they upset PSAC West regular season champion IUP, 79-63. Edinboro has an 18-10 record after finishing at 13-9 in PSAC action.
  • Edinboro has now qualified for postseason action three times in the last four years under head coach Pat Cleary. The 18 wins is the highest win total since Cleary took over as head coach. His 2015-16 squad finished 15-11.      
  • Four of Edinboro's losses have come on buzzer-beaters, with three at McComb Fieldhouse. The Kutztown setback came on a basket with 0.8 seconds remaining, as the Golden Bears prevailed 91-89. A week later, Edinboro again lost in the final seconds as IUP hit a 3-pointer with 1.8 ticks showing for a 70-67 win. Mercyhurst hit the game-winner with 13.2 seconds to play to hand the Scots an 80-79 defeat. In the most recent loss, Gannon's Zay Jackson made three free throws with 0.4 seconds showing to hand the Scots a 72-71 defeat.
  • After a year filled with injuries in 2016-17, Edinboro has been able to start the same starting five in all 28 games. The Fighting Scots rank seventh in the PSAC in both scoring offense (79.8 ppg.) and scoring defense (74.7 ppg.). They are second in free throw percentage (79.8 pct.) and 3-point field goal percentage (38.0 pct.),  third in 3-pointers made per game (9.2), and fourth in turnover margin (+1.4).

They have combined for 11 30-point games. with Liggins reaching the mark in seven contests. The last came last Saturday as he dropped in 30 points against Mercyhurst. He scored a career-high 39 points vs. Seton Hill in the first meeting. Coleman posted a season-best 32-point effort at Gannon, and had 30 points in the upset of then eighth-ranked Shippensburg. When Coleman led Edinboro with 19 points at Lock Haven, it marked the only time this season Edinboro has not had a scorer reach 20 points.  Mason has now had 15 career 30-point games after scoring a season-high 33 points against Kutztown, his second 30-point effort of the year. He had 32 points vs. Daemen.
  • Jaymon Mason, a preseason All-American and two-time honorable mention All-American, battled an early-season injury, but last Saturday he became Edinboro's all-time leading scorer. The 6'3" redshirt senior broke the record previously held by his father, Tyrone Mason.  He now has 1,999 career points, leaving him one point shy of becoming the 13th player in PSAC history to score 2,000 career points (NOTE: Shippensburg's Dustin Sleva has 1,989 career points and will play in the first semifinal game at 1 p.m.). Mason has scored 20-or-more points in four of the last five games, including 25 points against Mercyhurst, making 6-of-10 3-pointers. He had 24 points in the quarterfinal win at IUP, adding six assists without a turnover.  Mason is averaging 16.7 ppg. He leads the team with 97 assists and is also the top 3-point threat with 71 in 182 attempts. He ranks fourth in career assists with 412.
  • Keshawn Liggins was selected the Division II Bulletin Player of the Month for January. He has had 16 double-doubles and has pulled down 10-or-more rebounds in 17 contests. His 16th double-double came on Monday as he finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds vs. UPJ.  The 6'5" senior leads the PSAC in scoring (23.9 ppg.) and ranks seventh in Division II, and is third and 15th, respectively, in rebounding (10.4 rpg.). He had his seventh 30-point game of the season against Mercyhurst. He scored a career-high 39 points vs. Seton Hill and 38 against Charleston. Liggins is a transfer from Idaho State and has been an ironman, ranking sixth in the country in minutes per game (38.5). His 16 double-doubles ranks third in the PSAC and 12th in Division II.
  • Liggins has scored 670 points this season, which ranks third in a season at Edinboro. Tyrone Mason holds the top two figures with 800 points in 1995-96 and 691 in 1994-95.
  • Anthony Coleman is a multi-faceted scorer who can burn the opposition from deep, or drive strong to the basket. The transfer from Cincinnati State CC displayed the former in the first meeting with. Gannon as he burned the Golden Knights for a season-high 32 points, making 7-of-12 3-pointers. The latter was in evidence against Clarion in the first meeting, as the 6'3" guard consistently drove to the hoop, ending the night with 24 points (8-of-12 FGs, 8-of-10 FTs). He added 10 rebounds for his first double-double. Coleman has had six games of 20-or-more points, including 30 points in an upset of Shippensburg. He averages 15.2 ppg. and is third in rebounding at 4.6 rpg.  He joins Mason as a top 3-point threat on the team, making 67-of-165 3-pointers.  ???????
  • Trey Staunch has been a mainstay for the football team the last two years a starter at right tackle on the offensive line. He is now making a name for himself on the hardwood, and against Mercyhurst he was dominating. A former standout in football and basketball at West Middlesex High School, the 6'4", 265 lb. junior made 8-of-10 field goals and 6-of-6 free throws to finish with a season-high 22 points. He added nine rebounds, falling one rebound shy of his second double-double. He is averaging 7.8 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 54.6 percent from the floor and 86.7 percent at the charity stripe to rank sixth in the PSAC in the latter category. Staunch joined the basketball team at the conclusion of the football season.
  • The combination of Jack Frank  and Staunch provides the Fighting Scots with plenty of production in the post. Frank, a 6'8" junior, is Edinboro's second-leading rebounder at 6.0 per game. He pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds in the first meeting with California(Pa.).
  • Mike Beck recently had the best game of his career as the 6'4" senior scored a career-high 23 points against Slippery Rock. He made 5-of-8 3-pointers while playing his usual strong defense. Beck has made 39-of-104 3-pointers while averaging 6.3 ppg. He has been assigned some of the top scorers in the PSAC defensively.
  • The freshman tandem of Alex Jay and Jaryn Simpson possesses some impressive genes and have provided the Fighting Scots with valuable minutes. Jay is the son of Sarah (Bishop) Jay, who ranks fourth in career scoring for the Edinboro women's basketball team, Simpson's father Bronze, is one of the all-time leading scorers and rebounders at Gannon. Both saw meaningful minutes vs. UPJ on Monday. Jay, a 6'3" guard, is averaging 3.3 ppg. in 12.9 minutes per game and has made 18-of-51 3-pointers. The 18th three was a four-point play in the second half on Monday. Simpson, a 6'1" guard, is averaging 3.4 ppg. with 51 assists in 14.1 minutes per game. He had seven points and five rebounds in 18 minutes on Monday.

Scouting the Warriors
  • East Stroudsburg won its fourth PSAC East title in the last six years, and on Wednesday defeated Kutztown, 85-71, in the quarterfinals. That placed ESU in the Final Four for the seventh time in the last nine years. The top-seeded Warriors have a 22-5 overall record and were 18-4 in the PSAC East. They are 13-2 at Koehler Fieldhouse. ESU is ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region rankings.
  • Head coach Jeff Wilson is in his 16th season and was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year for the third time on Thursday. He has built the Warriors into one of the top teams in the PSAC thanks to a deep roster and a pressing, fast-paced style. ESU ranks first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II in scoring at 93.5 ppg. They also lead the PSAC in turnover margin (+7.4). The Warriors have scored 100-or-more points ten times.
  • ESU enters the PSAC semifinals riding an eight-game winning streak and has won 11 of their last 12 games.   
  • Ten different players average over 12 minutes per game. Six players average nine-or-more points, with three averaging in double digits. Leading the way is redshirt senior Steve Harris, who was named to the All-PSAC East first team. The 6'7" forward averages 14.9 ppg. and is also the leading rebounder at 7.3 per game. He leads the PSAC in field goal percentage (65.5 pct.) and has made 92-of-152 free throws. Harris also has a team-high 36 blocks. He has pushed his career totals to 972 points and 622 rebounds, ninth in school history.
  • Redshirt junior Jakwan Jones earned second team All-PSAC East accolades. The 6'0" guard is just sixth on the team in scoring at 9.0 ppg., but he ranks second in the PSAC in assists per game (6.1), third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2), fourth in steals (2.0 spg) and fourth in free throw percentage (87.3) in his first season as ESU's starting point guard. Jones has 164 assists and just 73 turnovers. He also has a team-high 55 steals.
  • Kobi Nwandu and Nick Giordano also score in double figures at 12.5 and 11.5 ppg., respectively. Nwandu, a 6'6" sophomore, is shooting 56.6 percent from the floor, fourth in the PSAC. Giordano, a 6'1" junior, is the team's top 3-point threat with 63 in 159 attempts.
  • Ralik Wise is a 6'5" senior who ranks second on the team in rebounding (5.3 rpg.) and shoots 52.8 pct. from the floor while averaging 9.3 ppg. Marc Rodriguez, a 6'3" freshman, has made 62 baskets, with 50 of those 3-pointers on 117 attempts. Ryan Krawczeniuk, a 6'2" senior, has made 45-of-121 three's and averages 9.3 ppg.  
  • ESU leads the PSAC in scoring (93.5 ppg), assists (20.6 apg), turnover margin (+7.4), turnovers forced (22.3), steals (12.3 spg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.38) with Harris and Jones at the forefront.
