The Game Story

  • Saturday marks the end of a three-game road trip for Edinboro when the Fighting Scots face Pitt-Johnstown at 1:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots will look to get back into the winning column, as a last-second basket by Kutztown snapped a six-game winning streak on Wednesday, 72-70. Edinboro ranks third in the PSAC West at 9-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play. In addition, the Fighting Scots currently rank among teams "also receiving votes" in the WBCA Division II Top 25 and are seventh in the latest D2SIDA Atlantic Region poll.
  • Ciara Rosten and Michaela Barnes are quietly approaching their 1,000th career point, respectively. Against the Golden Bears, Rosten improved her career point total to 966 with 16 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out six assists. Barnes eclipsed 900 career points at Kutztown. She finished with 906 points, scoring 14 on 6-of-9 shooting. The 5'5" guard has shot over 50.0 pct. from the floor in five consecutive contests.
  • Michelle Jahn moved into second place in career 3-pointers made on Wednesday night. Of the five field goals she made, four were from long-range. Jahn entered the game having made 221 career 3-pointers, just two 3's shy of moving up the career list. She ended the game with 15 points and nine rebounds. In addition to making 225 career three-point field goals, the 5'8" guard ranks 18th in career scoring with 1,239.
  • Jontay Walton was the final Fighting Scot to score double digits, adding 11 points and seven assists. The 5'6" guard has scored in double figures in all 12 games this season and 28 consecutive contests, dating back to last season. The 6'2" senior was an honorable mention WBCA All-American, while also being named the PSAC West Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to Rosten, Jontay Walton was a first-team All-PSAC West choice, while Michelle Jahn and Michaela Barnes were second-team selections.
  • Pitt-Johnstown is en route to having one of its best seasons this decade. While being picked to finish eighth in the Western Division in the PSAC coaches' preseason poll, the Mountain Cats stand at 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC West. Their overall win total is only three games shy of the program's most wins since the 2012-13 campaign. A year ago, the Mountain Cats went 10-17 overall and 7-15 in the conference, finishing eighth in the west standings. • Leading 17-15 through one quarter, Edinboro outscored Pitt-Johnstown 22-9 in the second period for a 39-24 halftime lead. After UPJ started the second quarter by regaining the lead at 18-17, Ciara Rosten responded with a layup on Edinboro's next possession. Her layup would be the start of a 17-2 scoring run spanning nearly six minutes. Rosten's layup also put Edinboro on top for the rest of the game.
  • The Fighting Scots continued their defensive performance into the second half, holding UPJ to nine field goals over the final two quarters. Edinboro's lead was never cut to single digits, leading by as much as 26 points with 3:54 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • Edinboro shot 46.4 percent (32-of-69) overall, 6-of-19 on 3-pointers, and 6-of-10 on their free throws. Pitt-Johnstown converted 34.5 percent (19-of-55) of its shots, while going 4-of-12 from long-range, and 11-of-16 at the charity stripe.

She collected eight boards, including five offensively.
  • Gabrielle Smith led the Mountain Cats with 13 points and seven rebounds. Olivia McCabe and Nicole Olkosky each contributed 10 points apiece in the loss. McCabe led the Mountain Cats on the glass, bringing down eight boards, including five on the offensive glass. Alexis Hartwick added three steals.

Head Coach: Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) -- 9-3, 1st year
  • Callie Wheeler was officially named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. That includes a string of eight straight 20-win seasons, including last year when the Fighting Scots ended the season with a 27-4 record. Edinboro won its fourth PSAC Championship in her 11 years and went on to reach the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional semifinals. It marked the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in her tenure as assistant coach, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2013-14.
  • Any doubts of Wheeler's ability to take over as head coach were alleviated when Wheeler filled in for a pair of games in late January last year. With Swank away from the team for his father's funeral, Wheeler guided the Fighting Scots to a 74-52 win at Slippery Rock, followed by a 73-54 victory over a Mercyhurst team, which had defeated California (Pa.) in its previous game.
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006.
  • The 5'5" guard finished as Edinboro's second-leading scorer at 12.5 ppg. as a senior, and also added 5.1 rpg. More importantly, she set a school record with 249 assists while turning the ball over just 89 times. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • Edinboro had had just one triple-double in its history prior to 2005-06 when Wheeler accomplished the fete twice. The first came against Seton Hill (20 points, 11 rebounds, 14 assists), followed by 29 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in her final home appearance vs. Shippensburg.
  • As a junior, Wheeler earned second-team All-PSAC West accolades, after averaging 10.4 ppg. and handing out 225 assists, along with recording 91 steals. The assists rank third all-time. She led the Fighting Scots to a 21-10 record that season, along with the team's first berth in the NCAA Division II Playoffs since 1998.
  • Wheeler likely ranks at the top in a long line of standout point guards at Edinboro. While not taking over as the starter until her junior season, she concluded her career with 682 assists, despite missing the final seven games of the 2003-04 campaign due to an injury. That figure is second all-time in the PSAC. In addition, Wheeler finished with 283 career steals, a figure which ranks fourth all-time at Edinboro. She fell just shy of reaching 1,000 points for her career, finishing with 932.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.

Edinboro is among teams "also receiving votes" in the WBCA Division II Top 25 and is seventh in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region poll.

Over the last five games, the 5'5" guard has shot over 50.0 pct. (64.1 pct. on 41-of-64 shooting) from the floor.  A second-team All-PSAC West selection and the PSAC Tournament MVP a year ago, Barnes leads the Fighting Scots in scoring with 19.4 ppg., on 52.6 pct. Shooting. That ranks seventh and second in the PSAC, respectively.
  • Ciara Rosten led the Fighting Scots in scoring at Kutztown with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while collecting seven rebounds, and distributing six assists. Like Barnes, the reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Year and Defense Athlete of the Year is approaching her 1,000th career point with 966. Averaging 13.2 ppg., the redshirt senior leads the Fighting Scots and the PSAC with 1.9 bpg. In addition, Rosten has brought down 8.8 rpg., which is tied for the conference lead. The 6'2" forward ranks third on the team with 34 assists and has averaged 7.0 apg. over the last three games.
  • Jontay Walton contributed 11 points and dished out a game-high seven assists for the Fighting Scots. In addition to increasing her career scoring total to 1,026 points, Walton has scored in double figures in all 12 games this season and 28 consecutive contests overall. A graduate student, Walton was named a first-team All-PSAC West selection a year ago. She ranks second on the team and tenth in the league in scoring with 17.3 ppg. Her 5.1 apg and 35 steals rank second and third in the conference, respectively. In addition, the 5'6" guard ranks fourth in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage with a 38.5 pct. clip (25-of-65) and in free throw shooting at 85.5 percent (59-of-69).
  • Bridgette Shaffer came up two points shy of her third double-double of the season. The 5'8" redshirt junior grabbed team-high 10 rebounds and scored eight points at Kutztown. This season, she has averaged 9.1 ppg. and 7.3 rpg. In 10 straight games, she has grabbed 5.0+ rebounds, including four contests in double digits.
  • Edinboro looks to extend a streak of eight straight seasons with 20-or-more wins. During that period, the Fighting Scots own a 193-50 record. They won their fifth PSAC championship a year ago, and fourth since 2011.

Scouting the Mountain Cats

  • Pitt-Johnstown has won four of its last five contests, including a 68-61 victory at Gannon on Wednesday night. With the win, the Mountain Cats improved to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC West.

This season, the Mountain Cats are currently tied with Seton Hill and Slippery Rock with a 4-3 mark in the PSAC West. • Fighting Scot alum Dr. Reneé Brown serves as UPJ's assistant coach. While at Edinboro, Brown was a three-time PSAC West selection, earning first team accolades two times and second team recognition once. She was also named the 2008-09 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. Brown finished her career scoring 1,430 points for eighth all-time and grabbed 735 rebounds for seventh in the career list.
  • Pitt-Johnstown returns four of its five starters from last season, with the lone absentee being Olivia McCabe. McCabe was the program's first-ever first team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, averaging 13.9 ppg. and 10.2 rpg. Her void has been filled by Alli McGrath, a transfer from the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
  • Along with teammate Gabrielle Smith, the duo rank among the top five scorers in the PSAC. McGrath and Smith are both tied for fourth in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 20.6 ppg.
