The Game Story
  • Edinboro continues its four-game homestand on Wednesday night hosting local rival Mercyhurst. The contest marks the midway point of the Fighting Scots' PSAC West schedule this season. On Saturday, Edinboro used a strong shooting performance in the first quarter vs. Slippery Rock, to improve to 12-5 overall and 8-4 in the PSAC West with an 85-64 win.
  • The Fighting Scots enter Wednesday's game having won their last two contests. They rank third in the Western Division standings and are ninth in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region poll. The Lakers rank eighth in the West at 8-11 overall and 5-7 in league play. Over the weekend, Mercyhurst began a three-game road trip at 13th-ranked California(Pa.). The Lakers held the Vulcans to 36.8 percent shooting in a 62-56 road loss. Mercyhurst's three games feature the top three teams in the division, as its final contest is at nationally-ranked Indiana(Pa.).
  • Wednesday is Fighting Scots Fighting Hunger Night. Fans can receive free admission with the donation of a non-perishable food item. All items donated will go to the Edinboro Food Bank.
  • Michaela Barnes is nearing her 1,000th career point, just 12 points shy with 988. Upon scoring her 1,000th point, the Fighting Scots will set program history in a couple departments. With teammates Michelle Jahn, Jontay Walton, and Ciara Rosten all scoring 1,000+ career points at Edinboro, it will mark the first time four players with such accomplishment will have played a game together at the same time. In addition, with Walton and Rosten each scoring their 1,000th point as a Fighting Scot earlier this season, it will be the first time three players reach the plateau in the same year.
  • On the career scoring list, Jahn ranks 15th with 1,286 points, Walton is 26th at 1,126, and Rosten stands in 31st with 1,026.
  • Edinboro swept the last season series with the Lakers. In the first meeting on January 24, the Scots picked up a 73-54 win up in Erie. The win was also the third of a nine-game winning streak for the Fighting Scots, who never trailed in the contest. A month later to the exact date, Edinboro hosted Mercyhurst in its Senior Day contest. Whitney Allen and Ayana Vaughn were sent off in winning fashion with an 81-63 defeat of the Lakers. All things told, Edinboro has won 13 of the last 14 meetings.
  • A year ago, the Fighting Scots finished with a 27-4 record a year ago, winning the PSAC championship and advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. Four starters return from that squad. All-American Ciara Rosten leads the way. The 6'2" senior was an honorable mention WBCA All-American, while also being named the PSAC West Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to Rosten, Jontay Walton was a first-team All-PSAC West choice, while Michelle Jahn and Michaela Barnes were second-team selections.
  • Edinboro ranks third in the PSAC and 14th in Division II in scoring offense, averaging 78.9 ppg., and is eighth in the conference in defense at 68.8 ppg. Mercyhurst ranks 10th in the conference in both scoring offense (68.1 ppg.) and defense (70.0 ppg.).

Last Meeting
February 24, 2018 – No. 15 Edinboro 81, Mercyhurst 63 at Edinboro, Pa. - BOX | RECAP
  • Edinboro clinched the number two seed in the PSAC Tournament with an 81-63 win over Mercyhurst at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots used a fast getaway to build a big lead. Head coach Stan Swank's team led 24-13 after one period, and expanded that advantage to 47-30 at the half. The lead would grow to as many as 21 points at 53-32 early in the third quarter.
  • The young Lakers would outscore Edinboro, 8-1, over the final four minutes to pull to within 57-45 after three quarters. Mercyhurst inched to within eight points at 60-52 with 9:11 to play on Eliza Oswalt's 3-pointer, but Edinboro answered with a 9-2 burst as Michelle Jahn accounted for six points on a 3-pointer, free throw, and a layup. That made it 69-54 with just over six minutes to play. The lead never got under double figures after that.
  • Michaela Barnes stole the show on Senior Day as she finished with a game-high 24 points, making 11-of-19 field goals, with a 3-pointer and a free throw.
  • Ciara Rosten and Jontay Walton scored 17 points apiece. Rosten registered her 16th double-double with 11 rebounds, and added five assists. Walton not only scored 17 points but had six assists and three steals.
  • Eliza Oswalt was the lone player in double figures for Mercyhurst with 17 points.
  • Edinboro shot 41.3 percent from the floor (31-of-75) while making 6-of-19 3-pointers and 13-of-20 free throws. Mercyhurst was held to 36.9 percent (24-of-65), including 5-of-17 three's, and went 10-of-15 at the line.
Head Coach: Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) -- 12-5, 1st year
  • Callie Wheeler was officially named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. That includes a string of eight straight 20-win seasons, including last year when the Fighting Scots ended the season with a 27-4 record. Edinboro won its fourth PSAC Championship in her 11 years and went on to reach the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional semifinals. It marked the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in her tenure as assistant coach, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2013-14.
  • Any doubts of Wheeler's ability to take over as head coach were alleviated when Wheeler filled in for a pair of games in late January last year. With Swank away from the team for his father's funeral, Wheeler guided the Fighting Scots to a 74-52 win at Slippery Rock, followed by a 73-54 victory over a Mercyhurst team, which had defeated California (Pa.) in its previous game.
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006.
  • The 5'5" guard finished as Edinboro's second-leading scorer at 12.5 ppg. as a senior, and also added 5.1 rpg. More importantly, she set a school record with 249 assists while turning the ball over just 89 times. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • Edinboro had had just one triple-double in its history prior to 2005-06 when Wheeler accomplished the fete twice. The first came against Seton Hill (20 points, 11 rebounds, 14 assists), followed by 29 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in her final home appearance vs. Shippensburg.
  • As a junior, Wheeler earned second-team All-PSAC West accolades, after averaging 10.4 ppg. and handing out 225 assists, along with recording 91 steals. The assists rank third all-time. She led the Fighting Scots to a 21-10 record that season, along with the team's first berth in the NCAA Division II Playoffs since 1998.
  • Wheeler likely ranks at the top in a long line of standout point guards at Edinboro. While not taking over as the starter until her junior season, she concluded her career with 682 assists, despite missing the final seven games of the 2003-04 campaign due to an injury. That figure is second all-time in the PSAC. In addition, Wheeler finished with 283 career steals, a figure which ranks fourth all-time at Edinboro. She fell just shy of reaching 1,000 points for her career, finishing with 932.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.

Michaela Barnes led the Scots with 25 points, while Jontay Walton (13 points, career-high 10 rebounds) and Bridgette Shaffer (11 points, career-high 12 rebounds) contributed double-doubles. Ciara Rosten fell just shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine boards, adding six blocks, while Michelle Jahn totaled 17 points, making 4-of-7 3-pointers.
  • Michaela Barnes is looking to become the fourth player on the 2018-19 team, and third this year to score 1,000 career points at Edinboro. The junior guard enters Wednesday's game with 988 career points. A second-team All-PSAC West selection and the PSAC Tournament MVP a year ago, she leads the team and ranks fifth in the PSAC in scoring at 18.5 ppg. In addition, Walton and Rosten became the ninth duo reach 1,000 points at Edinboro in the same season. Furthermore, Edinboro will feature four 1,000+ point scorers at the same time for the first time in school history.

A first-team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, the graduate student leads the league in free throw shooting percentage at 86.0 pct. (92-of-107), is tied for third in steals (46), ranks fourth in assists per game (4.4), and is sixth in three-point field goal percentage with a 37.1 percent clip (36-of-97). Walton has scored in double figures in all 17 games this season, including Edinboro's last 33 games dating back to last season.

She also stands 13th in career rebounds (683) and second in career blocked shots (203). The reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Year and Defensive Athlete of the Year is tied with Jahn in points per game with 12.8 ppg. and is collecting a team-high 8.1 rpg., which is sixth-best in the PSAC. The 6'2" forward ranks second in the PSAC in blocks per game (2.5) and in total blocks (35).
  • Bridgette Shaffer has collected +5.0 rpg. in 14 of 17 games this season. The 5'8" redshirt junior is averaging 8.8 ppg. and is the team's second-leading rebounder per game with 7.3 rpg.
Scouting the Lakers
  • Mercyhurst has battled injuries throughout the year, leading to a reduced roster, but the Lakers come in with an 8-11 overall record and 5-7 mark in the division after putting a major scare into California(Pa.) on Saturday. Mercyhurst would fall to the Vulcans, 62-56. The Lakers led 35-31 at the half, and the two teams were tied at 52-52 with just over four minutes to play.
  • Head coach Deanna Richard is in her 12th season at Mercyhurst, showing a 143-191 record. Richard previously spent six seasons as the head coach at Olivet, and has a career record of 196-283 in her 18th season as a head coach. In 2016-17, she led Mercyhurst to its best record in over 20 years at 24-8.
  • Three double-figure scorers remain on the team, led by Nicolette Newman at 11.6 ppg.
