Fighting Scots Face Important Weekend, Hosting Clarion and Slippery Rock

AROUND THE PSAC

MATCH STORYLINES
  • Edinboro will hold its annual Cancer Awareness Weekend. The team's players have already raised over $1,600 through donations and will be accepting donations both days. All proceeds will be donated to the Roswell Park Alliance Cancer Foundation in Buffalo, N.Y.
  • Edinboro is looking to right itself after losing four of five matches. Lost in that stretch is that Edinboro has played four of the top teams in the PSAC in Gannon, Millersville, Shepherd and Shippensburg. Now the Fighting Scots look to get back in the PSAC playoff chase against Northwest Division foes Clarion and Slippery Rock on back-to-back days. Edinboro comes in with 10-10 overall record, including 4-5 in the PSAC Northwest.
  • Clarion is new to the Northwest Division in 2019 with the addition of Shepherd to the PSAC. The Golden Eagles come in with a 13-8 record and are 5-4 in the PSAC.They have won two of their last three matches. Slippery Rock is under the direction of long-time coach Laurie Lokash, who is in her 36th season as head coach. She ranks 22nd in Division II in career victories and is eighth among coaches in career wins. With a 7-14 record this year prior to a match at Gannon on Friday, Lokash has a PSAC-record 643 career wins. SRU is looking to snap a seven-match losing streak.      
  • Junior Cierah Jackson is just three kills shy of becoming the 14th player with 1,000 career kills. The 5'8" outside hitter comes in with 997 kills after totaling 14 at Shepherd and 8 more at Shippensburg. She has led Edinboro in kills in 15 of the 20 matches, and has been in double figures in 18 of 20. She leads Edinboro with 254 kills. Jackson was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Javelina Volleyball Invitational. She has earned second team All-PSAC honors while leading the Fighting Scots in kills each of her first two seasons. Jackson was named the PSAC Northwest Division Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the Rebich Investments Invitational. 
  • Head coach Missy Soboleski is in her 15th year as Edinboro's head coach and holds the career record for victories with 325.  All told, she has compiled a 460-362 record while serving as a head coach for 24 years. She previously served as head coach at Mercyhurst and Gannon before taking over at Edinboro in 2005. She has led Edinboro to eight NCAA Division II playoff berths. Soboleski entered the season ranked 22nd in Division II among active coaches in victories, and is third among PSAC coaches.
  • Alicia Eldredge enjoyed an outstanding season as a freshman starting at setter. She finished with a team-leading 916 assists, which ranks 13th in a season Edinboro. She ranked tenth in the PSAC in assists per set (8.88) and service aces per set (0.38). She had 40-or-more assists in eight matches. Eldredge has 661 assists this season, along with 30 service aces, good for second on the team. Eldredge stands tenth in career assists with 1,577.  Molly Breier has a team-high 266 digs, including a season-high 23 at Shepherd, bringing her career total to 873. That is good for 20th all-time. Junior Paige Morris has played well, contributing 66 kills and 46 blocks, the latter figure ranking second on the team. Jessica Giannoccaro adds 132 digs.
  • A pair of freshmen have played a key role for the Fighting Scots this season.  Bella Burrelli, a 6'0" outside hitter/opposite, ranks second in both kills (209) and digs (178), along with a team-high 36 service aces. Erica Sharp, a 6'2", middle hitter/outside hitter, has added 130 kills and a team-high 56 blocks.

  • The Fighting Scots will face another local and PSAC Northwest rival, making the short trip to Erie to play at Mercyhurst on Tuesday, October 29. The match gets underway at 7:05 p.m.
