THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Edinboro leads 48-39-2
The Fighting Scots made it three straight and eight wins in the last nine meetings with Clarion with a 14-7 win at Memorial Stadium last year.    Clarion claimed a 36-23 win in 2015 at Sox Harrison Stadium, ending Edinboro's five-game winning streak in the series.  (NOTE: Edinboro and Clarion records indicate a difference in the all-time series. The difference lies in the 1961 game, won by Edinboro, 13-12. Clarion's results show that game was later forfeited.)

LAST YEAR'S GAME
Edinboro 14, Clarion 7
The Fighting Scots overcame a pair of early turnovers and rainy conditions to win for the ninth straight time at Clarion's Memorial Stadium. The recipe was plenty of Walter Fletcher and a staunch defense. The Fighting Scots would take a 7-0 lead late in the second quarter on a 33-yard TD?pass from Jarrod Kellar to Ta'Nauz Gregory.  Clarion came right back to knot the score at 7-7 just before halftime on a 10-yard run by Mylique McGriff. The score remained that way until midway through the fourth quarter, when Fletcher went coast-to-coast for an 80-yard TD run. The Boro defense then sacked Clarion QB Jeff Clemens three times in the final series. Edinboro had six sacks on the day and held Clarion to 228 total yards. Fletcher accounted for most of Edinboro's offense, rushing for 243 yards on 33 carries and catching 5 passes. Kellar completed 13-of-23 passes, but for just 94 yards. Gregory had 4 catches for 43 yards.  McGriff carried 28 times for 125 yards.

LAST WEEK
Edinboro 37, Seton Hill 10

Seton Hill would jump out to a 7-0 lead, but the Edinboro defense took control after that while Edinboro scored a season-high 37 points. The Fighting Scots held the Griffins to 279 total yards while forcing five turnovers and sacking Seton Hill quarterbacks four times. Edinboro scored 17 points in the second quarter on a one-yard run by CJ Reyes-Diggs, a 22-yard field goal by Vicente Arriagada, and a two-yard run by Levi Becker. A Seton Hill field goal midway through the third quarter pulled the Griffins to 17-10, but Edinboro ran off the final 20 points of the game. The defense put points on the board for the fourth time this year, as Aaron Rogers returned an interception 55 yards for six points.   Arriagada added field goals of 21 and 23 yards, and Reyes-Diggs wrapped up the win with a 16-yard TD?run.   Arriagada made three field goals for the third time in four weeks.  In his second career start, Becker completed 14-of-23 passes for 206 yards.

#9 Slippery Rock 41, Clarion 6
The Golden Eagles suffered their third straight loss, but battled ninth-ranked SRU for one half before The Rock pulled away in the second half. Clarion led 3-0 early in the game on a 30-yard field goal by James Metzgar, and trailed just 7-6 after another 30-yard field goal by Metzgar early in the second quarter. SRU would pull away after that, scoring the final 34 points. They scored 10 points in the second quarter to make it 17-6 at the half, then scored 24 points in the third period. Slippery Rock would finish with 483 yards in total offense compared to 167 for Clarion. The Golden Eagles were held to 72 yards rushing and turned ball over three times. Michael Proios came off the bench to complete 9-of-18 passes for 69 yards with an interception, while Scott Florence had 36 yards rushing on 13 carries.

THE COACHES
Wayne Bradford (Salisbury St. '90) was named Edinboro's 15th head coach on March 29, 2017 and led Edinboro to a 7-4 record in his first season. That was followed by a 6-5 finish a year ago, and as Bradford wraps up his third season, he shows a 15-15 record. The 13 wins entering the season were tied for the most by an Edinboro head coach in his first two seasons. After serving as interim head coach in 2017, that tag was removed less than a week after the conclusion of the season. With his tenth win as head coach coming against East Stroudsburg last year, Bradford is the fastest coach to reach 10 wins at Edinboro. Bradford has worked under four different head coaches and was an assistant at Edinboro for 18 years before taking over as the interim head coach. He has spent a majority of his time as the Fighting Scots' defensive coordinator, although in 2019 he will move over to the offensive side to oversee the offense. Bradford has master-minded some brilliant defensive performances over the years in a day and age when offense has taken over. For instance, in 2011 the Fighting Scots ranked eighth in Division II in scoring defense (17.0 ppg.), 11th in pass efficiency defense, and 18th in total defense (292.6 ypg.). Edinboro gave up fewer than 20 points in seven of its 11 games. Two years ago, his Edinboro defense finished first in the PSAC and fourth in Division II in tackles for losses, and second in the PSAC and sixth in the country in sacks. Edinboro finished the 2016 campaign with a 9-2 record, marking the fifth time an Edinboro team with Bradford on the staff tied the school record for victories (9). Three of Edinboro's teams during his tenure have reached the NCAA playoffs, including the 2009 team, which finished at 9-4 and reached the Super Region One semifinals. All told, he has been a part of 120 wins.

Chris Weibel (Clarion '98) is in his fifth year as the head coach at Clarion. He enjoyed a highly-successful first season, leading the Golden Eagles to a 7-4 finish after starting the year with seven straight wins. He brings in an overall record of 19-33 into the contest. Weibel had previously made a name for himself with the Golden Eagles. He served as an assistant coach at Clarion for 11 years, and before that was a standout quarterback.  Weibel holds Clarion records for career pass attempts (1,065), completions (586), passing yards (7,845) and passing TD's (65). He also owns the record for single season passing yards (2,880 – 1996) and TD passes (32 – 1996).  His top season came in 1996 when he led the Golden Eagles to an 11-3 overall record, the PSAC West title, the NCAA Division II East Region crown, and a berth in the NCAA "Final Four" before losing in the final seconds to Northern Colorado, 19-18. Weibel earned All-American honors and Clarion was awarded the Lambert Cup, signifying the top team in the East. After serving as an assistant coach for the Golden Eagles for over 10 years, Weibel was named Clarion's 12th head football coach on February 6, 2015. He is a 2010 inductee into Clarion's Sports Hall of Fame.

THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro hosts Clarion in its last home game of the 2019 season. Edinboro will bid farewell to 11 seniors prior to the game as the Fighting Scots celebrate Senior Day.  The Fighting Scots improved to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC West with a 37-10 win at Seton Hill last Saturday.  It marked the second straight game that Edinboro scored 30-or-more points.
  • Clarion comes in with a 3-5 record and is 1-4 in the PSAC West. The Golden Eagles dropped a 41-6 decision to ninth-ranked Slippery Rock one week after SRU defeated Edinboro, 41-30.  Clarion got off to a fast start with back-to-back wins over Shippensburg and Lock Haven, scoring 48 points in each game, but has since lost five of six games, including the last three. However, they have had to run the gauntlet of the top three teams in the PSAC West, losing in order to Cal U, Indiana(Pa.), and Slippery Rock.
  • Edinboro's first eight opponents have a combined record of 34-23.  Slippery Rock is undefeated at 8-0 and ranked tenth in the latest AFCA Division II Top 25, while Grand Valley State is 7-1 and ranked 16th.  Cal U is 6-2. Still waiting for the Fighting Scots are 19th-ranked IUP (7-1), and possibly 17th-ranked Kutztown (8-0) in the coming weeks.
  • Edinboro had a pair of players recognized by the PSAC following the win at Seton Hill. Aaron Rogers was selected the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week while spearheading an outstanding defensive effort, and placekicker Vicente Arriagada was named the PSAC West Special Teams Athlete of the Week for the second time. Arriagada has a big hand in both of Edinbioro's wins. The redshirt freshman kicked the game-winning field goal in the 18-17 win at Gannon, and for the third time in four weeks made three field goals vs. Seton Hill.  Strong safety Brandon Anderson was named the PSACWest Defensive Athlete of the Week following the Gannon game.
  • Edinboro bids farewell to 11 seniors on Saturday as they play their final home game at Sox Harrison Stadium. The list of seniors includes: Brandon Anderson (SS, Willingboro, N.J.) Kyle Carrington(WR, Toms River, N.J.) Andre Dowdell Jr.(WR, Syracuse, N.Y.) Ta'Nauz Gregory (WR, Erie, Pa.) Vincent Hudson (DE, Northfield, Ohio) Alvin Lara (RB, Allentown, Pa.) Marquese Moore (CB, Aliquippa, Pa.) Aaron Rogers (CB, Burlington, N.J.) Luke Rowlands (LS, Gibsonia, Pa.) Maurice Sims (CB, Monaca, Pa.) Myles Turner(DT, Harrisburg, Pa.)
  • Injuries have decimated Edinboro this year. No fewer than ten different starters have missed games due to injuries. Most notable, starting quarterback Andrew Tomko has played in just three games and has missed the last four contests. His backup, Jordan Castelli, has also started three games, but went down with an injury, as well. Third-string quarterback Levi Becker saw his first extended action against Mercyhurst, and has started the last two games. The secondary was considered Edinboro's strength at the beginning of the year, and still is, but starters DeAndre' Dowdell and Bill DePaul have missed considerable time.
  • Ta'Nauz Gregory is wrapping up an outstanding career while leaving his name etched in the record books. The senior wide receiver now holds school records for career receptions (220) and career kickoff return yards (1,044). He stands second in career receiving yards (3,030), career receiving TDs (32), and career all-purpose yards (5,463). He needs 35 yards receiving to break that record, and is 3 TD receptions shy of the career touchdown receptions standard.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC?West Coaches Preseason Poll after finishing fourth in the division a year ago with a 3-4 ledger. Clarion was picked to finish seventh in the PSAC?West after going 4-7 a year ago.
  • Brandon Anderson is looking to become the first player since 1999 to lead Edinboro in tackles three straight years. The redshirt senior strong safety has a team-leading 74 tackles, and is poised to move into the top ten in career tackles. He has 327, just two shy of tenth place.
