Fighting Scots Double Up Lake Erie in Season Opener

Michaela Barnes (Lakeood, Ohio/Kenston) led four players in double figures with 18 points as the Edinboro women's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with an 87-42 win over Lake Erie at McComb Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. Lake Erie fell to 0-3 with the loss.

Ten players scored for the Fighting Scots, with Barnes making 7-of-13 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws for 18 points. She added five rebounds.

Three other players chipped in with 10 points apiece. After missing last season following knee surgery, Cheniya Sharpe (Springfield, Va./Trinity Christian) returned to contribute 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds, five of those on the offensive side. The redshirt senior made 5-of-6 field goals and had three steals.

Maggie Gilbert (Gloucestershire, England), a 6'3" junior who transferred from Southeastern added 10 points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots. She enjoyed a perfect shooting night, making 3-of-3 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws. Freshman Emma Elash (McKeepsort, Pa./McKeesport) matched Sharpe with 10 points and a team-high eight boards.

Two new newcomers scored nine points apiece, D'Rae Tullock (Middleton, Idaho) and Madison Amalia (Beaver falls, Pa./Blackhawk), with Tullock contributing six rebounds and Amalia a team-high four assists. After going scoreless and playing just four minutes in the first half, Bridgette Shaffer (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) drained three 3-pointers in the third quarter and also had nine points.  

The Fighting Scots never trailed in the contest after scoring the first six points of the game. They would lead 19-12 after one quarter, then pushed the lead to double digits early in the second quarter as Amalia hit a three for a 26-14 lead. The lead would never get under 13 points after that, as Edinboro went on a 15-0 run late in the period.

Freshman guard Rana Elhusseini (Dearborn, Mich./Fordson) scored all seven of her points in that run. Edinboro would lead 48-23 at the half thanks to a 29-11 advantage in the second quarter.

Edinboro outscored Lake Erie 21-115 in the third period as the lead grew to 69-38. The final score would be the largest deficit of the game for the Storm as Edinboro closed the game with nine straight points.

Edinboro shot 47.7 percent from the floor (31-of-65), including a sizzling 11-of-14 in the second quarter. The Scots made 10-of-24 3-pointers and went 15-of-19 from the line. Lake Erie was a cold 28.3 percent from the floor (15-of-53), making just 2-of-17 3-pointers. The Storm was 10-of-17 from the line. Edinboro also dominated the glass, 48-29, with 15 offensive boards. Edinboro was guilty of 17 turnovers, while Lake Erie turned the ball over 24 times.

The Fighting Scots do not play again until Wednesday, November 20 when they play at Daemen. They are then home for three more games as they start the season with four home games in the first five contests.
