Amalia Scores 17 Points in 64-57 Loss at Daemen

Box Score (New/Sortable Format) AMHERST, N.Y. – The Edinboro women's basketball team began a challenging weak with a 64-57 loss at Daemen on Wednesday night at Lumsden Gymnasium. The Fighting Scots are now 1-1 on the young season while Daemen won its fourth straight game to improve to 4-1.

The Fighting Scots were beginning a stretch of three games in five days. They will open PSAC play this weekend with a pair of crossover contests. First-year PSAC member Shepherd will play its first-ever PSAC game against Edinboro on Saturday, November 23 with a 1:00 p.m. tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse. The next day an old rival, Shippensburg, comes to town for another 1:00 p.m. contest.

Three Fighting Scots scored in double figures at Daemen. In her second game as a Fighting Scot, Madison Amalia led the way with 17 points, making 5-of-9 3-pointers.  Michaela Barnes added 15 points, going 6-of-7 at the line, along with five rebounds and five assists, while Bridgette Shaffer finished with 13 points. Cheniya Sharpe pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Barnes moved past former teammate Jontay Walton into 16th place in career scoring with 1,315 points.

Daemen featured four players in double digits. Caroline White had 18 points and eight rebounds, with Taira Filbert contributing 14 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Heinold had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Katie Titus also had 10 points.

Both teams struggled from the floor, with Edinboro at 31.3 percent (20-of-64) and Daemen at 35.4 percent (23-of-65). The Fighting Scots made 10-of-27 3-pointers while the Wildcats hit 7-of-24 shots from beyond the arc. Edinboro was 7-of-13 from the line and Daemen 11-of-16.
Daemen would win the rebound battle, 55-36, including 21 offensive rebounds, and the Wildcats held a 17-7 advantage in second chance points. Edinboro forced 18 Daemen turnovers while committing 15.

Edinboro grabbed an early 7-4 lead in the first quarter thanks to an Amalia 3-pointer and baskets by Barnes and Sharpe. The Wildcats would knot the score at 7-7 on a 3-pointer by Titus, and took the lead for good at 9-7 on a jumper by Tiara Filbert. That was part of a string of nine straight points by the Wildcats.

Daemen would lead 13-9 after one period, and the lead grew slightly to 28-23 at the half. The Scots tied the score at 15-15 on a 3-point play by Barnes at the 7:35 mark of the second quarter, and White and Barnes exchanged three's, followed by Heinold and Shaffer three's to make it 21-21. Daemen would score the next seven points, however.

The Wildcats would grab their largest lead of the night at 43-30 late in the third quarter, but Amalia hit a pair of 3-pointers to end the period and pull Edinboro to within 43-36.

Daemen would build its lead back to 10 at 54-44 midway through the final quarter, but Edinboro would make one last run. The Fighting Scots twice pulled to within six points, the last at 58-52 with 53 seconds left. Daemen would make 6-of-8 free throws in the final minute to hold off the Scots.
