THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro is in the midst of a demanding week, with three games in five days. The Fighting scots saw their record even at 1-1 with a 64-57 loss at Daemen on Wednesday night after opening the second season under head coach Callie Wheeler with an 87-42 win over Lake Erie on November 12. The Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll, while Shepherd was picked eighth in the Eastern Division and Shippensburg third. Shepherd is in its first year as a member of the PSAC after previously playing in the Mountain East Conference. The Rams' game at Edinboro will represent their first PSAC contest. They come in with a 5-0 record. Like Edinbioro, Shippensburg is facing a tough stretch, playing three games in four days. The Raiders are 2-2 after dropping an 85-69 decision at Lincoln on Thursday. They play at Slippery Rock on Saturday before heading to Edinboro on Sunday.
  • Edinboro enters the 2019-20 campaign with high expectations. The Fighting Scots finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. The Fighting Scots are picked to finish third in the highly-competitive PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll, and are among Teams to Watch in the D2Bulletin Preseason Poll.
  • The Fighting Scots lost three 1,000-point scorers from last year's squad. Combined, the trio accounted for 3,880 points. But Wheeler does welcome back a pair of starters, including All-American Michaela Barnes. The 5'6" guard is also a 1,000-point scorer. She moved into 16th place in career scoring on Wednesday with 15 points, giving her 1,315 points. She is averaging 16.5 ppg. and 5.0 rpg. The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II. She scored 609 points, the fourth-highest season total. Barnes led the PSAC in free throw percentage (85.7 percent) and was fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (52.1 pct.).
  • Bridgette Shaffer started 24 games a year ago, averaging 7.8 ppg. and 6.6 rpg. The latter figure was second on the team. The 5'10" senior made 49-of-118 3-pointers. She is averaging 11.0 ppg. and has made 6-of-15 3-pointers in the first two games.
  • Edinboro welcomes back Cheniya Sharpe after the 5'11" redshirt senior sat out the 2018-19 season with an injury. When healthy, she is a ferocious rebounder, averaging 7.2 rpg. in 17 minutes in 2017-18. She returned with a bang, contributing 10 points and 8 rebounds vs. Lake Erie. She comes in at 6.0 ppg. and a team-leading 8.5 rpg.
  • Wheeler is excited about the prospect of seven newcomers, several of whom are expected to make immediate contributions. In the frontcourt, D'Rae Tullock is a 6'2" senior who last played at Arkansas Tech in 2016-17, averaging 5.4 ppg. and 3.0 rpg. in 25 contests. She's still rounding into form, currently averaging 6.5 ppg. and 4.5 rpg.
  • Madison Amalia joined the Fighting Scots a year ago in January after transferring from St. Thomas Aquinas. A 5'5" junior, she has quickly earned Wheeler's trust at point guard. She's come off a team-high 17-point effort at Daemen, making 5-of-9 3-pointers. After two games, she is averaging 13.0 ppg. and has made 8-of-16 3-pointers.
  • Following Sunday's Shippensburg game, Edinboro wraps up a three-game homestand with a game vs. Walsh on Wednesday, December 3. That will be the last home game for the Fighting Scots for over a month, when Edinboro hosts West Chester on January 6. In between, Edinboro plays five straight road contests.

HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 21-10, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.
  • Edinboro would post a pair of upsets over nationally-ranked California(Pa.), 99-92 at McComb Fieldhouse when the Vulcans were ranked 12th, and a month later by a 62-61 margin at Cal, when the Vulcans were ranked 17th. Edinboro would suffer a hard-fought 83-71 defeat to ninth-ranked Virginia State in the NCAA Atlantic regional.
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • Edinboro had had just one triple-double in its history prior to 2005-06 when Wheeler accomplished the fete twice. The first came against Seton Hill (20 points, 11 rebounds, 14 assists), followed by 29 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in her final home appearance vs. Shippensburg.
  • While not taking over as the starter until her junior season, Wheeler concluded her career with 682 assists, second all-time in the PSAC, and finished with 283 career steals, fourth all-time at Edinboro.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
SCOUTING SHEPHERD
  • Shepherd was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC East coaches' preseason poll after finishing 11-18 a year ago. But the Rams are off to a fast start at a perfect 5-0, with four of those contests at home. They last played on Wednesday night, defeating Frostburg State, 71-66. The Edinboro game marks the first PSAC game for Shepherd.  Head coach Jenna Eckleberry is in her sixth season.
  • The trio of Marley McLaughlin, Abby Beeman, and Sydney Clayton are combining for 51 ppg., as Shepherd comes in averaging 79.8 ppg. while allowing 71.2 ppg. McLaughlin, a 5'8" junior guard, is the leading scorer at 18.0 ppg. and has made 13-of-37 3-pointers. She had 17 in the win over Frostburg State.
  • Beeman is a 5'4" freshman averaging 17.8 ppg. with team-highs in assists (34) and steals (11). She is shooting 50.8 percent from the floor (32-of-63) and has made 10-of-28 3-pointers. Clayton adds 15.2 ppg. and a team-high 6.2 rpg. The 5'11" junior is shooting 53.4 percent from the floor (31-of-58) and has 10 blocked shots. She was a second team All-MEC choice last year after averaging 17.1 ppg. and 7.5 rpg.
SCOUTING SHIPPENSBURG
  • Shippensburg is 2-2 after suffering an 85-69 loss at Lincoln on Thursday. That began a stretch of three games in four days for the Raiders, who play at Slippery Rock on Saturday before heading to Edinboro. They opened the season with back-to-back wins over Wheeling and Frostburg State, but have now lost two in a row.
  • Kristy Trn is in her 21st season as head coach and has 343 career wins. She relies greatly on the talents of Ariel Jones, a 5'7" junior who set a Shippensburg record for points a year ago with 690. She averaged 25.6 ppg. and is off to a fast start, leading the Raiders in scoring in all four games. That includes a 32-point effort vs. Wheeling. Jones is averaging 23.8 ppg. and has been to the free throw line 43 times, making 34.
  • Destiny Jefferson is also in double figures at 14.8 ppg. The 5'6" junior was a first team All-PSAC East selection, as was Jones, last year. She adds 5.5 rpg. and 19 assists.
  • Aunbrielle Green, a 6'1" sophomore, is the top rebounder at 9.0 per game. She adds 8.8 ppg.
