THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro returns to eastern Pennsylvania for a pair of PSAC crossover contests, while also wrapping up the 2019 portion of its schedule. The Fighting Scots play at East Stroudsburg on Friday, then the next day are at PSAC East preseason favorite Kutztown. Edinboro snapped a two-game losing streak with a 109-49 win at Cheyney on December 8. After a break for final exams, they return to the court with a 3-4 overall record and are 1-2 in PSAC action while facing a demanding early schedule. East Stroudsburg owns a 5-4 record and is also 1-2 in league play. The Warriors had a three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday with an 82-77 overtime loss to 21st-ranked Adelphi. Kutztown is also off to a 5-4 start and is 2-1 in PSAC action. The Golden Bears have won three straight contests, all at home. They host Slippery Rock on Friday night before entertaining Edinboro the next evening.
  • The Fighting Scots are in the midst of five straight games on the road before returning home to face West Chester on January 6. Following this weekend's pair of games, Edinboro begins the New Year with a January 3 contest at Gannon. That is the start of a stretch of four games in nine days.
  • Edinboro finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. The Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the highly-competitive PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll.
  • The Fighting Scots lost three 1,000-point scorers from last year's squad. Combined, the trio accounted for 3,880 points. But Wheeler welcomed back a pair of starters, led by All-American Michaela Barnes. The 5'5" guard is not only another 1,000-point scorer, she is climbing fast in the career scoring charts. She has scored 30-or-more points in three straight games and is now eighth in career scoring with 1,442 points. She scored 31 points vs. Walsh and Millersville and 30 against Cheyney.  In the process, Barnes has boosted her scoring average to 22.9 ppg., good for second in the PSAC. She adds 4.9 rpg. and has made 45-of-57 free throws (78.9 pct.).  The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.  She scored an Edinboro-record 42 points in last year's 93-89 overtime win over East Stroudsburg.
  • Bridgette Shaffer started 24 games a year ago, averaging 7.8 ppg. and 6.6 rpg. The latter figure was second on the team. The 5'10" senior made 49-of-118 3-pointers. She has almost doubled her scoring average this year, coming in at 15.4 ppg. while making 26-of-59 3-pointers. She had her second double-double of the year and sixth of her career with 16 points and career-high 13 rebounds vs. Cheyney. She ranks sixth in the PSAC in rebounding at 7.6 per game.
  • Cheniya Sharpe has returned after sitting out the 2018-19 season with an injury. The 5'11" redshirt senior is a ferocious rebounder, as evidenced by her career-high 18 vs. Shepherd, with 13 offensive. Sharpe is averaging 6.7 ppg. and a team-high 9.7 rpg. after averaging 7.2 rpg. in 17 minutes in 2017-18. She is second in the PSAC in rebounding.

Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection.
