Fighting Scots Wrap Up Five-Game Road Trip, Start 2020 at Local Rival Gannon

  • The Edinboro-Gannon game can be heard on WFSE-FM 88.9, with Chase Rowland providing the commentary.
 
THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro opens up PSAC West action against a familiar local rival, as the Fighting Scots make the short journey up I-79 to play at Gannon. Both Edinboro and Gannon last played on December 21, and are playing for the first time in 2020. For Edinboro, the game will mark the end of a five-game road swing. Gannon, meanwhile, is undefeated at the Hammermill Center at 4-0.
  • This will be the first of two EUknighted 2020 games as Edinboro and Gannon collaborate to benefit the Pa. Soldiers' & Sailors' Home. The first meeting hosted by Gannon will include a Hoopy Hour from 4-7 p.m. at Molly Brannigan's, with proceeds benefiting the Pa. Soldiers' & Sailors' Home. A similar Hoopy hour will be held prior to the games at Edinboro on February 5, with the Edinboro Hotel hosting the event. For more details, click HERE    
  • Edinboro rallied for a 69-62 lead at Kutztown in its last contest, scoring the final 11 points of the game. That boosted Edinboro to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in PSAC action. Gannon ran its winning streak to three games with a 70-56 win at Bloomsburg, leaving the Lady Knights at 8-3 overall and 4-1 in league play. Edinboro was picked to finish third in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll, while Gannon was voted sixth.           
  • The Fighting Scots begin a very hectic stretch, with three games in six days and four in nine. After the Gannon game, Edinboro will return home for the first time since December 3, hosting West Chester on January 6. Two days later Edinboro hosts Pitt-Johnstown on January 8.
  • Edinboro comes in averaging 76.4 ppg., good for third in the PSAC, while allowing 67.6 ppg., which ranks tenth. Gannon averages 69.5 ppg. (10th) and allows 66.4 ppg. (7th).
  • Edinboro finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. The Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the highly-competitive PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll.   
  • The Fighting Scots lost three 1,000-point scorers from last year's squad. Combined, the trio accounted for 3,880 points. But Wheeler welcomed back a pair of starters, led by All-American Michaela Barnes. The 5'5" guard is not only another 1,000-point scorer, she has now climbed to seventh in the career scoring charts. She had a recent string of three straight games with 30-or-more points, and is now seventhth in career scoring with 1,482 points. She scored 31 points vs. Walsh and Millersville and 30 against Cheyney.  Barnes ranks second n the PSAC in scoring at 22.2 ppg. She adds 5.0 rpg. and has made 56-of-71 free throws (78.9 pct.).  The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • Bridgette Shaffer started 24 games a year ago, averaging 7.8 ppg. and 6.6 rpg. The latter figure was second on the team. The 5'10" senior made 49-of-118 3-pointers. She has almost doubled her scoring average this year, coming in at 14.7 ppg. while making 32-of-69 3-pointers. She leads the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.6) and is third in 3-point field goal percentage (46.4 pct.). She had her second double-double of the year and sixth of her career with 16 points and career-high 13 rebounds vs. Cheyney.
  • Cheniya Sharpe has returned after sitting out the 2018-19 season with an injury. The 5'11" redshirt senior is Edinboro's top rebounder at 8.3 per game, good for third in the PSAC. She pulled down a career-high 18 vs. Shepherd, with 13 offensive. Sharpe is averaging 6.1 ppg.
  • Madison Amalia started the first four games at point guard, averaging 8.8 ppg. But the junior has missed the last five games with an injury, with 5'3" freshman Rana Elhusseini taking over at the point. She is averaging 8.8 ppg. and has a team-high 29 assists.
  • Another freshman, Bella Burrelli, has provided the Fighting Scots a boost of late. The 6'0" forward did not join the team until late in November after starring for the volleyball team. She is averaging 8.4 ppg. and 4.6 rpg. while playing just under 20 minutes in five games.

THE LAST MEETING – March 4, 2019 – Gannon 71, Edinboro 67 at McComb Fieldhouse
  • Edinboro's rally came up just short in  the PSAC Tournament first round game. Trailing 62-46 with 7:37 left to play, the Fighting Scots ran off 11 consecutive points to pull to within 62-57 with 5:38 remaining. Sixth-seed Gannon boosted the deficit back up to nine points at 66-57, but the Fighting Scots again closed to five at 69-64. Unfortunately, just 53 seconds remained, and the Lady Knights made a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left. Michaela Barnes hit a three with 3.6 seconds remaining to pull the Scots to within four points. Barnes registered her eighth straight game with 20-or-more points, ending the night with 29. Jontay Walton added 10 points, seven assists and five steals.  Gannon showcased three players in double figures, led by Sydney Mitchell with 20 points. Boston McKinney came off the bench to add 15 points, while Chelsea Rourke had 14.
HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 24-14, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.   
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
SCOUTING GANNON
  • Gannon is under the direction of Cleve Wright, who is in his second stint with the Lady Knights. He coached Gannon from xxx and has a record 241-103 at Gannon, the school's all-time winningest coach. He spent the last six years at the Division I level, including four seasons as the head coach at Miami(Oh.). Two starters returned from last year's 14-17 squad, led by Chelsea Rourke. A 5'10" senior, Rourke is averaging 11.8 ppg., had made 16-of-42 3-pointers while leading the team with 13 blocked shots and shooting 51.2 percent from the floor. Junior guard Sydney Mitchell is the other returning starter. She averages 7.6 ppg. with a team-high 39 assists. Gannon's leading scorer and rebounder is Tori Obenrader. A 5'11" sophomore who was the PSAC West Freshman of the Year last season, Obenrader is averaging 17.5 ppg. and 8.0 rpg. She has led the team in scoring nine times and has been the top rebounder ten times. She is fourth in the PSAC in rebounding.
