THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro heads to southeastern Pennsylvania for a pair of contests this weekend. The Fighting Scots play a PSAC crossover contest at Millersville on Saturday, then face former PSAC foe Cheyney the next day. Edinboro comes in with a 2-3 record following a 79-72 loss to Walsh on Tuesday. The contest pitted a pair of NCAA playoff teams from a year ago, and featured 21 lead changes and eight ties before Walsh took the lead in the final three minutes. Millersville is off to a 1-4 start and is 0-2 in PSAC action. Cheyney has a 1-6 record while playing an independent schedule.
  • The Walsh game was the final home game for Edinboro in 2019. The Fighting Scots now begin a stretch of five straight games on the road before returning home to face West Chester on January 6. Following this weekend's pair of games, Edinboro will break for finals before heading back east again for games at East Stroudsburg and Kutztown on December 20 and 21.
  • Despite the slow start against a very strong schedule, expectations are high for Edinboro. The Fighting Scots finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. The Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the highly-competitive PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll..
  • The Fighting Scots lost three 1,000-point scorers from last year's squad. Combined, the trio accounted for 3,880 points. But Wheeler welcomed back a pair of starters, led by All-American Michaela Barnes. The 5'6" guard is also a 1,000-point scorer. She comes off a season-high 31-point effort vs. Walsh to move into 12th place in career scoring with 1,381 points. She is averaging 19.6 ppg. and 4.2 rpg. along with a team-high 14 assists. The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II. She scored 609 points, the fourth-highest season total. Barnes led the PSAC in free throw percentage (85.7 percent) and was fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (52.1 pct.).
  • Bridgette Shaffer started 24 games a year ago, averaging 7.8 ppg. and 6.6 rpg. The latter figure was second on the team. The 5'10" senior made 49-of-118 3-pointers. She is averaging 13.8 ppg. and has made 17-of-38 3-pointers. She had her first double-double of the year and fifth of her career with 18 points and 11 rebounds vs. Shippensburg.
  • Cheniya Sharpe returns after sitting out the 2018-19 season with an injury. The 5'11" redshirt senior is a ferocious rebounder, as evidenced by her career-high 18 vs. Shepherd, with 13 offensive. Sharpe is averaging 5.4 ppg. and a team-high 10.0 rpg. after averaging 7.2 rpg. in 17 minutes in 2017-18.
  • Wheeler has used four different starting lineups in the first five games. Against Walsh, Madison Amalia was out with an injury after starting the first five games at point guard, with freshman Rana Elhusseini making her first career start. Both guards are averaging 8.8 ppg. Amalia had made 9-of-23 3-pointers, while Elhusseini is 18-of-20 from the line.

  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
