Edinboro to Host Mercyhurst in Showdown for PSAC Regular Season Title

EDINBORO, Pa. – With a favorable weather forecast, the Edinboro men's tennis team will host Mercyhurst on Monday, April 22 in a showdown for the PSAC regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming PSAC Tournament. The match gets underway at 1 p.m. It was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 20 but poor weather conditions forced its postponement.

Edinboro has a 14-4 record and is ranked third in the ITA Atlantic Region rankings. Mercyhurst owns a 13-2 record and is first in the Atlantic Region. Both teams own 4-0 records in the PSAC. A year ago, the Lakers snapped Edinboro's string of three straight regular season crowns. They would go on to win their second straight PSAC championship. Edinboro won the previous three PSAC titles in 2014-16, and finished second in 2013.

The Fighting Scots of second-year head coach Kody Duncan feature an experienced yet youthful lineup, with three seniors and three freshmen. Seniors Mateus Santos, Mauricio Santos, and Kevin Mboku have been key performers for Edinboro for several years. Mateus Santos has a 12-15 record while playing number one singles, while Mauricio Santos lines up at number two and has a 19-6 record. Mboku comes in with a 14-6 ledger at number five singles.

Duncan balanced the veterans with three freshmen. Nils Plutat is 15-2 at number three singles, Tommy Hsu is 11-6 while playing number four singles, and Julius Schulte ia 11-8 at six singles.

Mercyhurst is led by Cormac McCooey, who won the PSAC singles championship this fall. He defeated Mateus Santos 6-3, 6-3 in the finals. McCooey plays number one singles and has a 17-4 record. He teamed with Amilleta Gonzalez to win the PSAC doubles title in the fall. The duo is 18-5 in doubles play, with Gonzalez showing an 18-4 singles record while playing number three singles.

The PSAC Team Championships are scheduled for Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 at Bloomsburg.
