THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro posted its third straight win with a 73-72 upset at 15th-ranked Cal U on Saturday. Now the Fighting Scots face back-to-back ranked teams as they host an Indiana(Pa.) squad that won its 12th straight game on Saturday with a 62-48 win at Gannon. Edinboro is now 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the PSAC West, while IUP comes in at 14-1 and 9-0, respectively, and has climbed to eighth in the latest WBCA Division II Top 25.
  • The Fighting Scots continued their mastery over Cal on Saturday thanks to a fourth quarter rally. Trailing 57-49, Edinboro outscored the Vulcans, 24-15, over the final ten minutes. Michaela Barnes keyed the comeback, scoring 14 of her game-high 35 points as Edinboro defeated Cal for the fifth straight time, the last three under head coach Callie Wheeler when Cal was nationally-ranked.
  • Now the Fighting Scots look to exorcise some demons and defeat IUP. The Crimson Hawks have won 11 of the last 12 meetings between the two. Edinboro, Cal and IUP have jockeyed for the top spot in the PSAC over the last decade.
  • Edinboro is averaging 74.5 ppg., good for fifth in the PSAC, while allowing 67.2 ppg., which ranks eighth. IUP averages 71.8 ppg., seventh in the conference, and allows 51.5 ppg. The latter figure not only leads the PSAC but ranks sixth nationally. The Crimson Hawks have allowed more than 61 points just twice this year.
  • Edinboro finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
  • One of the key ingredients in Edinboro's three-game winning streak is dominance on the glass. The Fighting Scots held a 47-25 edge in rebounds in an 86-55 win over Pitt-Johnstown last Wednesday. On Saturday, Edinboro outrebounded Cal, 44-25.  Now they face an IUP team that leads the PSAC and ranks ninth in Division II in rebounding margin at +11.4. Edinboro is fifth in the PSAC in rebound margin at +4.2.
  • Michaela Barnes was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week for her performances against Pitt-Johnstown and Cal. The 5'5" guard scored a team-high 24 points in the win over UPJ, and followed that up with a season-high 35-point effort at Cal. She made 14-of-19 field goals, including her lone 3-point attempt, and was 6-of-7 at the line. Barnes has climbed to fifth in the career scoring charts with 1,582 points and has scored 30-or-more points four times this year and seven in her career. She had a recent string of three straight games with 30-or-more points, scoring 31 points vs. Walsh and Millersville and 30 against Cheyney.
  • Barnes ranks second in the PSAC and third in Division II in scoring at 23.1 ppg., adding 5.2 rpg., and has made 75-of-95 free throws (78.9 pct.).  The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • While Barnes is pilling up big scoring numbers, she is receiving plenty of support. Redshirt senior Bridgette Shaffer has nearly doubled her scoring average from a year ago after averaging 7.8 ppg., along with 6.6 rpg. The latter figure was second on the team. She is second in both scoring (14.1 ppg.) and rebounding 7.1 rpg., ranking 11th in the PSAC in the latter category. The 5'10" senior has made 43-of-99 3-pointers. She ranks second in the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.3) and 3-point field goal percentage (43.4 pct.).  She had made at least three 3-pointers in the first 11 games and has made at least one in all 13 games. A year ago, she made 49-of-118 3-pointers.
  • Cheniya Sharpe snapped out of a bit of a lull in impressive fashion against UPJ. The 5'11" redshirt senior had scored just nine points in the previous four games, but she scored a career-high 19 points vs. Pitt-Johnstown, adding 12 rebounds for her second double-double. She made it back-to-back double-doubles on Saturday with 10 points and 13 boards at Cal. Sharpe is averaging 6.5 ppg. and a team-high 8.3 rpg., the latter figure second in the PSAC. She pulled down a career-high 18 vs. Shepherd, with 13 offensive. She is shooting 53.1 percent from the floor. Sharpe sat out the 2018-19 season with an injury.
  • Madison Amalia provided a huge boost against West Chester, scoring a career-high 19 points. The junior guard started the first four games at point guard, but missed the next five games with an injury. She returned against Gannon, and made 5-of-10 three's vs. West Chester. She is averaging 8.4 ppg.  Diminutive freshman Rana Elhusseini has taken over at the point. She is averaging 7.2 ppg. and has a team-high 46 assists.

HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 27-15, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
SCOUTING INDIANA(PA)
  • IUP has run off 12 straight wins since suffering an 86-79 loss to Glenville State. The Crimson Hawks improved to 14-1 overall and 9-0 in the PSAC West with a 62-48 win at Gannon on Saturday. They have moved up to eighth in the latest WBCA Division II Top 25. IUP has enjoyed great success under the direction of head coach Tom McConnell, who is in his sixth season at the helm. He owns a 132-35 record at IUP. They come off back-to-back Atlantic Region championships. Two starters return from last year's 30-4 squad, but the Crimson Hawks quickly reloaded while featuring a stingy defense. They rank first in the PSAC and sixth in Division II in scoring defense at 51.5 ppg., allowing more than 61 points just twice. IUP features three double-figure scorers, led by Justina Mascaro at 15.3 ppg. A 5'11" guard, the transfer is a transfer from Delaware. She adds 4.5 rpg. and is shooting 53.3 percent from the floor. Returning starters Natalie Myers and Lexie Griggs average 13.2 and 12.4 ppg., respectively. Myers is a 6'0" senior guard who leads the team in rebounding (7.2 rpg.) and has a team-leading 38 3-pointers in 72 attempts (52.8 pct.). Griggs, a 5'10" senior forward, is shooting 56.4 pct. from the floor. Myers leads Division II in 3-point shooting and Griggs paces the PSAC in field goal percentage.
