THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro not only survived back-to-back games against nationally-ranked opponents, but prospered. The Fighting Scots upset 15th-ranked Cal last Saturday, 73-72, and on Wednesday nearly rallied for a win over eighth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) before falling, 66-63. That leaves the Fighting Scots with a deceiving 7-7 overall record and 5-5 in the PSAC West. The loss to IUP snapped a three-game winning streak. Clarion comes in with a 3-13 record and is 1-9 in PSAC action. The Golden Eagles have lost four games in a row, including a 75-55 loss to Gannon on Wednesday.
  • The Fighting Scots came all the way back from a 15-point deficit against IUP to take a 58-54 lead with four minutes remaining. Four free throws by the Crimson Hawks in the last 25 seconds ultimately did in the Fighting Scots, but a harassing defense forced IUP into numerous turnovers and fueled the comeback. There was also the incredible shooting display turned in by Bridgette Shaffer. Edinboro trailed 39-24 with just over six minutes left in the third quarter. They would climb to within 46-37 after three quarters, forcing seven turnovers. After going scoreless in the first half and having five points after three periods, Shaffer caught fire from beyond the arc, eventually giving Edinboro a 58-54 lead with four minutes remaining. The redshirt senior made six 3-pointers in the span of seven minute. That, plus six more turnovers in the fourth quarter, almost led to a second straight upset.
  • Shaffer would finish the night with a career-high 25 points, and also made a career-high 7 3-pointers in 12 attempts. She scored 20 of Edinboro's 26 points in the fourth quarter.  She has nearly doubled her scoring average from a year ago after averaging 7.8 ppg., along with 6.6 rpg. The latter figure was second on the team. She is second in both scoring (14.9 ppg.) and rebounding 6.9 rpg. The 5'10" senior has made 50-of-111 3-pointers. She leads the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.6) and is second in 3-point field goal percentage (45.0 pct.).  She had made at least three 3-pointers in the first 11 games and has made at least one in all 14 games. A year ago, she made 49-of-118 3-pointers.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish third in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. The Fighting Scots are averaging 73.7 ppg., good for fifth in the PSAC, while allowing 671 ppg., which ranks eighth. Clarion averages 58.9 ppg., 17th in the conference, and allows 69.4 ppg., which is 13th. The Golden Eagles were picked ninth in the Western Division in the preseason poll.
  • Earlier this week, Michaela Barnes was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week for her performances against Pitt-Johnstown and Cal. The 5'5" guard scored a team-high 24 points in the win over UPJ, and followed that up with a season-high 35-point effort at Cal. Including her 17-point effort vs. IUP, Barnes has climbed to fifth in the career scoring charts with 1,599 points and has scored 30-or-more points four times this year and seven in her career. She had a recent string of three straight games with 30-or-more points, scoring 31 points vs. Walsh and Millersville and 30 against Cheyney.
  • Barnes ranks second in the PSAC and tied for fourth in Division II in scoring at 22.6 ppg., adding 5.2 rpg., and has made 79-of-101 free throws (78.2 pct.).  The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • Cheniya Sharpe joined Barnes as a PSAC honoree earlier this week. She was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week after rfecording back-to-back doubleheaders. The 5'11" redshirt senior scored a career-high 19 points vs. Pitt-Johnstown, adding 12 rebounds, then contributed 10 points and 13 boards at Cal. She led Edinboro with nine rebounds vs. IUP. Sharpe is averaging 6.6 ppg. and a team-high 8.4 rpg., the latter figure third in the PSAC. She pulled down a career-high 18 vs. Shepherd, with 13 offensive. She is shooting 54.4 percent from the floor. Sharpe sat out the 2018-19 season with an injury.
  • Madison Amalia and Rana Elhusseini are sharing time with Barnes in the backcourt. Amalia, a junior, started the first four games at point guard, but missed the next five games with an injury. She is averaging 7.6 ppg.  Diminutive freshman Elhusseini has taken over at the point. She is averaging 7.1 ppg. and has a team-high 49 assists.
  • Monica Brown was the unsung hero vs. IUP. The 5'8" sophomore keyed an inspired defensive effort in the second half. She spearheaded the pressing defense that keyed Edinboro's comeback, forcing IUP into turnover after turnover. The Crimson Hawks finished the night with 25 turnovers, with Brown registering four steals.
  • Edinboro finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
