THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro has won four of five games to improve to 8-7 overall and 6-5 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots are wrapping up a three-game homestand. Edinboro has won the last five meetings with Seton Hill and 20 of 21 overall, but the series has been spirited of late with Seton Hill making great improvement. Seton Hill comes in with a 12-4 record and is a game ahead of Edinboro in the Western Division standings at 7-4. After running off five straight wins, the Griffins have lost three of their last four games, including an 89-82 loss to Shippensburg on Sunday.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish third in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. The Fighting Scots are averaging 73.0 ppg., good for fifth in the PSAC, while allowing 65.7 ppg., which ranks seventh. Seton Hill is the top scoring team in the PSAC at 81.4 ppg., six points more than the next team.  They have scored 80-or-more points in ten games this season. The Griffins allow 74.1 ppg., which ranks 16th in the conference.  Seton Hill was picked to finish fifth in the Western Division in the preseason poll after posting a 19-11 record a year ago.
  • Michaela Barnes continues her impressive play. The 5'5" guard was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week a week ago after scoring a team-high 24 points in a win over Pitt-Johnstown, followed by a season-high 35-point effort at Cal as the Fighting Scots upset the 15th-ranked Vulcans. On Friday night, she accounted almost half of Edinboro's points with 30 points in the 63-60 win over Clarion. It was her fifth 30-point game of the season and the eighth of her career. She is averaging 23.1 ppg., ranking second in the PSAC and third in Division II. She stands fifth in career scoring with 1,629 points. She adds 5.1 rpg. and has made 89-of-111 free throws. The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • Bridgette Shaffer comes in as Edinboro's second-leading scorer (14.1 ppg.) and rebounder (7.1 rpg.). Her contributions were never more evident than the last two games.  She recorded an incredible shooting display against IUP. After being held scoreless in the first half, she made seven 3-pointers in the second half, six in a span of seven minutes in the fourth period, and would end the night with a career-high 25 points. She scored 20 of Edinboro's 26 points in the fourth quarter. Against Clarion, she would make one 3-pointer and has now made at least one in every game this season. But her true value came on the boards, as she pulled down 11 rebounds. The 5'10" senior has made 51-of-117 3-pointers. She leads the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.4) and is second in 3-point field goal percentage (43.6 pct.). A year ago, she made 49-of-118 3-pointers.
  • Cheniya Sharpe joined Barnes as a PSAC honoree last week. She was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week. The 5'11" redshirt senior finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds in Friday's win over Clarion, her third double-double in the last four games. Sharpe is averaging 7.1 ppg. and a team-high 8.7 rpg., the latter figure third in the PSAC. She pulled down a career-high 18 vs. Shepherd, with 13 offensive. She is shooting 51.9 percent from the floor. Sharpe sat out the 2018-19 season with an injury.
  • Madison Amalia and Rana Elhusseini are sharing time with Barnes in the backcourt. Amalia, a junior, started the first four games at point guard, but missed the next five games with an injury. She is averaging 7.4 ppg. and has made 17-of-59 3-pointers.  Diminutive freshman Elhusseini has taken over at the point. She is averaging 6.8 ppg. and has a team-high 49 assists.
  • Monica Brown has started the last 12 games and played a key role defensively. The 5'8" sophomore spearheaded a pressing defense against Indiana(Pa.) that keyed Edinboro's comeback, forcing IUP into turnover after turnover. The Crimson Hawks finished the night with 25 turnovers, with Brown registering four steals. She is averaging 5.1 ppg. and has a team-high 29 steals.
  • Edinboro finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.??????

HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 28-16, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
