Edinboro Looks to Extend Winning Streak to Three Games, Travelling to Slippery Rock on Saturday

THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro improved to 9-7 overall and 7-5 in the PSAC West with an impressive 90-71 win over Seton Hill on Wednesday. The Fighting Scots have now won five of their last six games, with the lone loss a three-point decision to eighth-ranked Indiana(Pa.). The stretch also includes a 73-72 win at then 15th-ranked California(Pa.). Slippery Rock has won two of its last five games to move to 5-13 overall and 3-9 in the PSAC West. The Rock claimed a 69-64 win at Mercyhurst on Wednesday.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. They are averaging 74.1 ppg., good for fifth in the PSAC, while allowing 66.1 ppg., which ranks seventh. Slippery Rock comes in at 66.1 ppg., 12th in the PSAC, while allowing 76.3 ppg., which is 17th in the PSAC. SRU was seventh in the preseason poll.
  • Edinboro is receiving contributions from a variety of players. Michaela Barnes continues her impressive play. The 5'5" guard ranks second in the PSAC and third in Division II in scoring at 23.4 ppg. She has scored 30-or-more points five times this season and eight times in her career. With 27 points in Wednesday's win over Seton Hill, Barnes moved in to fourth place in career scoring with 1,656 points. She adds 5.2 rpg., ranks second on the team with 50 assists, and has made 95-of-117 free throws (81.2 pct.). The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • Saturday's game will feature a pair of the top scorers in the PSAC and all-time scorers at their respective schools. While Barnes ranks second in the PSAC in scoring and fourth in all-time scoring at Edinboro, Slippery Rock's Brooke Hinderliter is fifth in the PSAC in scoring aqt 19.8 ppg., and ranks third in all-time scoring at SRU with 1,558 points.
  • Bridgette Shaffer comes in as Edinboro's second-leading scorer (13.9 ppg.) and rebounder (6.8 rpg.). The 5'10" senior has made 53-of-122 3-pointers. She leads the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.3) and is second in 3-point field goal percentage (43.4 pct.). A year ago, she made 49-of-118 3-pointers. Shaffer posted a career-high 25 points against Indiana(Pa.) recently, making seven 3-pointers. She has made at least one 3-pointer in every game this year and 18 straight games dating back to last year.
  • Cheniya Sharpe has had double-doubles in four of the last five games. The 5'11" redshirt senior finished with 13 points and 16 rebounds vs. Seton Hill to boost her season averages to 7.4 ppg. and 9.1 rpg. She is second in the conference in rebounding. Over the last five games, she is averaging 12.6 ppg. and 12.6 rpg.           She is shooting 52.2 percent from the floor. Sharpe sat out the 2018-19 season with an injury.
  • Rana Elhusseini has started the last 12 games at point guard. The 5'3" freshman comes off the best game off her career vs. Seton Hill, scoring 26 points while making 5-of-7 3-pointers. She added five assists. Elhusseini is averaging 8.0 ppg. with a team-high 54 assists. She has made 17-of-53 3-pointers.
  • Madison Amalia, a junior, started the first four games at point guard, but missed the next five games with an injury. She is averaging 7.1 ppg. and has made 17-of-62 3-pointers. 
  • Monica Brown has started the last 13 games and plays a key role defensively. The 5'8" sophomore spearheaded a pressing defense against Indiana(Pa.) that keyed Edinboro's comeback, forcing IUP into turnover after turnover. The Crimson Hawks finished the night with 25 turnovers, with Brown registering four steals. She is averaging 5.1 ppg. and has a team-high 31 steals.
  • Bella Burrelli, a standout on the volleyball team, did not join the basketball team until after the volleyball campaign ended. A 6'0" freshman, she contributes 5.0 ppg. and 3.9 rpg, in 12 contests.
  • Edinboro finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.

  • Jontay Walton scored 25 points and Michaela Barnes added 24 to power Edinboro to an 88-77 win at Slippery Rock. The Fighting Scots have now won four straight games and 8 of their last 9 while improving to 18-6 overall and 13-5 in the PSAC West. Edinboro jumped out to a 28-13 lead after one quarter, then held off several Slippery Rock comeback attempts. SRU closed to within six points at 49-43 midway through the third quarter, but would build the lead back up to 69-55 as Barnes scored 13 points in the period. Walton scored 20 of her 25 points in the first, and did most of her damage from long distance, making 6-of-12 3-pointers. Barnes took over in the second half with 17 of her 24 markers. She went 12-of-14 at the line. Ciara Rosten added her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Michelle Jahn was the final Fighting Scot in double digits, coming off the bench to contribute 12 points and five boards. SRU's Ciara Patterson led three players in double figures with a team-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Brooke Hinderliter finished with a double-double, scoring 17 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Madison Johnson nearly posted a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine boards.
 
HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 29-16, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.   
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
SCOUTING SLIPPERY ROCK
  • Slippery Rock registered a 69-64 win at Mercyhurst on Wednesday night to improve to 5-13 overall and 3-9 in the PSAC West. The Rock has played just five games at home, losing four of those. Head coach Bobby McGraw is in his sixth season and welcomed back nine players from last year's squad. Brooke Hinderliter leads the way. A 5'9" senior guard, Hinderliter is a two-time All-PSAC West honoree who comes in averaging 19.8 ppg., good for fifth in the PSAC. She comes off a 30-point effort at Mercyhurst and has led SRU in scoring in six straight games and 14 overall. She has made 125-of-147 3-pointers and also averages 5.6 rpg. Hinderliter ranks third in career scoring at SRU with 1,558 points. Madison Johnson adds 14.9 ppg. and 5.7 rpg. The 5'8" redshirt senior has made a team-high 22 3-pointers in 62 attempts. Daeja Quick is a third SRU performer scoring in double figures at 11.1 ppg. Quick is a 5'6" senior who has made 18-of-59 3-pointers and leads the team with 56 assists and 23 steals. LeeAnn Gibson, a 5'10" senior forward, is SRU's leading rebounder at 7.9 rpg., adding 9.0 ppg.
