Fighting Scots Wrap Up First Half of PSAC West Action at Mercyhurst in Search of Fourth Straight Win

THE GAME STORIES   
  • The first half of action in the PSAC West concludes on Wednesday. Edinboro made it three straight wins and six victories in the last seven games with an 88-59 win at Slippery Rock on Saturday. The lone loss was a three-point decision to then eighth-ranked Indiana(Pa.), 66-63. The surge has pulled the Fighting Scots into third place in the PSAC West, trailing IUP and Gannon. The stretch also includes a 73-72 win at then 15th-ranked California(Pa.). Mercyhurst comes off a 62-55 win at Cal, boosting the Lakers to 5-14 overall and   5-8 in the PSAC West.
  • Michaela Barnes and Cheniya Sharpe swept the PSAC West weekly honors for the second time in the last three weeks. Barnes averaged 26.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in Edinboro's wins over Seton Hill and Slippery Rock. Sharpe registered double-doubles in both games and now has three straight and five in the last six games. She averaged 12.5 ppg. and 13.0 rpg. In the two contests last week.          
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. They are averaging 74.9 ppg., good for third in the PSAC, while allowing 65.6 ppg., which ranks seventh. Mercyhurst comes in at 62.9 ppg., 15th in the PSAC, while allowing 70.0ppg., which is 14th in the PSAC. Mercyhurst was eighth in the preseason poll.
  • Edinboro is receiving contributions from a variety of players. Michaela Barnes continues her impressive play. The 5'5" guard ranks second in the PSAC and third in Division II in scoring at 23.5 ppg. She has scored 30-or-more points five times this season and eight times in her career, along with 20-or-more points ten times. Barnes moved in to fourth place in career scoring against Seton Hill, and now has 1,681 points. She adds 5.1 rpg., ranks second on the team with 53 assists, and has made 99-of-123 free throws (80.5 pct.). In addition, she has made 22-of-57 3-pointers. The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • Speaking of 3-pointers, Bridgette Shaffer continues to excel from beyond the 3-point arc. The 5'10" graduate student has made 58-of-134 3-pointers, ranking first in the PSAC 3-pointers made per game (3.4) and tied for second in 3-point field goal percentage (43.4 pct.). Shaffer is Edinboro's second-leading scorer (14.2 ppg.) and rebounder (6.9 rpg.). A year ago, she made 49-of-118 3-pointers. Shaffer posted a career-high 25 points against Indiana(Pa.) recently, making seven 3-pointers. She has made at least one 3-pointer in every game this year and 19 straight games dating back to last year.
  • Cheniya Sharpe has had three straight double-doubles and five in the last six games. The 5'11" redshirt senior is averaging 7.7 ppg. and 9.2 rpg. She is second in the conference in rebounding. Over the last six games, she is averaging 12.5 ppg. and 12.2 rpg. She is shooting 54.5 percent from the floor. Sharpe sat out the 2018-19 season with an injury.
  • Rana Elhusseini has started the last 13 games at point guard. The 5'3" freshman had the best game off her career vs. Seton Hill, scoring 26 points while making 5-of-7 3-pointers. She added five assists. She then flirted with a triple-double at Slippery Rock with 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Elhusseini is averaging 8.1 ppg. with a team-high 60 assists. She has made 18-of-55 3-pointers.
  • Madison Amalia, a junior, started the first four games at point guard, but missed the next five games with an injury. She is averaging 7.0 ppg. and has made 19-of-67 3-pointers. 
  • Monica Brown has started the last 14 games and plays a key role defensively. The 5'8" sophomore spearheaded a pressing defense against Indiana(Pa.) that keyed Edinboro's comeback, forcing IUP into turnover after turnover. The Crimson Hawks finished the night with 25 turnovers, with Brown registering four steals. She is averaging 5.2 ppg. and has a team-high 33 steals.
  • Bella Burrelli, a standout on the volleyball team, did not join the basketball team until after the volleyball campaign ended. A 6'0" freshman, she contributes 5.1 ppg. and 3.9 rpg, in 13 contests.
  • Edinboro finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.

  • Jontay Walton scored 25 points and Michaela Barnes added 24 to power Edinboro to an 88-77 win at Slippery Rock. The Fighting Scots have now won four straight games and 8 of their last 9 while improving to 18-6 overall and 13-5 in the PSAC West. Edinboro jumped out to a 28-13 lead after one quarter, then held off several Slippery Rock comeback attempts. SRU closed to within six points at 49-43 midway through the third quarter, but would build the lead back up to 69-55 as Barnes scored 13 points in the period. Walton scored 20 of her 25 points in the first, and did most of her damage from long distance, making 6-of-12 3-pointers. Barnes took over in the second half with 17 of her 24 markers. She went 12-of-14 at the line. Ciara Rosten added her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Michelle Jahn was the final Fighting Scot in double digits, coming off the bench to contribute 12 points and five boards. SRU's Ciara Patterson led three players in double figures with a team-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Brooke Hinderliter finished with a double-double, scoring 17 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Madison Johnson nearly posted a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine boards.
 
HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 30-16, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.   
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
SCOUTING MERCYHURST
  • Mercyhurst had lost four straight games and 9 of the last 10 contests, then traveled to Cal and upset the Vulcans, 62-55, on Saturday. They did so thanks to a dominant third quarter, outscoring Cal, 25-9. The Lakers are 5-14 overall and 5-8 in the PSAC West under first-year head coach Brooke Kohlheim. Amber Renz is one of two Lakers scoring in double figures. The 5'10' senior forward is averaging 14.9 ppg. and is third on the team in rebounds at 4.8 rpg. She is shooting 52.8 percent from the floor (112-of-212). Renz had a team-high 21 points at Cal. Emily Shopene adds 10.1 ppg. The 5'7" junior guard has a team-high 56 assists and stands second in steals (20), along with making 22-of-60 3-pointers. Lauren Lapertosa, a 5'10" senior guard, is the team's top rebounder (5.4 per game) and also has a team-high 30 steals. Nicolette Newman, a 5'7" senior guard, has a team-high 27 3-pointers in 94 attempts.
