THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro plays its first home game since December 3 after playing five straight road contests. The last one was a 72-53 loss at Gannon on Friday night in a game that was much closer than the final score indicates. Edinboro rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to pull to within five points at 58-53 with just over five minutes to play. The Fighting Scots would not score again as Gannon scored the final 14 points. The loss leaves Edinboro at 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC West.
  • West Chester lost its fourth game in a row on Friday, 68-65 to Shepherd, with those losses by a total of 13 points. The Golden Rams have now lost seven of their last eight games to fall to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in PSAC action. Seven of their eight losses have come by nine points or less
  • Edinboro was picked to finish third in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll, while West Chester was tied for fourth in the Eastern Division poll.
  • Edinboro comes in averaging 74.1 ppg., good for sixth in the PSAC, while allowing 68.0 ppg., which ranks tenth. West Chester averages 69.1 ppg. (11th) and allows 71.5 ppg. (13th).
  • Edinboro finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
  • The Fighting Scots lost three 1,000-point scorers from last year's squad. Combined, the trio accounted for 3,880 points. But Wheeler welcomed back a pair of starters, led by All-American Michaela Barnes. The 5'5" guard is not only another 1,000-point scorer, she has now climbed to seventh in the career scoring charts. She had a recent string of three straight games with 30-or-more points, and on Frid became just the seventh player to reach 1,500 career points. She had 18 points at Gannon to give her exactly 1,500.  Barnes scored 31 points vs. Walsh and Millersville and 30 against Cheyney.  She ranks third in the PSAC in scoring at 21.8 ppg. She adds 5.0 rpg. and has made 60-of-78 free throws (76.9 pct.).  The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • Bridgette Shaffer started 24 games a year ago, averaging 7.8 ppg. and 6.6 rpg. The latter figure was second on the team. The 5'10" senior made 49-of-118 3-pointers. She has almost doubled her scoring average this year, coming in at 15.0 ppg. while making 38-of-81 3-pointers. She leads the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.8) and is third in 3-point field goal percentage (46.9 pct.). She comes off an 18-point effort at Gannon, making 6-of-12 3-pointers. She adds 6.8 rpg., good for second on the team. Shaffer has made at least three 3-pointers in every game this year.
  • Cheniya Sharpe has returned after sitting out the 2018-19 season with an injury. The 5'11" redshirt senior is Edinboro's top rebounder at 7.6 per game, good for eighth in the PSAC. She pulled down a career-high 18 vs. Shepherd, with 13 offensive. Sharpe is averaging 5.5 ppg.
  • Madison Amalia started the first four games at point guard, but the junior missed the next five games with an injury. She returned against Gannon, playing 20 minutes. She is averaging 7.0 ppg.  Diminutive freshman Rana Elhusseini has taken over at the point. She is averaging 8.6 ppg. and has a team-high 34 assists.
  • Alexis Rodenbaugh, a local product from North East High School who played her first two years at Jamestown CC, gave the Fighting Scots a lift off the bench at Gannon. The junior swingman contributed season-high of nine points and six rebounds in 21 minutes.

  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact.
