THE GAME STORIES
  • Both Edinboro and Pitt-Johnstown were involved in tight contests on Monday night. The Fighting Scots played for the first time at home in over a month, holding off West Chester, 69-66. The win came after five straight games on the road. Pitt-Johnstown wasn't as fortunate, as Gannon scored at the buzzer to hand the Mountain Cats a 75-73 defeat.             
  • Edinboro has a 5-6 record and is 3-4 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the coaches' preseason poll. UPJ was picked to finish a step behind the Fighting Scots in fourth place. The Mountain Cats got off to a fast start at 7-1, but the Gannon loss was their fifth straight, leaving them at 7-6 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC West.  
  • Edinboro is averaging 73.6 ppg., good for sixth in the PSAC, while allowing 67.8 ppg., which ranks ninth. UPJ averages 71.7 ppg. (8th) and allows 68.2 ppg. (10th).
  • Edinboro finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
  • The Fighting Scots lost three 1,000-point scorers from last year's squad. Combined, the trio accounted for 3,880 points. But Wheeler welcomed back a pair of starters, led by All-American Michaela Barnes. The 5'5" guard is not only another 1,000-point scorer, she has now climbed to seventh in the career scoring charts. She had a recent string of three straight games with 30-or-more points, and on Friday became just the seventh player to reach 1,500 career points. She scored 23 points against West Chester to boost her career total to 1,523 points.  Barnes recently scored 31 points vs. Walsh and Millersville and 30 against Cheyney.  She ranks third in the PSAC in scoring at 21.9 ppg. She adds 5.3 rpg. and has made 65-of-83 free throws (78.3 pct.).  The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • Bridgette Shaffer started 24 games a year ago, averaging 7.8 ppg. and 6.6 rpg. The latter figure was second on the team. The 5'10" senior made 49-of-118 3-pointers. She has almost doubled her scoring average this year, coming in at 15.0 ppg. while making 41-of-89 3-pointers. She leads the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.7) and is third in 3-point field goal percentage (46.1 pct.). After making six 3-pointers for 18 points at Gannon, she followed that up with 15 points nine rebounds vs. West Chester, with three more 3-pointers. She has made at least three 3-pointers in every game this year.  She adds 7.0 rpg., good for second on the team.
  • Cheniya Sharpe is the team's top rebounder at 7.5 per game. The 5'11" redshirt senior sat out the 2018-19 season with an injury. She pulled down a career-high 18 vs. Shepherd, with 13 offensive. Sharpe is averaging 5.5 ppg.
  • Madison Amalia provided a huge boost against West Chester, scoring a career-high 19 points. The junior guard started the first four games at point guard, but missed the next five games with an injury. She returned against Gannon, and made 5-of-10 three's vs. West Chester. She is averaging 9.0 ppg.  Diminutive freshman Rana Elhusseini has taken over at the point. She is averaging 7.8 ppg. and has a team-high 37 assists.

THE LAST MEETING – February 6, 2019 – Pitt-Johnstown 73, Edinboro 68 at Edinboro, Pa.
  • Edinboro saw its 12-game winning streak over Pitt-Johnstown come to an end as the Mountain Cats outscored the Fighting Scots, 23-10, in the final quarter. Edinboro entered the final ten minutes with a 58-50 lead, but a string of nine straight points by UPJ gave the Mountain Cats a 59-58 lead. Tied at 68-68 with just under a minute left, the Mountain Cats scored the final five points of the game on free throws. Jontay Walton led three players in double figures with 20 points, adding six assists and six steals. Ciara Rosten registered her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, going a perfect 6-of-6 at the line. Michaela Barnes also scored 18 points, going 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Pitt-Johnstown ended with four players in double figures. Gabrielle Smith led the way with 21 points, adding eight rebounds and six assists. She was 11-of-12 at the line. Alli McGrath contributed a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Tori Moreland had 14 points and Alexis Hartwick 12.
HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 25-15, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.   
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
SCOUTING PITT-JOHNSTOWN
  • After opening the season with seven wins in their first eight games, the Mountain Cats have lost five straight games. The latest came in heart-breaking fashion, as UPJ tied its game on Monday night with Gannon at 73-73 with 2.2 seconds left, only to have the Lady Knights score at the buzzer for a 75-73 loss. That left head coach Mike Drahos' team at 7-6 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC. It was also UPJ's first loss at home in six games. They are 0-5 on the road, but have won two neutral site games. Four starters returned from last year's squad that was 17-13. They include two All-PSAC West performers in Gabrielle Smith and Alli McGrath. Smith, a 6'0" senior, was a first team selection and comes in averaging 17.5 ppg. and 5.2 rpg. She ranks tenth in the PSAC in scoring and is 16th in career scoring at UPJ with 1,304 points. McGrath, a former transfer from UMBC who was a second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, ranks sixth in the PSAC in scoring at 19.9 ppg. A 5'10" senior, she adds 5.9 rpg. and has made 25-of-75 4-pointers. Olivia Fasick, a 5'8" freshman guard, adds 9.1 ppg. and has made 20-of-62 3-pointers. She leads the team with 62 assists and 34 steals, leading the PSAC in steals and ranking fifth in assists. Maddie Shanahan is the team's leading rebounder at 6.2 per game. She is a 6'1" junior.
