THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro and Cal, along with IUP, have jockeyed for position atop the PSAC West for a number of years. Edinboro has enjoyed great success in recent years vs. the Vulcans, including four straight wins over Cal. Last year, Edinboro prevailed 62-61 at Cal after a 99-92 win at Edinboro. Cal was ranked 12th in the first meeting and 17th in the second. The Fighting Scots have won the last four meetings in the series. This will likely be the first of back-to-back games against national-ranked opponents, with eighth-ranked IUP visiting McComb Fieldhouse on Wednesday, January 15.
  • The Vulcans come in to the latest meeting ranked 15th in the WBCA Division II Top 25 with a 12-2 record and 6-2 in the PSAC West. Cal is riding a four-game winning streak after a 66-60 win over Shepherd on Wednesday, improving to 7-0 at the Convocation Center. Edinboro has won back-to-back games for the first time this season after an impressive 86-55 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Monday. The Fighting Scots are 6-6 and 4-4 in PSAC action after being picked to finish third in the Western Division in the coaches' preseason poll. Cal was a spot ahead in second place. Both teams will be playing for the fourth time in nine days.
  • Edinboro is averaging 74.7 ppg., good for fifth in the PSAC, while allowing 66.8 ppg., which ranks eighth. Cal averages 73.4 ppg. and allows 65.6 ppg., both figures ranking sixth in the conference. The Vulcans lead the PSAC in turnover margin at +8.0.
  • Edinboro finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 20-9 record under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. The former Edinboro standout led Edinboro to a ninth straight 20-win season and a PSAC Tournament berth for the tenth straight year. Edinboro would qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.
  • The Fighting Scots come off their most complete effort of the season while handling Pitt-Johnstown an 86-55 defeat. They dominated the glass, 47-25, and forced 27 turnovers while holding UPJ to 35.8 percent shooting.
  • Edinboro is led by senior Michaela Barnes. The 5'5" guard has climbed to seventh in the career scoring charts with 1,547 points. She had a recent string of three straight games with 30-or-more points, scoring 31 points vs. Walsh and Millersville and 30 against Cheyney.  She ranks third in the PSAC in scoring at 22.1 ppg., adding 5.0 rpg., and has made 69-of-88 free throws (78.4 pct.).  The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.

The 5'10" senior made 49-of-118 3-pointers. She comes in at 14.0 ppg. while making 42-of-95 3-pointers. She leads the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.5) and is second in 3-point field goal percentage (44.2 pct.).  She had made at least three 3-pointers in the first 11 games before draining just one trifecta vs. UPJ.  She adds 7.0 rpg., good for second on the team.
  • Cheniya Sharpe snapped out of a bit of a lull in impressive fashion on Wednesday. The 5'11" redshirt senior had scored just nine points in the previous four games, but she scored a career-high 19 points vs. Pitt-Johnstown, adding 12 rebounds for her second double-double. Sharpe is averaging 6.3 ppg. and a team-high 7.9 rpg., the latter figure third in the PSAC. She pulled down a career-high 18 vs. Shepherd, with 13 offensive. LAST MEETING
February 9, 2019 – Edinboro 62, California(Pa.) 61 at California, Pa.
  • Edinboro erased a 19-point deficit to hand 17th-ranked California(Pa.) its first home loss in two seasons. A well-rested Vulcan team took advantage of their bye week, as they jumped out to a 25-6 lead after the first quarter. The Fighting Scots would score the first ten points of the second quarter, part of a 17-2 run, to pull to within 38-28 at the half. The deficit was still eight points at 54-46 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Fighting Scots rode a stifling defensive effort in the fourth quarter, plus a strong effort by Ciara Rosten, to complete the rally. The Vulcans would make 3-of-17 shots, with 11 straight misses at one point, as Edinboro outscored Cal, 16-7. Limited by foul trouble, Rosten scored 10 of Edinboro's 16 points in the period and once again held down Seairra Barrett, one of the leading scorers in Division II. Rosten keyed a 12-0 run as Edinboro went from a 59-50 deficit to 62-59 lead. Her three-point play tied the score at 59-59, and Edinboro took its first lead of the game at 61-59 on Michaela Barnes' drive with 3:29 remaining. Barnes kept the Fighting Scots in the game for three quarters with 25 of her 27 points. Rosten added 16 points. Jontay Walton was the third Fighting Scot in double figures. She contributed 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Abbey Sporio led the Vulcans in scoring with 14 points, adding seven boards and five steals. Gina Vallecorsa was the only other Vulcan in double digits with 10 points.

  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
