THE GAME STORIES
  • With a potential showdown for third place looming on Saturday against Cal, Edinboro can't afford to look past a Clarion squad that enters Wednesday's game riding a two-game losing streak, with losses in 10 of its last 11 games. The Golden Eagles are 4-19 overall and 2-15 in PSAC action following Saturday's 72-65 loss at Mercyhurst. Edinboro had a five-game losing streak snapped on Saturday at Pitt-Johnstown, falling 78-71 in overtime. The Fighting Scots trailed by 13 points in the first half, then rallied to lead by as much as six points in the fourth quarter. UPJ would send the game into overtime tied at 65 with a late 3-pointer. The Mountain Cats would outscore Edinboro, 13-6, in the overtime period to edge the Scots, 78-71. That leaves Edinboro at 12-8 overall and 10-6 in the PSAC West. They sit in a tie with Cal for third in the division with six games to play.  Edinboro won the first meeting with Clarion, 63-47, holding the Golden Eagles scoreless the final five minutes while running off the final 11 points.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. Four players scored in double figures, with Barnes leading the way with 19 points.

THE LAST MEETING – January 17, 2020 – Edinboro 63, Clarion 47 at Edinboro, Pa.
Michaela Barnes scored 30 points and Edinboro would score the final 11 points to hold off an upset-minded Clarion squad.  The contest was moved up 24 hours due to potentially dangerous weather condition, and both teams were playing for the second time in three days. Edinboro led 31-24 at the half, and would enter the fourth quarter with a 47-35 lead.  Clarion would cut the margin to 52-47 on the strength of 9-3 run. That's when head coach Callie Wheeler called a timeout with 5:02 remaining. When the Fighting Scots took the court again, they would score the final 11 points of the game, holding Clarion scoreless the rest of the way. Madison Amalia drained a baseline 3-pointer out of the timeout, and following a Clarion miss, Barnes scored the next six straight points. She made 9-of-20 field goals, including 2-of-5 3-pointers, and was a perfect 10-of-10 at the line. She added four assists. Cheniya Sharpe joined Barnes in double figures with 13 points and 13 rebounds, seven on the offensive end. She added three blocked shots. HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 32-17, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.

Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
