LAST MEETING
January 15, 2020 – #8 Indiana(Pa.) 66, Edinboro 63 at Edinboro, Pa.
  • Edinboro fell just shy of upsetting eighth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) thanks to a harassing defense to rally from a 15-point deficit. IUP led 39-24 with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter. That's when the Fighting Scots turned to a pressing defense that forced the Crimson Hawks into numerous turnovers. It's also when Bridgette Shaffer caught fire. The redshirt senior started the Fighting Scots on a 13-5 run as Edinboro would pull to within 46-37 after three quarters. She had been held scoreless the first 20 minutes, missing all three of her shot attempts while sitting half of the half with foul trouble. Shaffer hit her first basket of the night, a 3-pointer, with 4:47 to play following an IUP turnover. It would be one of seven turnovers by the Crimson Hawks once the run started.  IUP hit a three to open the fourth quarter and build the lead back to 49-37, but the Fighting Scots responded with the next 15 points to take a 52-49 lead. Shaffer proved the catalyst, as she made three 3-pointers. Her third 3-pointer of the period gave the Fighting Scots their first lead since the first quarter at 50-49 with 5:58 remaining. When Shaffer made her fifth 3-pointer of the night, Edinboro had its biggest lead at 58-54 with 3:38 on the clock. IUP reclaimed the lead at 59-58 with five straight points, but Shaffer's layup made it 60-59 at the 1:20 mark. Courtney Alexander followed with a three, but Shaffer hit her seventh of the night and sixth of the period for a 63-62 lead with 49 seconds showing. Natalie Myers' two free throws gave the lead back to IUP at 64-63 with 24 seconds left. Justina Mascaro would add two free throws for a 66-63 IUP advantage with 16 seconds left. The Fighting Scots had two last gasps. Shaffer's contested three barely missed, but IUP turned the ball over. Barnes' three would be blocked at the buzzer. Edinboro ended the night shooting 31.5 percent (23-of-73) while IUP finished at 50.0 percent (24-of-48). Both teams made eight 3-pointers, Edinboro on 29 attempts and IUP on 22. Edinboro was 9-of-14 at the line while IUP was 10-of-12. The Fighting Scots forced IUP into 25 turnovers, sparked by the hounding defense of Monica Brown, who finished with four steals. Edinboro would commit just eight turnovers and hold a 27-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Shaffer paced the Fighting Scots with a career-high 25 points, all in the second half. She made a career-best seven 3-pointers on 12 attempts. Machaela Barnes was also in double-figures with 17 points, adding five rebounds and four assists. Cheniya Sharpe contributed eight points and nine rebounds. IUP would finish with four players in double figures. Mascara led the way with 20 points, adding four assists and four blocks. Myers had 14 points and eight rebounds, while Alexander totaled 12 points.
