THE GAME STORIES   
  • Edinboro has clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament for the 11th straight year and is closing in on clinching a home game in the first round of the playoffs. That contest would take place on Monday, March 2. The Fighting Scots come in with a 14-9 record and are 12-7 in the PSAC West after nearly upsetting ninth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) on Wednesday. The Fighting Scots would fall in double overtime, 80-72, after rallying from a 16-point third-quarter deficit. Mercyhurst is battling with Seton Hill and Slippery Rock for the final spot in the Western Division playoff field. The Lakers are 7-18 overall, but 7-12 in conference play. Seton Hill is also 7-12, with Slippery Rock at 6-13.
  • Saturday is Edinboro's annual Make-A-Wish Day. The Fighting Scots have ranked among the top schools in Division II in Make-A-Wish donations for many years. The day will be capped by another Make-A-Wish reveal.
  • The Fighting Scots have won 16 of the last 17 meetings with Mercyhurst, and have not lost to the Lakers at McComb Fieldhouse since the 2001-02 season. Edinboro has won the last 15 meetings at home. .        
  • Edinboro is averaging 74.3 ppg., climbing to fourth in th while allowing 65.2 ppg., which ranks eighth. Mercyhurst ranks 14th in both scoring at 63.2 ppg. and scoring defense at 70.5 ppg. Edinboro has made great use of the 3-pointer, ranking third in the PSAC in both three's made per game (7.7) and 3-point field goal percentage (33.8 pct.).  
  • It has been a great week for Michaela Barnes. On Monday, she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week for the fifth time this season. On Thursday, she was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-Region 2 Team. Also, on Wednesday she fell one point shy of her own school record, scoring 42 point as Edinboro nearly upset IUP. In the process, she moved past Jessica Rowe into second place in career scoring with 1,869 career points. She is 57 points shy of Samantha Reimer's school record of 1,926 points. Barnes has scored 587 points this season, which ranks fifth, after scoring 609 points a year ago. That figure ranks fourth. She looks to become the first Edinboro player to score 600 points in a season more than once.   
  • Barnes comes in averaging a team-high 25.5 ppg., moving into first place in the PSAC and second in Division II. She has had 15 games of 20-or-more points and eight games with 30-or-more points this season. The 5'5" guard broke her won school record with 43 points in the first meeting at Mercyhurst. She adds 5.2 rpg., ranks second on the team with 72 assists, and has made 150-of-182 free throws (82.4 pct.). In addition, she has made 29-of-73 3-pointers. The senior was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • Bridgette Shaffer stands second on the team in scoring and rebounding at 13.5 ppg. and 6.7 rpg. Her forte is the 3-pointer. She has made 74-of-172 3-pointers, ranking first in the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.2) and second in 3-point field goal percentage (43.0 pct.). She stands 13th nationally in 3-pointers per game and 21st in 3-point field goal percentage. A year ago, she made 49-of-118 3-pointers. Her 74 3-pointers this year ranks fifth in a season, and her 136 career 3-pointers is 10th.  The 5'10" graduate student posted a career-high 25 points in the first meeting with Indiana(Pa.), making seven 3-pointers. She had made at least one 3-pointer in every game this year and 20 straight games dating back to last year before missing all three attempts vs. Gannon. She has made a 3-pointer in 24 of the last 25 games.
  • Rana Elhusseini was a highly-regarded recruit from Michigan who has taken over as the starting point guard. She has boosted her scoring average to 10.2 ppg., including a season-high 26 points vs. Seton Hill. The 5'3" freshman has a team-leading 81 assists. She has made 29-of-88 3-pointers and is shooting 87.7 percent from the line (57-of-65).
  • Cheniya Sharpe has had six double-doubles in the last 12 games, along with pulling down 10-or-more rebounds in nine of the last 12 games. That includes 16 on Wednesday at IUP. The 5'11" graduate student is averaging 7.1 ppg. and 9.7 rpg., ranking  second in the conference in rebounding. Over the last ten games, she is averaging 11.9 rpg. She is shooting 53.7 percent from the floor (65-of-121). Sharpe sat out the 2018-19 season with an injury. She has been named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week twice.
  • Monica Brown rounds out the starting five. The 5'8" sophomore has started 20 games. While averaging 4.4 ppg., she plays a key role defensively. She has a team-leading 44 steals.  
  • The Edinboro bench features Madison Amalia and Bella Burrelli. Amalia, a junior guard, started the first four games at point guard, but missed the next five games with an injury. She is averaging 5.3 ppg. and has made 20-of-78 3-pointers. Burrelli, a standout on the volleyball team, did not join the basketball team until after the volleyball campaign ended. A 6'0" freshman, she contributes 4.1 ppg. and 3.3 rpg, in 19 contests.

Michaela Barnes scored a school-record 43 points as Edinboro defeated Mercyhurst for the 16th time in the last 17 meetings. Barnes and freshman guard Rana Elhusseini put on an incredible display, combining for 67 points as Elhusseini fell just shy of her season high with 24 points. At one point, the guard tandem scored 63 of Edinboro's first 71 points.
In addition, they combined for 37 straight points from the first quarter to the third quarter. Barnes consistently drove to the hoop or pulled up in the paint for jumpers. She would make 15-of-28 field goal attempts, missing her only three 3-point attempts, and convert 13-of-14 shots at the line. Amber Renz led Mercyhurst with 19 points, with 17 of those coming in the first half.
 
HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 34-18, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.   
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
SCOUTING MERCYHURST
  • Mercyhurst comes in to McComb Fieldhouse with a 7-18 overall record and 7-12 in the PSAC West. The Lakers are tied for the sixth and final spot in the Western Division with Seton hill. Slippery Rock is a game behind with a 6-13 ledger, with all three teams having three remaining games. Mercyhurst had won back-to-back games over Seton Hill and Clarion, but have dropped their last two contests, including a 77-75 loss to Pitt-Johnstown in double overtime on Wednesday. Head coach Brooklyn Kolheim is in her first season at the helm after previously coaching at Lake Erie. The Lakers showcase Amber Renz, a 5'10" senior forward who recently went over 1,000 career points. She is averaging 16.2 ppg. and 5.1 rpg., the latter figure second on the team. She is shooting 53.6 percent from the floor (156-of-291), good for fifth in the PSAC, and 81.8 percent from the line (72-of-88). She also leads the team with 20 blocks. Nicolete Newman, a 5'7" senior guard, adds 10.1 ppg. She is the team's top 3-point threat with 37 in 133 attempts. Junior guard Emily Shopene adds 9.4 ppg. with a team-high 80 assists. She has made 26-of-75 3-pointers. Kori Sidwell, a 5'8" senior guard, is the team's top rebounder at 5.3 rpg.
