THE GAME STORIES   
  • Two days after meeting in the regular season finale at Seton Hill, Edinboro hosts the Griffins in a PSAC Tournament First Round game. Much more will be at stake Monday night at McComb Fieldhouse, as the winner will move on to play at Gannon, the second seed in the PSAC West, on Wednesday, March 4. The loser will see its season come to an end. Edinboro comes into the tournament as the third seed, tying Cal with a 14-8 record in league play. The Fighting Scots defeated Cal twice in the regular season. Seton Hill secured the sixth and final berth with a 72-68 win over Edinboro on Saturday, coupled with Cal's loss to Gannon. Edinboro comes in at 16-10 overall while Seton Hill is 14-14 and finished at 8-14 in the PSAC West.
  • Edinboro is making its 11th consecutive appearance in the PSAC Tournament, and has five PSAC titles, four in the last nine years, with the last one coming in 2018. A year ago, Edinboro lost to Gannon in the first round, 71-67, but would go on to receive a berth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.          
  • The other Western Division first round game has fourth seed Cal (20-8) hosting fifth seed Pitt-Johnstown (16-12). Wednesday's PSAC Quarterfinal games will feature Gannon (22-6), the second seed, hosting the Edinboro-Seton Hill winner, while top seed Indiana(Pa.) (26-2) will host the Cal-UPJ survivor. The two quarterfinal winners will advance to the PSAC Final Four on Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 8 at the highest remaining Western Division seed.
  • Edinboro has dominated the all-time series with Seton Hill, 23-2, but the second win for the Griffins came on Saturday. Seton Hill would rally from a nine-point second half deficit while making 16 of 23 free throws in the half for a 72-68 win. That snapped a string of six straight wins for Edinboro in the series. The Fighting Scots won the first meeting in January, 90-71. Edinboro and Seton Hill have met twice in the PSAC Tournament, with the Fighting Scots winning both meetings. Edinboro prevailed, 82-50, in 2016-17, and was a 68-53 winner in 2014-15.
  • Edinboro is tied with Shepherd for the lead in the PSAC in scoring at 74.5 ppg., while allowing 65.3 ppg., which ranks eighth. Seton Hill ranks fourth in scoring at 73.9 ppg., but is 16th in scoring defense at 73.6 ppg.  The contests features two teams who rely on the 3-pointer. The Griffins rank second in the PSAC with 7.8 three's made per game, while Edinboro is third (7.6). Edinboro has the top individual scorer, Michaela Barnes at 26.3 ppg., and the top individual rebounder, Cheniya Sharpe at 10.2 rpg., in the PSAC.                 
  • Barnes has been on an incredible roll of late while boosting her average to 26.3 ppg. She now leads Division II in scoring. Barnes has scored 684 points this season, the second-highest season total. She is eight points shy of breaking Tammy Walker-Strode's record of 691 points set in 1991-92. After scoring 609 points a year ago, the senior guard is the first Edinboro player to score 600 points in a season more than once.  She has been named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week six times this year. 
  • Barnes has had 18 games of 20-or-more points and nine games with 30-or-more points this season. The 5'5" guard adds 5.3 rpg., leads the team with 89 assists, and has made 186-of-224 free throws (83.0 pct.). She has broken the school record for free throws made in a season, along with standing second in career free throws made (496). In addition, she has moved into 17th in career assists (277). Barnes was an honorable mention WBCA Division II All-American, along with honorable mention Division II Bulletin All-American honors. She was also a first team All-PSAC West selection and is a two-time All-PSAC West selection and the 2017 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. A year ago, Barnes averaged a team-leading 21.0 ppg., ranking fourth in the PSAC and 15th in Division II.
  • Bridgette Shaffer is second on the team in both scoring and rebounding at 13.5 ppg. and 6.6 rpg.  The graduate student has had four games of 20-or-more points this season. Her forte is the 3-pointer. She has made 82-of-193 3-pointers, ranking first in the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (3.2) and second in 3-point field goal percentage (42.5 pct.). She needs seven more 3-pointers to break the season record for 3-pointers made, currently ranking third, and is eighth in career 3-pointers with 144.  A year ago, she made 49-of-118 3-pointers. The 5'10" forward posted a career-high 25 points in the first meeting with Indiana(Pa.), making seven 3-pointers. She has made a 3-pointer in 26 of the last 27 games.
  • Rana Elhusseini was a highly-regarded recruit from Michigan who has taken over as the starting point guard. She comes in at 9.6 ppg., including a season-high 26 points in the first meeting wirth Seton Hill. The 5'3" freshman stands second in assists with 87. She has made 32-of-95 3-pointers and is shooting 88.1 percent from the line (59-of-67).
  • Cheniya Sharpe has had nine double-doubles in the last 15 games, along with pulling down 10-or-more rebounds in 12 of the last 15 games. All told, she has had ten double-doubles after finishing with 10 points and 16 rebounds at Seton Hill. The 5'11" graduate student is averaging 7.5 ppg. and 10.2 rpg., leading the conference in rebounding. Over the last 12 games, she is averaging 12.3 rpg. She is shooting 52.3 percent from the floor (79-of-151). Sharpe sat out the 2018-19 season with an injury. She has been named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week twice.
  • Monica Brown rounds out the starting five. The 5'8" sophomore has started 22 games. While averaging 4.3 ppg., she plays a key role defensively, as evidenced last Saturday vs. Mercyhurst. She would finish with a career-high 5 steals, and has a team-leading 50 on the season. Brown ranks ninth in the conference in steals.
EDINBORO IN THE PSAC TOURNAMENT
  • The Fighting Scots make their 11th straight trip to the PSAC Tournament. The first nine were under head coach Stan Swank, with second-year head coach Callie Wheeler leading the way the last two years. Wheeler played a major role in the first nine as Swank's assistant coach. 
  • Edinboro is in search of its sixth PSAC title, last winning in 2018. The Fighting Scots, seeded second that year, blitzed California(Pa.), West Chester, and Millersville for their fifth PSAC championship, and fourth in the last nine years (2011, 2012, 2014, and 2018). The first PSAC crown came in 1990. 
  • The Fighting Scots have amassed a 29-18 record in the PSAC postseason since their first appearance in 1989. 
  • Edinboro has won at least one PSAC Tournament contest in nine of the last ten seasons. 
  • A year ago, the Fighting Scots suffered a 71-67 loss to Gannon in the first round. They would go on to receive a berth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.

THIS YEAR'S MEETINGS
January 22, 2020 – Edinboro 90, Seton Hill 71
  • Edinboro used a fast start and a season-best scoring effort from freshman guard Rana Elhusseini to continue its domination of Seton Hill. The Fighting Scots came out on fire and never trailed in the game, leading 22-14 after one quarter. Elhusseini accounted for nine points in the quarter on three 3-pointers. The lead would grow to as much as 20 points in the second quarter as Edinboro went on a 13-2 run, with Elhusseini hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Seton Hill would stage a late rally, scoring the final five points, to close to 42-27 at the half. Elhusseini had 17 points at the half, making 5-of-6 3-pointers. Any hopes Seton Hill had of making a game of it vanished at the start of the third quarter, as Edinboro scored the first 11 points of the half. Elhusseini would finish the night with 26 points after having scored 29 points in the previous six games. The diminutive 5'3" guard made 9-of-14 field goals, including 5-of-7 3-pointers, and went 3-of-3 at the line. She added five assists and a pair of steals. Michaela Barnes, meanwhile, finished as the game's leading scorer with 27 points, adding seven rebounds and six assists.
    Cheniya Sharpe recorded a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Bridgette Shaffer was a fourth Fighting Scot in double figures with 12 points. Seton Hill had a pair of players score in double figures. Cheyenne Trest finished with 13 points and Madelyn Fischer came off the bench to contribute 11.
February 29, 2020 – Seton Hill 72, Edinboro 68
  • Seton Hill rallied from a nine-point second half deficit to snap a six-game losing streak to Edinboro. The Fighting Scots led 33-30 at the half and built the advantage to 41-32 early in the third quarter when Bridgette Shaffer scored on a layup. The Griffins responded with seven straight points, the last five by Cheyenne Trest, to pull to within 41-39. They would take the lead for the first time since the first two minutes of the game at 49-48 with just under two minutes to play on Tiana Stewart's 3-pointer. Seton Hill would lead 52-50 after three quarters. The Fighting Scots would reclaim the lead once, at 54-53 with 7:56 remaining on a pair of free throws by Michaela Barnes. A Trest three gave the lead back to Seton Hill at 56-54.  The Griffins would go to the line repeatedly after that, making 8-of-10 free throws, with their four baskets all layups. Edinboro continued to put the pressure on, closing to one point on five occasions. The last came with 51 seconds remaining at 69-68 after Shaffer drained a 3-pointer. Trest made a pair of free throws with 27 seconds to play, and after an Edinboro missed 3-pointer, Lexi Civittolo made one-of-two free throws with 13 seconds to go. Edinboro would come down and miss another three. Barnes finished with her first double-double of the season and second of her career with 26 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, adding 6 assists. Three other Fighting Scots scored in double figures. Shaffer had 11 points and 6 rebounds. Cheniya Sharpe had her fourth straight double-double with 16 rebounds and 10 points. Freshman Emma Elash came off the bench to add 10 points. Trest would lead all scorers with 33 points, going 13-of-14 at the line. Lexi Civittolo added 16 points. Katie Nolan grabbed 20 boards.
HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 36-19, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.   
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
SCOUTING SETON HILL
  • Seton Hill head coach Mark Kotarski is in his seventh season at the helm, and has guided the Griffins to the PSAC Tournament each year. Seton Hill snapped a four-game losing streak with Saturday's 72-68 win over Edinboro. The Griffins come in with a 14-14 overall record and finished at 8-14 in the PSAC West. They opened the season with six straight wins and were 10-1 at one point before losing 12 of their last 14 games. The losing coincided with the loss of Courtney Cecere. The 5'9" junior played 11 games, averaging 10.5 ppg. and 6.6 rpg. The Griffins still showcase three players in double figures, led by Katie Nolan at 13.8 ppg. The 6'1" junior is also the team's top rebounder at 9.5 per game, ranking third in the PSAC, while shooting 51.5 percent from the floor. Lexi Civittolo is next at 13.3 ppg. A 5'10" senior swingman, she has made 30-of-117 3-pointers. She adds 53 steals. Cheyenne Trest, a 5'7" junior guard, boosted her average to 13.3 ppg. after scoring 33 points against Edinboro on Saturday. She leads the team in assists with 103 and adds 4.3 rpg.  She has made 37-of-122 3-pointers. The Griffins rank second in the PSAC with 218 3-pointers in 750 attempts. Their top 3-point threat is Tiana Stewart, a 5'9" redshirt sophomore who has made 45-of-148 shots from beyond the arc while contributing 8.1 ppg. and 5.0 rpg.

  • A win over Seton Hill would send Edinboro into the PSAC Quarterfinals and a date with second-seeded Gannon. The PSAC Quarterfinal game is scheduled for Wednesday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hammermill Center.  
  • An Edinboro-Gannon matchup would mark a rematch of last year's first round PSAC game. The Lady Knights upset third-seeded Edinboro a year ago, 71-67.
  • The Fighting Scots split the two games with Gannon this year, with the teams prevailing on their own home court. Gannon posted a 72-53 win at home on January 3, while Edinboro returned the favor with a 56-52 win at McComb Fieldhouse on February 5.
