Canton, Ohio- The Edinboro volleyball team will compete in yet another weekend tournament as they travel to Canton, Ohio for the Hall of Fame City Challenge on Sept. 2. and 3.
The Friday slate begins with host Malone University at 2:30 p.m. and ends with Bloomsburg University at 7 p.m. Saturday's schedule starts with Davenport University at 1:30 p.m. and ends with Notre Dame College at 6 p.m.
Fresh After Four
The Fighting Scots performed exceptionally well in their season opening tournament last week. The fresh new team for 2022 exited the weekend with a (3-1) record. Edinboro dropped their first match against Maryville University in four sets. The Scots countered by winning the remaining three matches of the weekend. Edinboro's three wins came without losing any sets. "This weekend showed us our areas we need to be better in. It highlighted our weaknesses and that is a positive thing prior to conference play. I am looking forward to practice this week and seeing how our training transfers to match play." said head coach Missy Soboleski.
Numbers Don't Lie
Edinboro's quick (3-1) start is a direct result of consistent team execution. The numbers don't lie, Edinboro led in every statistical category in comparison to their four opponents.
The Scot's defensive efforts led to 27 team blocks at a rate of 2.1 blocks per set, as well as 178 digs, averaging 1.1 more digs per set over their opponent.
Edinboro's offense led to 145 kills, 136 assists, 25 aces, and only 19 errors in four matches. The Scot's efficient hitting percentage totaled to a (.194) clip compared to their opponent's (.107).
Sally Sterkel contributed steady production during the opening weekend. Sterkel finished with 16 blocks (team-high), including eight in one match. On offense she added 23 total kills while hitting at a (.391) clip.
Bella Burrelli also contributed solid performances which generated impactful play. Burrelli's best match came against Maryville when she finished with 12 kills and 11 digs. Burrelli capped off the weekend with 39 kills (team-high) while hitting at a (.128) clip.
Alicia Eldredge found success in her play on both offense and defense. Eldredge's best performance came against Kentucky State, when she finished with a game-high 33 assists. She capped off the weekend with 113 assists at a rate of 8.69 per set, as well as 25 digs on defense.
Malone University (Friday, 2:30 P.M.)
The Malone Pioneers are a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference and are led by head coach Rafael Gonzalez. The Pioneers come into the match with a (1-3) overall record after their opening weekend at the Gannon-Mercyhurst Invitational. Malone's lone victory came against Notre Dame College in five sets. Keep an eye on Ri'Gyn Humes who leads the team with 29 kills after four matches.
Bloomsburg University (Friday, 7:00 P.M.)
The Bloomsburg Huskies are members of the PSAC conference and are led by head coach Dan Kreiger. The Huskies come into the match with a (1-2) overall record after their opening weekend at the California (Pa.) Tournament. Bloomsburg's one win was in five sets over Lake Erie College. Emily Jackson leads the Huskies with 11 blocks in three matches this season.
Davenport University (Saturday, 1:30 P.M.)
The Davenport Panthers are members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and are led by head coach Brian Netzler. The Panters come into the match with a (3-1) overall record after their opening weekend at the Flager Saints Invitational tournament. Davenport's efficiency on the attack is a strength for the Panthers, the team hits at a (.251) clip. Hayley Kreiger leads the team with 62 kills, at a rate of 4.13 per set.
Notre Dame College (Saturday, 6:00 P.M.)
The Notre Dame Falcons are members of the Mountain East Conference and are led by head coach Anthony Mezacapa. The Falcons come into the match with a (1-3) overall record after their opening weekend at the Mercyhurst/Gannon Invitational tournament. Notre Dame's one win came against Mercyhurst in three quick sets. Carli Derda leads the Falcons with 14 blocks in four matches this season.
