New York – The Edinboro wheelchair basketball returns to action on Sunday with a doubleheader against the City University of New York.
The Games
The first game is slated for 8 a.m. with the second se for a noon tipoff. The games will be streamed on the
Edinboro Wheelchair Basketball YouTube Channel.
Back From Break
This is the Scots first action since taking on Illinois on Dec. 16. The team came back a week before classes to prepare for a matchup with CUNY.
"The focus in the first part of the week was to get everyone pushing at the same speed as they had prior to break. I didn't try and add anything new in until later in the week," said head coach
Jim Glatch. "The 2
nd thing was to keep players within the same working group. Normally I mix up players so they can do drills with different teammates. Last week and most of this week I ran 2- 5 player units to help build continuity. Wednesday was the best practice we had since returning from break. Everyone seemed to be on the same page with less mistakes and a better understanding of what each other's role was."
A Second Look
This is the second and third contest against CUNY this season. The Scots dropped a 79-51 decision on Dec. 1 in Whitewater, Wisc. CUNY shot 80 percent from the field in the first half on their way to a 54-17 halftime lead.
Jeremy Evans led the Edinboro offense with 19 points while
Isaiah Johnson chipped in 14.
"We need to play better team defense and hit some shots especially in the first half," said Glatch. "CUNY shot 80% from the field in the 1
st half of our last meeting and we shot 27%. That's just poor defense and poor shooting. I have watched that game at least 10 times, and we had opportunities to score, but just didn't hit the shot. Our transition defense was slow and didn't deny CUNY's chair movement and it seemed like CUNY couldn't miss."
Statistical Leader
Evans paces the Edinboro offense with 13.7 points per game. He is also the leading rebounder at 6.85 boards per contest. Johnson also averages double-figure scoring with 10.8.
Second Season
"Because of the long break it seems like the start of a new season, said Glatch. "After starting off well in November we struggled in December against the top four teams. The message to the team is to forget about the last two tournaments as we can't change those results and focus on what we can control moving forward. If the team can bring the same focus and energy that we have had in practice the past few days and hopefully get a win or two, this will give our players the positive motivation they need moving forward in the second semester."
