IOWA CITY, Ia. (Feb. 16, 2013) – The Edinboro wrestling team made its first trip to Iowa City to face fabled Iowa since 1987, but the 15th-ranked Fighting Scots were unable to upset the second-ranked Hawkeyes and spoil Senior Night.  Iowa prevailed 31-6, winning the final six matches and six matches in all by bonus points to improve to 19-1.  Edinboro falls to 9-5.

After losing major decisions at 125 and 133 lbs., Edinboro came up with its lone wins of the night as Mitchell Port and Dave Habat won decisions at 141 and 149 lbs., respectively.  Port improved to 26-3 while winning one of three matches featuring nationally-ranked foes.  Ranked fifth, Port was impressive in a 5-0 decision over eighth-ranked Mark Ballweg, handing him just his second loss of the season.

Following a scoreless first period, Port would register a pair of back points following a scramble at the edge of the mat for a 2-0 lead, and rode out Ballweg.  Port would start down as the third period began, and reversed Ballweg for a 4-0 lead.  He added a point for riding time while winning for the 11th straight time.

At 149 lbs., 16th-ranked Habat won a 5-2 decision over Brody Grothus to improve to 23-7.  He recorded a takedown in the first 30 seconds on a single leg shot for a 2-0 lead, with Grothus' escape making it 2-1 after one period.  Habat began down in the second and spun around for a reversal and 4-1 advantage, with Grothus quickly escaping to make it 4-2 after two periods.  Habat would ride out Grothus in the third to add a point for riding time.

Two other Fighting Scots came up just shy in their bouts despite strong efforts.  At 165 lbs., Johnny Greisheimer fell by a 5-3 decision to 13th-ranked Nick Moore.  The junior was the aggressor throughout but was unable to finish several shots.  The score 4-2 after two periods thanks to a pair of deep single-leg shots by Moore.  The lone scoring in the second period was a Greisheimer escape.  In the third, Moore's escape was the only score as the Iowa sophomore improved to 13-5 while dropping Greisheimer to 15-11.

At 184 lbs., freshman Vince Pickett (19-13) got off to a slow start but then came on strong but ran out of time against 14th-ranked Ethen Lofthouse (14-4), losing an 11-7 decision.  Lofthouse led 4-1 after one period thanks to a pair of takedowns.  He started the second period with a reversal, but Pickett would register an escape and takedown to close to 6-4.  The period ended with a Lofthouse escape and takedown, making it 9-4.  In the third period Pickett used an escape and his second takedown to narrow the margin to 9-7, but Lofthouse would escape and owned riding time for the final margin.

The highlight match of the night came at 133 lbs., but third-ranked A.J. Schopp saw his ten-match winning streak snapped as he dropped a 9-0 major decision to second-ranked Tony Ramos.  Schopp fell to 25-3 with the loss, while Ramos, who placed third at 133 lbs. at Nationals last year, remained perfect at 20-0.

The other matchup of ranked wrestlers was at heavyweight, where 20th-ranked Ernest James opened with a quick takedown against sixth-ranked Bobby Telford.  After that it was all Telford, as last year's fifth place finisher at Nationals improved to 15-3 with a 13-2 major decision.  The loss dropped James to 20-9.

Two-time national champion Matt McDonough opened the match with a 14-3 major decision over Kory Mines at 125 lbs.  Ranked number one, McDonough improved to 16-1 while Mines suffered his third straight loss while falling to 13-16.
