MORGANTOWN, WV (Feb. 23, 2013) – The 15
th-ranked Edinboro wrestling team concluded the dual portion of its season in impressive fashion on Saturday, handing former Eastern Wrestling League rival West Virginia a 29-9 defeat at the WVU Coliseum. The Fighting Scots end the year with a 10-6 record, while WVU, now a member of the Big 12, fell to 1-10.
The Fighting Scots won seven of the ten bouts, once again led by its sophomore trio of
A.J. Schopp,
Mitchell Port and
Dave Habat. The threesome not only won once again, but Schopp and Port picked up pins and Habat won by technical fall.
The night got started with West Virginia's Shane Young improving to 11-5 with a 4-2 decision over
Kory Mines (14-17) at 125 lbs.
Edinboro would win the next three matches to pull ahead 17-3. Schopp won by fall over Colin Johnston at 133 lbs., with the end coming at 3:55. For the fourth-ranked Schopp, he improved to 27-3 with his 17
th fall, which is tied for the sixth-highest season total. He now has 36 career falls, seventh all-time.
Port, also ranked fourth, followed with his second fall in two nights to boost his record to 28-3. He pinned Sean Fee at 1:25 in his 141 lb. match to claim his 13
th straight match.
Dave Habat was up next at 149 lbs. He won a 15-0 technical fall over Brutus Scheffel (9-10), finishing the match at the 5:49 mark. The 17
th-ranked Habat is now 25-7.
Casey Fuller took WVU's Jason Luster (5-10) into overtime before dropping an 8-6 decision in sudden victory. Fuller saw his record fall to 7-12.
Johnny Greisheimer snapped a string of four losses in five matches with a 6-3 decision over Ross Renzi (6-14) at 165 lbs. The junior is now 16-12.
WVU closed to 20-9 with a win at 174 lbs. as Bubba Scheffel (9-5) claimed an 8-2 decision over redshirt freshman
Patrick Jennings (12-22).
Edinboro closed out the win with victories in the last three matches. Freshman Vince Pickett claimed his 20
th win of the season as he won a 3-1 decision over Lance Bryson, a deceiving 7-13, at 184 lbs. Pickett is now 20-14.
Warren Bosch outlasted Mark Colabucci at 197 lbs. by a 7-5 decision, as the redshirt freshman improved his record to 13-16.
Ernest James ended the evening with a 3-0 decision over Phil Mandzik (8-16) at heavyweight. That give the 19
th-ranked junior a 21-10 ledger.
Edinboro will now head back to the practice room to prepare for the upcoming EWL Championships, set for Saturday, March 9 at Edinboro.
