The Match Stories
A youthful Edinboro wrestling team will make its home debut on Sunday, November 13, as the Fighting Scots host former EWL rival Pittsburgh. the match is set to get underway at 1 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. This will mark the second straight match against a ranked opponent, as the Panthers are ranked 22nd in the latest USA?Today/NWCA?Division I Coaches' Poll. Edinboro opened the season with a 24-13 loss at sixth-ranked Virginia Tech. While not ranked in the NWCA?poll, Edinboro is ranked 20th in the InterMat Dual Mett rankings.
The Fighting Scots come off an 8-11 finish a year ago, winning the EWL regular season crown before finishing in a tie for 32nd place at the NCAA Division I National Championships. It's a new-look Edinboro squad, as head coach
Tim Flynn's squad returns just four starters. However, all four are returning national qualifiers and are nationally-ranked in the preseason polls. Flynn sent a young group of wrestlers to the mat at Virginia Tech, with one true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen, plus a sophomore and two redshirt sophomores in the anticipated lineup. That lineup is expected to get a little younger against Pittsburgh, with freshman
Ozzy Lugo expected to start at 141 lbs.
Chase Delande is the lone senior in the lineup, and the redshirt senior is in his first year as a starter at 157 lbs.
Pittsburgh opened the season last week in the Mountaineer Duals at West Virginia. The Panthers of head coach Jason Peters defeated Ohio, 21-16, then won a 21-13 decision over Campbell. Pitt returned four national qualifiers from last year's squad. The Panthers have three wrestlers currently ranked, led by Dom Forys at 133 lbs. The junior reached the Round of 12 last year at Natuionals and is a two-time NCAA qualifier. He is ranked eighth by InterMat. Heavyweight Ryan Solomon is 14th at heavyweight and TeShan Campbell is 19th at 165 lbs.
Edinboro remained in Virginia after the Virginia Tech match and wrestled in the Southeast Open on Sunday. A total of ten wrestlers placed -- five in the open division and five more in the freshmen-sophomore division.
Sean Russell won the title at 125 lbs. in the open division, with
Patricio Lugo and
Austin Matthews finishing third at 149 and 165 lbs., respectively. Heavyweight
Billy Miller took home fifth place, while
Chase Delande was sixth at 157 lbs. In the freshman-sophomore division, true freshman
Dakota Geer captured first place at 184 lbs. Redshirt freshman
Andrew Shomers placed second at 157 lbs. and
Fritz Hoehn was third at 165 lbs. Two more redshirt freshmen,
Korbin Myers and
Dylan Reynolds, finished fifth at 133 and 197 lbs., respectively.
Two of Sunday's matches will feature a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers. At 165 lbs.,
Austin Matthews is ranked 11th by InterMat, while Pitt's TeShan Campbell is 19th.
Billy Miller and Pitt's Ryan Solomon will square off at heavyweight. Miller is ranked 16th and Solomon 14th. A year, Solomon won a 2-1 decision.
The Fighting Scots will return home to face Lehigh on Saturday, November 19 at 3 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.

EDINBORO -- Tim Flynn (Penn State '86) is in his 20th season as the helm of the Fighting Scots. He has elevated the Edinboro program to one of the best in the country, compiling a 206-85-5 record. Edinboro has had 13 top-20 finishes and five in the top ten at the NCAA?Division I?National Championships during his tenure. That includes the two best finishes in school history in 2014 and 2015. The Fighting Scots made the podium for the first time at Nationals with a third place showing two years ago, and in 2014 they were fifth. PITTSBURGH -- Jason Peters (East Stroudsburg '98) replaced long-time head coach Rande Stottlemyre after the 2012-13 season after serving as an assistant coach for the Panthers for ten seasons. He helped lead Pittsburgh to three straight EWL?Tournament titles and in his first season guided the Panthers in their inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Pittsburgh won the ACC?dual championship and went on to finish 22nd at Nationals, ending the year with a 13-3 record. Two years ago the Panthers were 8-8 in duals and came in 21st at Nationals. They went 10-7 last year. He owns a 35-18 record and is in his fifth year at the helm.
