BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Edinboro wrestling team opened the season with a 24-13 loss at sixth-ranked Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum. The Fighting Scots will remain in Virginia on Sunday and compete in the Southeast Open.
The highlight of the match featured bouts at 125 and 149 lbs. between two nationally-ranked wrestlers. The 125 lb. match featured 18
th-ranked
Sean Russell against VTU's third-ranked Joey Dance. Dance prevailed by a 3-1 decision, thanks to a first-period takedown. The two exchanged escapes in the second and third periods.
At 149 lbs.,
Patricio Lugo was seconds away from upsetting seventh-ranked Solomon Chishko, who finished sixth at 141 lbs. a year ago. Following a scoreless first quarter, Chishko grabbed a 1-0 lead with an escape. A wild third period saw Lugo leading late in the period at 5-3, but Chischko recorded the tying takedown at the buzzer. The Hokie picked up the winning takedown early in sudden victory for the 7-5 decision.
Edinboro picked up wins at 133, 165, and 285 lbs. Ninth-ranked
Austin Matthews was impressive in his first match at 165 lbs. after previously competing at 157 lbs. The redshirt junior won a 13-6 decision over Mike Ciavarro.
Korbin Myers made his debut in the starting lineup a successful one as the redshirt freshman won an impressive 15-2 major decision over Dominic Latona at 133 lbs. Sixteenth-ranked
Billy Miller won by forfeit at heavyweight.
