- AÂ young Edinboro wrestling team has survived a strong early-season schedule, and if their performance in the last two tournaments they have competed in is any indication, is ready for the rigors of the Eastern Wrestling League season. The Fighting Scots won their sixth straight PSAC championship on December 10, as five wrestlers were crowned champions. That was preceded by a 10th place showing out of 35 teams in the Las Vegas Invitational. Now they open up EWL competition, hosting Clarion. It marks the second straight year Edinboro has faced the Golden Eagles to open the EWL season. Edinboro has won the last four meetings with Clarion, including a 23-15 triumph a year ago. In addition, the Fighting Scots have claimed 17 of the last 18 meetings with the Golden Eagles.Â
- The Fighting Scots finished with 156.5 points at the 12-team 74th Annual PSAC Championships, with Lock Haven the next closest competitor with 132 points. Clarion was third with 96.5 points. Edinboro had seven wrestlers reach the finals, and five came away with titles. Sean Russell and Patricio Lugo won their second individual championships at 125 and 149 lbs., respectively. Meanwhile, three wrestlers were first-time winners -- Korbin Myers (133 lbs.), Ty Schoffstall (174 lbs.), and Dakota Geer (184 lbs.). Chase Delande (165 lbs.) and Billy Miller (hwt.) came in second, with Fritz Hoehn (165 lbs.) and Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.) fourth, and Ozzy Lugo (141 lbs.) fifth. Head coach Tim Flynn has now won 17 PSAC championships in his 20 seasons. Â In addition, Edinboro has now tied Lock Haven for the most PSAC titles with 19.Â
- Edinboro opened the season with duals against three nationally-ranked opponents. Â The Scots opened the season with a 24-13 loss at sixth-ranked Virginia Tech, then dropped a 20-16 decision to 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh in the home opener. That was followed by a 20-13 loss to 11th-ranked Lehigh.Â
- The Fighting Scots come off an 8-11 finish a year ago, winning the EWL regular season crown before finishing in a tie for 32nd place at the NCAA Division I National Championships. It's a new-look Edinboro squad, as head coach Tim Flynn's squad returns just four starters. However, all four are returning national qualifiers and are nationally-ranked. Flynn sent a young group of wrestlers to the mat at Virginia Tech, with one true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen, plus a sophomore and two redshirt sophomores. That lineup got a little younger against Pittsburgh, with freshman Ozzy Lugo getting the starting nod at 141 lbs. Chase Delande is the lone senior in the lineup, and the redshirt senior is in his first year as a starter at 157 lbs.Â
- Austin Matthews is expected to return to the Edinboro lineup after missing the PSAC Championships. It marked the third straight year the redshirt junior was unable to compete at the PSAC's, after he finished second at 157 lbs. while competing for Clarion.  Â
- The Fighting Scots finished tenth out of 35 teams at the Las Vegas Invitational. Four wrestlers placed, with Patricio Lugo finishing second at 149 lbs., Sean Russell third at 125 lbs., Austin Matthews fourth at 165 lbs., and Billy Miller sixth at heavyweight.
- The Edinboro lineup has four nationally-ranked wrestlers, according to InterMat. Patricio Lugo has moved up to seven at 149 lbs., Sean Russell is 12th at 125 lbs., and Austin Matthews and Billy Miller are 16th at 165 lbs.. and 19th at heavyweight, respectively. In addition, freshman Dakota Geer debuted two weeks ago in 20th at 184 lbs. in the WIN Magazine rankings.
- Clarion also comes in with a 0-3 record and is competing in their first EWL dual of the season. Â The Golden Eagles' lineup has one nationally-ranked wrestler in Brock Zacherl, who is ranked 19th by InterMat at 141 lbs. The redshirt sophomore was unable to defend his 2015 PSAC title due to an injury, but is expected back for the dual. Evan DeLong won the 165 lb. title at the PSAC Championships, and was selected the Outstanding Wrestler. Dom Rigous and Scot Marmoll were second at 174 and 184 lbs., respectively.
- The Clarion lineup has a pair of wrestlers with local ties. Jake Gromacki is in his first year as the starter at 125 lbs. after transferring from Pittsburgh. He is a former standout at Cathedral Prep, where he wrestled for Edinboro Hall of Famer Mike Hahesy. Evan Daley is the starter at heavyweight. The senior previously competed at Fort LeBoeuf High School.
- The Fighting Scots open up the New Year with another tough tournament, competing in the Southern Scuffle on January 1-2. Â Â

THE COACHES
EDINBORO -- Tim Flynn (Penn State '86) is in his 20th season as the helm of the Fighting Scots. Â He has elevated the Edinboro program to one of the best in the country, compiling a 206-87-5 record. Â Edinboro has had 13 top-20 finishes and five in the top ten at the NCAA Division I National Championships during his tenure. Â That includes the two best finishes in school history in 2014 and 2015. The Fighting Scots made the podium for the first time at Nationals with a third place showing two years ago, and in 2014 they were fifth. He has produced three national champions and 37 All-Americans. Â All told, Flynn has been named the EWL Coach of the Year seven times and the PSAC Coach of the Year 13 times. Three years ago, Flynn captured nearly every Coach of the Year award, including being named the NWCA NCAA Division I Coach of the Year, WIN's Dan Gable Coach of the Year, and was InterMat's Co-Coach of the Year along with Minnesota's J Robinson.
CLARION -- Keith Ferraro (Lock Haven '03) is in his third season as the head coach at Clarion. He was named head coach on December 16, 2014, after serving as interim head coach since September 25th.  He is only the eighth head wrestling coach in school history. In 2016 the Golden Eagles showed improvement in all facets during Ferraro's second season, improving by six wins in dual match play and seeing the team's first EWL individual champions in several years.  Brock Zacherl (141) and Michael Pavasko (174) claimed titles in their respective weight classes at the EWL Championships, the first time multiple Clarion wrestlers won at the event since 2012, and both qualified for the NCAA Championships. Ferraro was named Clarion's assistant coach on July 31, 2012 under Troy Letters.
