Fighting Scots Look to Celebrate Senior Day with a Season Sweep of Seton Hill

GAME STORY
Edinboro welcomes Seton Hill to town looking for a season-sweep of the Griffins on Senior Day. The Fighting Scots clinched their seventh straight PSAC Tournament berth and a home PSAC Tournament game with wins last week against Pitt-Johnstown and Clarion.
 
The Fighting Scots have won nine of their last eleven games, recording season sweeps against Mercyhurst, Slippery Rock and UPJ, and Clarion.
 
Saturday's contest is Senior Day for the Fighting Scots departing seniors Lauren Hippo and Aignee' Freeland will be honored prior to the game. Both members of the 1,000-point club, Edinboro has won 87 games, including a PSAC Championship in 2013-14, and two NCAA Tournament appearances during their four-year career.  
 
Freeland has also appeared in 116 games, scoring 1,492 points, which ranks sixth on the all-time scorers list. The York native has been a dominant down low presence for her entire career, ranking third in rebounds (928) and fourth in blocks (135). Freeland is a two-time All-PSAC West Selection.
 
Hippo has appeared in 116 games throughout her career, scoring 1,053 career points, ranking 28th all-time. The Altoona native ranks among the best 3-point shooters in program history, ranking third in 3-pt. percentage (38.9), fifth in 3-pointers (172), and sixth in 3-pt. attempts (442.) Hippo was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District recently and is now on the national ballot.
 
Edinboro won the first meeting with Seton Hill, 65-54, on January 24 after the contest was delayed a day due to Winter Storm Jonas. Edinboro looks to continue its undefeated streak against the Griffins, having won all 14 meetings by double-figures since the series began in 1990-91.
 
The Griffins enter the contest at 13-13 overall and are 9-11 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill is in a must-win mode as they hold just a one-game lead over Slippery Rock in the fight for the sixth and final playoff spot in the PSAC West. The Griffins have dropped their last three outings, but own victories over California (Pa.) and Gannon this year.
 
The Fighting Scots average 69.5 ppg., good for sixth in the PSAC, while allowing 63.5 ppg., which ranks seventh. Seton Hill comes into the contest averaging 60.0 ppg., which is 17th in the PSAC, while allowing just 62.3 ppg., the third-best figure in the conference.
 
In the season's first meeting, the Fighting Scots jumped out to an early lead and the Griffins could never recover. Edinboro took a 24-10 lead after closing out the first quarter on a 14-2 run and led the rest of the way. The Fighting Scots are 14-3 when outscoring their opponent in the first quarter.

Aignee' Freeland posted her eighth double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead Edinboro to the road win at the McKenna Center. Michelle Jahn added 16 points and five boards and Lauren Hippo totaled 14 points and six rebounds. Fueled by a 24-10 start, the Fighting Scots led 34-23 at half and grew the lead to 43-27 with 6:58 remaining in the third quarter. Seton Hill cut the Edinboro lead to just three points at 57-54 with 3:38 remaining in the game, but the Fighting Scots ended the contest on an 8-0 run to quell the comeback attempt. Edinboro shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field and was an even 50 percent (7-of-14) from beyond the arc. LAST TIME OUT
February 13, 2016 – at Edinboro 80, Clarion 49
In front of a crowd of over 800 strong, Edinboro celebrated its annual Fighting Scots Fighting Cancer Day, handing Clarion an 80-49 drubbing to clinch a home PSAC playoff game. Leading 38-27 coming out of the locker room at half time, the Fighting Scots opened the second half on a 16-4 run, including 14 unanswered points, to take a 54-31 lead. Edinboro led the rest of the way by at least 20 points, growing the lead to as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter. The Fighting Scots held Clarion to just 22 second half-points on 9-of-28 shooting, while Edinboro shot 41.9 percent from the field and 80.0 percent from beyond the arc. Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures, led by Aignee' Freeland with 18 points. Lauren Hippo added 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from deep. Michelle Jahn totaled 13 points, while Katie Fischer finished with 12 points and 10 assists for her sixth double-double of the season.

February 17, 2016 – at Mercyhurst 75, Seton Hill 60
The Griffins fell victim to a sharp-shooting Mercyhurst team at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center on Wednesday night. The Lakers connected on five treys in the first quarter as they held a 24-10 lead at the end of the opening quarter. Mercyhurst grew the lead to 36-18 at the end of the first half, but Seton Hill cut the lead to 47-42 heading into the final period after closing the third quarter on a 19-4 run. The Griffins cut the deficit to just 49-46 with 7:31 left to play, but the Lakers answered with an 8-1 run to separate themselves once again, this time for good. Seton Hill shot 39.0 percent from the field and just 3-of-17 from beyond the arc. Jenna Kaufman led the Griffins with 16 points, while Jharrin Gill added 10.  FULL BOX SCORE / FULL RECAP
 
THE HEAD COACHES
Edinboro: Stan Swank (Purdue '76, 531-291, 29th year)
Swank is in his 29th season as the head coach at Edinboro and ranks as the all-time winningest coach in PSAC history and is also the longest tenured. He owns a career record of 531-291 at Edinboro, and over the previous five seasons Edinboro had a 125-27 record.  The Fighting Scots seek their seventh straight PSAC Tournament appearance and have won three PSAC championships during that five-year span, the last coming in 2014. Swank entered the 2015-16 season tied for 12th among active Division II coaches in victories.  That figure is tied for 24th all-time in overall victories. He ranks 35th in career winning percentage (.645).  Edinboro finished with a 20-8 record a year ago, the fifth straight season with 20-or-more wins and the 11th in Swank's career. He guided the Fighting Scots to a 16-6 record in the PSAC West, good for fourth place. Edinboro defeated Seton Hill, 68-53, in the first round of the PSAC Tournament before suffering a 71-63 loss to Indiana(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. The Fighting Scots qualified for the PSAC Tournament for the sixth straight year and 11th time in the last 12 years.

Seton Hill: Mark Katarski (Pittsburgh, 38-44, 3rd year; Career Record: 93-146, 9th year)
Katarski is in his third season at the helm of the Griffins. Katarski took over Seton Hill its inaugural season in the PSAC and secured a spot in the PSAC Tournament in his 2013-14 debut season. He once again took the Griffins to the PSAC Tournament in 2014-15. Katarski has recorded more victories in his first two full seasons than the previous four head coaches at Seton Hill. Under Katarski's leadership, the Griffins are successful off the court as well, leading all 18 PSAC women's basketball teams and placing sixth on the WBCA NCAA Division II Top 25 Academic Honor Roll.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Aignee' Freeland (F, 6'3", Sr.) – a two-time All-PSAC West selection, Freeland joined the 1,000-point club as a junior. The senior forward ranks sixth on Edinboro's all-time scoring list with 1,492 career points. She is also third all-time in career rebounds with 928 boards. Heather Gates (1,301) and Montique Wade (1,113) rank first and second, respectively. Freeland is also fifth all-time in career blocks with 135. The 6'3'' forward leads the PSAC with 51 blocks this season, the 12th-most in single-season history. She also ranks seventh in the PSAC in scoring (16.3 ppg.) and eighth in rebounding (8.5 rpg.). Freeland has recorded nine double-doubles this season, good for fifth in the PSAC.
 
Lauren Hippo (G, 5'10", Sr.) – the 5'10" senior recorded her 1,000th career point recently at Gannon, joining fellow senior Aignee' Freeland in the 1,000-point club. Fittingly, her 1,000th career-point came off a 3-pointer. She is 28th on the all-time scoring list at 1,053 points and ranks among the all-time 3-point shooters in Edinboro history. Hippo is ranked third all-time in 3-point percentage at 38.9 percent, fifth in career 3-pointers made (172) and sixth in career 3-pointers attempted (442). Hippo is fourth on the team in scoring at 11.9 ppg., shooting 30.4 percent from beyond the arc. She is third the team in rebounding, averaging a career-high 5.0 rpg. Earlier this week, Hippo was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

Katie Fischer (G, 5'7", Jr.) – the transfer from Mercyhurst is in her first season at Edinboro and continues her impressive season as a Fighting Scot, leading the PSAC and ranking sixth in Division II with 6.4 assists per game. She ranks third in the nation with 167 total assists, the seventh-most in single-season history. Fischer is second on the team in scoring at 16.0 ppg., good for 11th in the PSAC. Fischer has recorded five double-digit assist games this season and posted six double-doubles.
 
Michelle Jahn (G, 5'8'', Fr.) - the five-time PSAC West Freshman of the Week has proven to be one of the most dangerous 3-pt. threats in the conference. The General McLane high school product ranks third in the PSAC with a 41.4 3-point percentage and third with 61 3-pt. field goals. Jahn's 61 3-pointers are the eighth-most in single-season history. Jahn has scored in double figures in six of the past seven contests and has recorded a 3-pt. field goal in all but four games this season. Jahn She is third on the team averaging 12.3 ppg.

Seton Hill has qualified for the PSAC Tournament both seasons since joining the conference in 2013-14. In order to make it a three-peat, the Griffins will have to hold onto their one-game lead over Slippery Rock for control of the final playoff spot in the PSAC West.
 
Seton Hill is 5-7 on the road this season, but hold road victories over both California (Pa.) and Gannon.  
 
The Griffins rely on a stout defense. Seton Hill ranks third in the PSAC in scoring defense, allowing just 62.3 ppg. Seton Hill also ranks second in field goal defense (37.2 percent) and fourth in the PSAC in 3-pt. field goal defense (28.4 percent). The Griffins have held opponents under 60 points ten times this season, going 8-2 in those contests.
 
Conversely, Seton Hill is 17th in the PSAC in scoring offense, averaging 60.0 ppg. The Griffins have scored 50 points-or-less in six contests this season. Seton Hill has just one scorer in double-figures, but six players that score at least 5.5 ppg.
 
Sophomore Jenna Kaufman is the Griffins' lone scorer in double-figures, averaging 10.4 ppg. In the first meeting with the Fighting Scots, Kaufman was the only Seton Hill player to score in double-figures, totaling 16 points and falling one rebound short of a double-double.
 
Former Villa Maria standout Lindsey Misfud is the Griffins' third leading scorer, averaging 8.0 ppg. Misfud was a teammate of Edinboro's Allison Thompson at Villa Maria.

FIGHTING SCOTS BY THE NUMBERS
 
Edinboro ranks among the leaders in Division II in several categories. The Fighting Scots are 10th in total assists (418), 14th in total blocks (122), and 16th in total rebounds (1,085). Those figures all lead the PSAC. Aignee' Freeland leads the PSAC with 51 blocks and ranks eighth in rebounding with 8.5 rpg.
 
The Fighting Scots feature a dangerous trio of 3-point shooters in Michelle Jahn, Lauren Hippo, and Katie Fischer. The trio is the first since 2013-14 to record 45 3-pointers apiece. Jahn, Hippo, and Fischer combine to account for 157 of Edinboro's 159 3-pointers. Jahn leads the trio with 61 3-pointers, the eighth most in single-season history.
 
Edinboro leads the PSAC with 418 total assists. In games the Fighting Scots recorded 15 or more assists, they are 13-3. Katie Fischer leads the PSAC and ranks sixth in Division II with 6.4 assists per game and her 167 total assists rank third in the nation and are the seventh-most in single-season history.
 
The Fighting Scots have made frequent trips to the charity stripe this season, ranking third in the PSAC with 502 free throw attempts. Edinboro is 16-3 in games where they attempt 15-or-more free throws and just 2-5 when they attempt less than 15 foul shots.
 
Edinboro has maintained a strong presence on the glass this season, ranking third in the PSAC with a +5.9 rebound margin. The Fighting Scots have been out-rebounded in just six contests this season and are 1-5 in those games.
 
HIPPO JOINS THE 1,000-POINT CLUB
Senior Lauren recorded her 1,000th career point recently at Gannon. Hippo totaled 14 points, hitting the milestone with a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter. Hippo is also one of the most prolific 3-pt. shooters in Edinboro history, ranking among the top in all 3-pt. categories. She is third on the team this season, shooting 30.4 percent from beyond the arc.

AIGNEE' FREELAND CRACKS TOP TEN IN CAREER SCORING, RANKS THIRD IN CAREER REBOUNDS, AND FOURTH IN CAREER BLOCKS
Aignee' Freeland joined the 1,000-point club as a junior and recently moved into ninth all-time on the career points list. The senior ranks seventh in the PSAC, averaging 16.3 ppg. Freeland has also been a force to be reckoned with on the glass her entire career and this season is no different. She ranks eighth in the PSAC with 8.5 rpg. and has recorded nine double-doubles this year. Freeland has turned away 51 shots this season, the 12th most in single-season history and putting her career total at 135.
