GAME STORYLINES
  • Fresh off a convincing 71-54 upset of previously unbeaten and second-ranked California(Pa.), the Fighting Scots roll into Tuesday night's contest with Seton Hill on a ten-game winning streak.
  • In Friday's win over California, the Fighting Scots held the sixth-highest scoring team in the country to a season-low 54 points. The Edinboro defense has held opponents under 60 points in eight of their ten wins. and rank third in the PSAC in scoring defense at 57.8 ppg.
  • The Edinboro defense faces another tough test Tuesday night as Seton Hill enters the contest fifth in the PSAC in scoring at 71.2 ppg. The Griffins have been held under 60 points just three times and have scored over 75 points on five occasions.
  • The Fighting Scots also boast a high-scoring offense to complement their stingy defense. Edinboro ranks a spot ahead of the Griffins in scoring offense, ranking fourth at 74.5 ppg. Edinboro has scored over 70 points in each of the past seven games, including scoring over 80 twice.
  • In order for the Griffins to snap the Fighting Scots win streak they are going to have to beat Edinboro for the first time in program history. Seton Hill has never won against Edinboro since the first meeting in the 1990-91 and have lost all 14 meetings by at least 10 points.
  • The Fighting Scots enter Tuesday's contest looking for their 11th straight victory. Edinboro has run off ten straight wins after an 0-2 start at the Carol Eckman Memorial Tournament. The ten-game winning streak is the longest since the 2011-12 squad ran off 24 in a row.
  • Edinboro has started 6-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2011-12 season. The Fighting Scots finished that season 30-2 overall and 21-1 in the conference, as well as capturing the PSAC Championship and advancing to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship.

Aignee' Freeland recorded her fourth consecutive double-double to power the Fighting Scots to the victory. Freeland scored the first two baskets of the game to give the Fighting Scots an early 4-0 lead that was boosted to 24-10 thanks to a 14-2 run with 1:16 remaining in the first quarter. Lauren Hippo started the run with a 3-pointer, followed by back-to-back threes from Michelle Jahn. Hippo capped the run with her second 3-pointer of the quarter. Seton Hill eventually cut the Edinboro lead to just three points at 57-54 with 3:38 remaining in the game, but the Fighting Scots held the Griffins scoreless the remainder of the game and closed out the game on an 8-0 run to seal the victory. Freeland led Edinboro with 21 points and 13 rebounds. She also swatted away a game-high five shots. Jahn totaled 16 points and Hippo added 14. Jenna Kaufman was the lone Griffin to score in double figures, totaling 16 points. Edinboro held Seton Hill to just 1-of-15 from beyond the arc and won the rebounding battle, 39-35.

THE COACHES
Edinboro: Stan Swank (Purdue '76, 543-294, 30th year)
  • Head coach Stan Swank is in his 30th year as head women's basketball coach at Edinboro.
  • Swank has guided the Fighting Scots to a 145-37 record the past six seasons, including six PSAC Tournament appearances, three PSAC Championships, three NCAA Tournament berths and a trip to the Elite Eight.
  • Winning is nothing to Swank as he is the winningest coach in Fighting Scots history and has had 23 winning seasons during his 29-year tenure while compiling a 543-294 overall mark. Add in four seasons as the head coach at Parkland Junior College, and Swank has 647 career collegiate victories.
  • All told under Swank, Edinboro has reached the NCAA Division II playoffs ten times, with Edinboro qualifying for the PSAC postseason tournament 21 times. On ten of those occasions, the Fighting Scots have advanced to the championship game, winning the PSAC title in 1989-90, 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2013-14.
  • In the NCAA Tournament, Swank has guided the Fighting Scots to the Final 32 four times, the Sweet 16 three times and the Elite Eight twice.
  • Swank entered the 2016-17 campaign tied for 11th among active Division II coaches in wins with 533. That figure is tied for 22nd all-time in overall victories. He ranks 37th in active career winning percentage (.646). Swank is the longest-tenured coach in the PSAC and is also the all-time leader in wins among PSAC coaches.
 
Seton Hill: Mark Katarski (California(Pa.) '00, 47-50, 4th year, 102-152, 10th year overall)
  • Head coach Mark Katarski has led the Griffins to a PSAC Tournament appearance in each of his first three seasons.
  • Katarski took over Seton Hill in its inaugural season in the PSAC and secured a spot in the PSAC Tournament in his 2013-14 debut season. 
  • Prior to Seton Hill, Katarski spent two seasons as an assistant coach for Division I Niagara and six seasons as the head coach at Division III Chatham.
  • While at Chatham, Katarski led the Cougars to their first Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament victory and back-to-back conference semifinal appearances.
 
 
LAST TIME OUT
Edinboro: December 30, 2016 – Edinboro 71, #2 California 54 (RECAP / BOX SCORE)
  • Edinboro jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led 20-11 after one quarter before Cal's pressure defense helped the Vulcans pull to within 36-33 at the half. Edinboro had led by as many as 12 points over the opening twenty minutes.
  • Cal would take their lone lead of the game early in the third quarter when Miki Glenn scored on a layup for a 37-36 lead with 8:22 left in the period. The Fighting Scots proceeded to run off the next 15 points to regain the lead for good. During that run, Edinboro held Cal scoreless for six minutes.
  • Edinboro held a Cal team which came into the game averaging 84.5 ppg., good for sixth in Division II, to a season-low 54 points.
  • Jontay Walton paced four Fighting Scots in double figures as the redshirt sophomore guard notched a career-high 23 points. Katie Fischer added 17 points, while Ciara Rosten and Nicole Johnson finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
  • The Edinboro bench proved to be a major factor, outscoring the Vulcans 30-3.
 
Seton Hill: December 30, 2016 – Slippery Rock 72, Seton Hill 59 (RECAP / BOX SCORE)
  • Leading 21-14 early in the second quarter, the Griffins were held scoreless for over five minutes as Slippery Rock scored 12 straight points to take a halftime lead of 34-31.
  • The Griffins took their final lead of the night at 40-38 late in the third quarter before The Rock ended the third on a 12-2 run to regain the lead for good.
  • Seton Hill cut the Slippery Rock lead to just one point at 52-51 with 5:49 remaining thanks to a 9-0 run to begin the fourth quarter, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.
  • Jenna Kaufman led the Griffins with 18 points, while Mariah Wells and Alexandra Hay added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
  • Chrisanna Green grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
 
EDINBORO STORYLINES
  • The Fighting Scots have won ten straight games since an 0-2 start to the season, including starting PSAC play with a 6-0 ledger for the first time since the 2011-12 season. That team finished the season at 30-2 overall and 21-1 in the conference, as well as capturing the PSAC Championship and advancing to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship.
  • The ten-game winning streak is the longest since the 2011-12 squad ran off 24 in a row.
  • Edinboro has won 14 straight home games in the friendly confines of McComb Fieldhouse dating back to last season. The Fighting Scots are 7-0 at home this season after amassing a 64-11 record at home over the past five seasons.
  • The Edinboro defense has held opponents under 60 points in eight of their ten wins, and ranks third in the PSAC in scoring defense at 57.8 ppg. In this past weekend's win over No. 2 California(Pa.), the Fighting Scots held the sixth-highest scoring team in the country to a season-low 54 points.
  • The Fighting Scots have recorded at least 10 steals in all but three games this season. Edinboro's 157 total steals ranks second in the PSAC and eighth in Division II. In addition, Edinboro has forced the opposing team into over 20 turnovers all but twice, as well. Opponents average 23.4 turnovers per game against Edinboro while the Fighting Scots average just 14.7. The Fighting Scots rank 12th in the nation in turnovers forced and fourth in turnover margin (+8.75).
  • PSAC West Preseason selection Katie Fischer leads the Edinboro offense from her point guard spot. A 2015-16 PSAC West second team selection, Fischer ranks 12th in the PSAC at 14.9 ppg. The senior leads the team and ranks sixth in the PSAC with 48 assists and third with 29 steals. Fischer also ranks fifth in the conference with 30 3-pointers.
  • Sophomore Michelle Jahn also continues to rank among the top 3-pt. shooters in the PSAC. Jahn ranks sixth in 3-pointers (28) and 3-pt. percentage (38.9 pct.). She finished her freshman campaign third in the PSAC with 71 3-pointers and second with a 40.8 3-pt. percentage. Jahn is averaging 10.5 ppg.
  • Junior transfer Ciara Rosten has scored in double figures in each of the past seven outings, including recording her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Cheyney. The 6'2'' forward has scored in double figures in all but three contests this season. She ranks second on the team with 11.2 ppg. and leads the squad with 6.8 rpg.
  • Sophomore Jontay Walton is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 9.3 ppg. off the bench. Over the past four games, Walton is averaging 14.5 ppg. and is coming off her best game as a Fighting Scot. The 5'5'' guard scored a career-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting against Cal. Walton also ranks second on the squad and fourth in the PSAC with 27 steals and averages 3.4 rpg.
  • Led by the duo of Walton and Maggie Moore, bench play has been a huge advantage for the Fighting Scots this season. Moore has registered 3.9 ppg. and 6.1 rpg. in 16.8 mpg. Sophomore Cheniya Sharpe and junior JaVannah Jackson have also provided sparks off the bench. Sharpe is averaging 3.3 ppg. and 4.6 rpg., while Jackson provides crucial defensive minutes. The bench has scored over 15 points in all but one game this season and has totaled 30-or-more points in three of the past four outings.

SETON HILL STORYLINES
  • The Griffins are off to an 8-4 start, including a 4-2 ledger in conference play after being picked to finish seventh in the Western Division in the PSAC preseason coaches' poll. The 8-4 start is the best since the Griffins joined the PSAC four seasons ago.
  • Seton Hill has relied heavily on the 3-pointer. The Griffins rank second in the PSAC in 3-pointers made (104), 3-pointers attempted (306), and 3-pointers per game (8.7), as well as ranking fourth in 3-pt. percentage (34.0 pct.).
  • Junior Jenna Kaufman leads a group of four returners that finished as the Griffins' top scorers last season. Kaufman ranks 11th in the PSAC in scoring at 15.1 ppg. The 5'11'' forward has scored in double figures in all 12 contests this season and has recorded two double-doubles.
  • Sophomore Chrisanna Green ranks second in the PSAC and 19th in Division II with 11.3 rpg. The 5'9'' forward has grabbed at least 10 rebounds in all but four games this season, including totaling over 15 boards in each of the past three outings.
  • Former Villa Maria standout Lindsey Misfud is the Griffins' fourth-leading scorer, averaging 7.1 ppg. Misfud was a teammate of Edinboro's Allison Thompson at Villa Maria.
