25th-Ranked Fighting Scots Finally Return Home, Host Lock Haven on Friday in EWL Match

  • After more than a month on the road, the Edinboro wrestling team finally returns to McComb Fieldhouse for a home dual. The Fighting Scots look to continue a run of six wins in the last seven dual matches on Friday, January 27 when they host Lock Haven in an Eastern Wrestling League match. After on 0-3 start, with all three losses to nationally-ranked teams, Edinboro has boosted their record to 6-4 and has climbed into 25th place in the latest USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll Top 25. The Fighting Scots replaced the team they beat a week ago, Rider. Edinboro is 4-0 in EWL competition and can clinch a tie for the EWL regular season crown with a win over the Bald Eagles. Edinboro has just one remaining EWL match, against Cleveland State. Lock Haven comes in with a 5-7 record and is 2-1 in the EWL. The EWL regular season champion will host a first round match in the NWCA Nationals Duals, tentatively scheduled for February 18.   
  • The Fighting Scots will put their 21-match EWL winning streak on the line against the Bald Eagles. Edinboro has not lost an EWL dual since a 19-18 defeat to Pittsburgh in their last EWL dual in 2012-13.         
  • Edinboro rang in the New Year with an impressive performance while competing against a strong field in the Southern Scuffle, followed by a 43-0 shutout at Bloomsburg and two out of three wins in the Pitt Duals.  At the Southern Scuffle, the Fighting Scots finished sixth out of 23 teams, with six of the twelve wrestlers entered earning medals.  Sean Russell (125 lbs.), Patricio Lugo (149 lbs.), and Dakota Geer (184 lbs.) brought home fourth place finishes.  Korbin Myers and Billy Miller finished seventh at 133 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively, while Chase Delande was eighth at 157 lbs. 
  • Edinboro began the season with duals against three nationally-ranked opponents.  The Fighting Scots opened with a 24-13 loss at sixth-ranked Virginia Tech, then dropped a 20-16 decision to 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh in the home opener. That was followed by a 20-13 loss to 11th-ranked Lehigh. They picked up their first win of the year with the 31-6 triumph over Clarion in their EWL opener. Edinboro's only other loss also came to a ranked opponent, as they fell to 10th-ranked North Carolina State, 24-13, at the Pitt Duals.
  • Lock Haven has lost three straight duals, with two of those setbacks to nationally-ranked teams. Two weeks ago, the Bald Eagles dropped a 31-11 decision to then 24th-ranked Virginia, and last Sunday Cornell, ranked tenth, handed Lock Haven a 31-15 defeat. The latter match was tied at 15-15 at one point. The Bald Eagles feature a lineup that includes six wrestlers with 20-or-more wins, two of whom are nationally ranked. Ronnie Perry is ranked 17th by FloWrestling at 141 lbs., while heavyweight Thomas Haines is ranked 14th by InterMat and 20th by FloWrestling. Haines is a former transfer from Ohio State. 
  • The Fighting Scots won their sixth straight PSAC Championship and 11th in the last 12 years in December. Edinboro finished with 156.5 points in the 12-team field, with Lock Haven the next closest competitor with 132 points. Edinboro had seven wrestlers reach the finals, and five came away with titles. Sean Russell and Patricio Lugo won their second individual championships at 125 and 149 lbs., respectively. Meanwhile, three wrestlers were first-time winners -- Korbin Myers (133 lbs.), Ty Schoffstall (174 lbs.), and Dakota Geer (184 lbs.). Chase Delande (165 lbs.) and Billy Miller (hwt.) came in second, with Fritz Hoehn (165 lbs.) and Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.) fourth, and Ozzy Lugo (141 lbs.) fifth. Head coach Tim Flynn has now won 17 PSAC championships in his 20 seasons.  In addition, Edinboro has now tied Lock Haven for the most PSAC titles with 19. 
  • There were three meetings between Edinboro and Lock Haven wrestlers in the PSAC Championships, with two of the meetings coming in the finals. Patricio Lugo won a 19-5 major decision over Kyle Shoop for the 149 lb. championship, and LHU's Thomas Haines used a late takedown for a 4-3 win over Billy Miller in the heavyweight finals. Ty Schoffstall and Tyler Wood met in the 174 lb. semifinals, with Schoffstall prevailing by major decision, 12-2.       
  • The Fighting Scots finished tenth out of 35 teams at the Las Vegas Invitational. Four wrestlers placed, with Patricio Lugo finishing second at 149 lbs., Sean Russell third at 125 lbs., Austin Matthews fourth at 165 lbs., and Billy Miller sixth at heavyweight.
  • The Edinboro lineup now has six nationally-ranked wrestlers, according to InterMat, with the addition of Korbin Myers and Dakota Geer in the rankings recently. Sean Russell is currently ninth at 125 lbs,. while Patricio Lugo is ranked tenth at 149 lbs. Billy Miller has moved up to 11th at heavyweight. Austin Matthews is ranked 17th at 165 lbs., while Myers and Geer are 18th at 133 and 184 lbs., respectively.
  • The Fighting Scots are back in action next Friday, February 3, hosting number one ranked Oklahoma State. The match gets underway at 7 p.m.

HEAD COACH

EDINBORO -- Tim Flynn (Penn State '86) is in his 20th season as the helm of the Fighting Scots.  He has elevated the Edinboro program to one of the best in the country, compiling a 212-88-5 record.  Edinboro has had 13 top-20 finishes and five in the top ten at the NCAA Division I National Championships during his tenure.  That includes the two best finishes in school history in 2014 and 2015. The Fighting Scots made the podium for the first time at Nationals with a third place showing two years ago, and in 2014 they were fifth. He has produced three national champions and 37 All-Americans.  All told, Flynn has been named the EWL Coach of the Year seven times and the PSAC Coach of the Year 13 times. Three years ago, Flynn captured nearly every Coach of the Year award, including being named the NWCA NCAA Division I Coach of the Year, WIN's Dan Gable Coach of the Year, and was InterMat's Co-Coach of the Year along with Minnesota's J Robinson.
