MATCH STORYLINES
  • The Edinboro wrestling team concluded their fourth straight undefeated EWL regular season last Friday night in impressive fashion, posting a 46-2 win over Cleveland State on Senior Night. The Fighting Scots have now won 23 straight EWL duals, with the last loss coming at the end of the 2012-13 season, 19-18 to Pittsburgh. While finishing at 6-0 in EWL action, the Fighting Scots are 8-5 overall, with all five losses to nationally- ranked teams.  They have won four of their last five duals, with the only loss to top-ranked Oklahoma State.
  • By virtue of winning the EWL regular season crown, Edinboro earned the right to participate in the NWCA National Duals Championships Series, presented by Theraworx and the United States Marine Corps. In the second year of its current format, eight Big Ten teams will travel to eight opponents. Edinboro will host third-ranked Iowa on Saturday, February 18 in a 7 p.m. match at McComb Fieldhouse, following a Friday night match at West Virginia. Edinboro is making its third straight appearance in the NWCA National Duals.  A year ago, Edinboro lost at Ohio State, 26-13, in the National Duals, and in 2014-15, the Fighting Scots hosted the Buckeyes, losing 30-7.
  • Head coach Tim Flynn has never been one to shy away from a tough opponent, and has put together challenging schedules for many years. But with the addition of No. 3 Iowa to this year's slate, it's hard to find a season where the Fighting Scots faced a more demanding schedule. Edinboro will now have faced five of the top 11 teams in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches poll. The Fighting Scots recently faced top-ranked Oklahoma State, opened the year against fifth-ranked Virginia Tech, faced No. 7 North Carolina State in the Pitt Duals, and hosted 11th-ranked Lehigh. In addition, Edinboro wrestled 24th-ranked Pittsburgh, and also faced a Rider team that was ranked 25th at the time.
  • Iowa last appeared at McComb Fieldhouse on December 5, 2013. With 3,152 fans jamming McComb, the Hawkeyes edged Edinboro 22-19. The match was highlighted by A.J. Schopp's 3-2 upset of top-ranked Tony Ramos at 133 lbs.  Iowa has won all seven previous meetings against Edinboro.
  • West Virginia has a 3-12 record and is 1-3 in the Big 12 following a 22-20 win over Iowa State on Sunday. The Mountaineers, under third-year head coach Sammie Henson, rallied from a 20-9 deficit with wins in the final three bouts, including a pin by Brandon Ngati at heavyweight. Their other wins came over Binghamton (22-20) and Harvard (32-9). The Mountaineers feature a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers in Jacob A. Smith at 197 lbs. and Dylan Cottrell at 165 lbs. Smith is a two-time national qualifier who is ranked fifth by InterMat with a 16-4 record.  Cottrell is ranked 11th by InterMat and comes in with a 13-4 record. He is also a two-time national qualifier.
  • The WVU lineup features two wrestlers familiar to local fans. Joe Wheeling, the starter at 133 lbs., wrestled at nearby General McLane High School. The sophomore has a 6-14 record. Redshirt freshman Devin Brown won a PIAA state championship as a sophomore at Saegertown High School. He transferred after that to compete at Franklin Regional High School. Brown is also 6-14 as the starter at 125 lbs.
  • As usual, Iowa showcases a powerful lineup under legendary head coach Tom Brands. The Hawkeyes are 11-2 overall and finished second in the Big 10 with an 8-1 ledger. Their only losses came in a six-day span to top-ranked Oklahoma State, 24-11, and No. 2 Penn State, 26-11. Among their victories is a 21-13 win over fourth-ranked Ohio State, and a 27-9 win over sixth-ranked Nebraska. The Hawkeyes have eight nationally-ranked wrestlers, including five ranked in the top five. That includes top-ranked Thomas Gilman at 125 lbs., plus second-ranked Michael Kemerer (157 lbs.) and third-ranked Branden Sorensen and Sammy Brooks at 149 and 184 lbs., respectively.  Cory Clark, ranked fifth at 133 lbs., is a three-time All-American, while Gilman and Sorensen are two-time All-Americans, and Brooks and Alex Meyers earned All-American accolades a year ago.
  • Edinboro rang in the New Year with an impressive performance while competing against a strong field in the Southern Scuffle. The Fighting Scots finished sixth out of 23 teams, with six of the twelve wrestlers entered earning medals.  Sean Russell (125 lbs.), Patricio Lugo (149 lbs.), and Dakota Geer (184 lbs.) brought home fourth place finishes.  Korbin Myers and Billy Miller finished seventh at 133 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively, while Chase Delande was eighth at 157 lbs. Oklahoma State won the team title.
  • All five of Edinboro losses this season have been to nationally-ranked teams. The Fighting Scots began the season with duals against three nationally-ranked opponents.  They opened with a 24-13 loss at sixth-ranked Virginia Tech, then dropped a 20-16 decision to 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh in the home opener. That was followed by a 20-13 loss to 11th-ranked Lehigh. Edinboro would later fall to 10th-ranked North Carolina State, 24-13, at the Pitt Duals, and last Friday suffered a 24-12 defeat to top-ranked Oklahoma State. Edinboro owns a 22-10 win over 25th-ranked Rider.    .
  • The Fighting Scots won their sixth straight PSAC Championship and 11th in the last 12 years in December. Edinboro finished with 156.5 points in the 12-team field, with Lock Haven the next closest competitor with 132 points. Edinboro had seven wrestlers reach the finals, and five came away with titles. Sean Russell and Patricio Lugo won their second individual championships at 125 and 149 lbs., respectively. Meanwhile, three wrestlers were first-time winners -- Korbin Myers (133 lbs.), Ty Schoffstall (174 lbs.), and Dakota Geer (184 lbs.). Chase Delande (165 lbs.) and Billy Miller (hwt.) came in second, with Fritz Hoehn (165 lbs.) and Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.) fourth, and Ozzy Lugo (141 lbs.) fifth. Head coach Tim Flynn has now won 17 PSAC championships in his 20 seasons.  In addition, Edinboro has now tied Lock Haven for the most PSAC titles with 19.
  • The Fighting Scots finished tenth out of 35 teams at the Las Vegas Invitational. Four wrestlers placed, with Patricio Lugo finishing second at 149 lbs., Sean Russell third at 125 lbs., Austin Matthews fourth at 165 lbs., and Billy Miller sixth at heavyweight. Oklahoma State finished first.
  • The Edinboro lineup has six nationally-ranked wrestlers, according to InterMat. Sean Russell is currently ninth at 125 lbs., while Patricio Lugo is ranked 11th at 149 lbs. Austin Matthews is 12th at 165 lbs., with Billy Miller 13th at heavyweight. Freshman Dakota Geer is ranked 17th at 184 lbs., while redshirt freshman Korbin Myers is 19th at 133 lbs.
  • The Fighting Scots will get a brief break before looking to reclaim the EWL Championship on Saturday, March 4. Bloomsburg will host the tournament, with Edinboro seeking its third in the last four years after finishing second to Rider a year ago.
