Lugo Upsets Third-Ranked Sorensen as No. 23 Fighting Scots Fall to No. 3 Iowa 28-9 in NWCA National Duals

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team picked up a monumental win by Patricio Lugo, along with victories from Austin Matthews and Billy Miller, but it was not enough as the 23rd-ranked Fighting Scots suffered a 28-9 loss to third-ranked Iowa in the NWCA National Duals on Saturday night. A crowd of 2,135 took in the match at McComb Fieldhouse.

Edinboro finishes the dual season at 9-6, with all six losses to nationally-ranked teams, while Iowa is 13-2. The Hawkeyes finished as the Big 10 runnerup. Edinboro's schedule included five teams in the National Duals – top-ranked Oklahoma State, No. 3 Iowa, No. 5 Virginia Tech, No. 7 North Carolina State, and No. 12 Lehigh.

While the night did not go as well as head coach Tim Flynn would have hoped, the Fighting Scots came away with three wins, including the top career triumph for Patricia Lugo. Ranked 11th at 149 lbs., the sophomore was paired against third-ranked and two-time All-American Brandon Sorensen.

Lugo grabbed a 4-2 lead after one period with a pair of takedowns. The lone point in the second period was a Lugo escape. Sorenson accounted for all the scoring in the third period, with a quick escape and a tying takedown with just five seconds left to make it 5-5. Lugo would prevail 7-5 in sudden victory with the winning takedown with ten seconds remaining. Lugo improved to 27-7 while Sorensen is now 22-3.

Matthews (16-6) faced his second ranked wrestler in two nights when he took the mat at 165 lbs. The redshirt junior, ranked 12th, would post a 4-1 decision over 17th-ranked Joey Gunther (17-6). Matthews led 2-1 after one period following a takedown with just under a minute left. His escape was the lone point in the second period, and he rode out Gunther in the third to finish with 2:12 in riding time.

Miller accounted for Edinboro's final win, posting a 6-1 decision over Steven Holloway at heavyweight. The redshirt sophomore had a takedown in each of the first two periods and led 5-1 going into the final period. He rode out Holloway in the third to finish with 2:38 in riding time. Miller is now 28-9.

While not picking up the win, Ty Schoffstall (17-9) put quite a scare into 11th-ranked Alex Meyer (20-5) at 174 lbs. Schoffstall would register three takedowns in the first two minutes for a 6-2 lead, but Meyer closed the deficit to 6-5 after three minutes. An escape and takedown gave Meyer an 8-6 lead, with an escape pulling Schoffstall to 8-7. Meyer would make it 10-7 with a takedown with just two seconds left in the period. Meyer rode out Schoffstall in the third period to gain riding time in an 11-7 decision.

The match got underway with a pair of matches between nationally-ranked wrestlers, with Iowa picking up major decisions in both. At 125 lbs., top-ranked Thomas Gilman remained undefeated with a 10-2 major decision over ninth-ranked Sean Russell (29-6). Russell saw his ten-match winning streak come to an end.

Fifth-ranked Cory Clark (12-2) followed with a 10-1 major decision over 19th-ranked Korbin Myers (27-10) at 133 lbs. The Hawkeyes built their lead to 14-0 as Topher Carton (21-6), ranked 13th at 141 lbs., won by a fall from the neutral position at 1:59 over Nate Hagan (14-13).

At 157 lbs., second-ranked Michael Kemerer (25-1) won a 16-6 major decision over Chase Delande (19-15). The 184 lb. bout was the fifth between two nationally-ranked foes, with third-ranked Sammy Brooks (21-2) handing freshman Dakota Geer, ranked 17th, a 14-4 defeat. Geer is now 26-8.

Iowa's Cash Wilcke (14-8) won a 6-2 decision over Dylan Reynolds (6-2) at 197 lbs.

Edinboro will now get ready for the upcoming EWL Championships, set for Saturday, March 4 at Bloomsburg.
