MATCH STORYLINES
  • Head coach Tim Flynn will bring a contingent of eight wrestlers to St. Louis' Scottrade Center for the 2017 NCAA Division I National Championships. Seven of the eight finished as automatic qualifiers at the recent EWL Championships, which Edinboro won for the third time in the last four years and 15th time in Flynn's 20 seasons as head coach. A school-record six Edinboro wrestlers won EWL titles. Flynn received a pleasant surprise last Friday when an injury opened up a spot at 157 lbs. As the number one alternate at that weight class, Chase Delande became the eighth Fighting Scot headed to St. Louis.
  • Edinboro had enjoyed back-to-back record-setting runs the last two years at the NCAA Division I National Championships before a young 2016 squad settled for 32nd place   In 2014, the Fighting Scots finished fifth in the team race, the best in school history. In 2015, they bettered that by reaching the podium for the first time with a third place finish in St. Louis, along with a record-tying four All-Americans. A year ago, Edinboro saw an impressive string come to an end as the Fighting Scots finished without an All-American for the first time since 1996. That is the first time Tim Flynn did not have an All-American as head coach. True freshman Patricio Lugo came up one win shy of All-American honors, reaching the round of 12.
  • The ESPN network will once again televise all sessions of the NCAA Division I National Championships. ESPN will televise live all the prime time sessions -- the second round, semifinals, and finals. ESPNU will televise the first session, quarterfinals, and medal round. ESPN3 will show all the sessions, with viewers able to choose from all eight mats.  The event runs from Thursday, March 16 to Saturday, March 18.
  • Five of Edinboro's eight wrestlers earned seeds for Nationals. Leading the way is Sean Russell, who is the number seven seed at 125 lbs. after winning his second EWL crown. He is making his second trip to Nationals and has a 32-6 record. Patricio Lugo is also making his second trip to Nationals after reaching the Round of 12 a year ago. He is seeded eighth at 149 lbs. with a 30-7 record. He won his first EWL crown. Austin Matthews and Billy Miller are seeded 12th at 165 and 285 lbs., respectively. Matthews is making his third appearance at Nationals, but the first at 165 lbs. He qualified once at 157 lbs. while competing for Clarion and a year ago as a Fighting Scot. He comes in with an 18-7 record after placing second at EWL's. Miller has a 31-9 record following his EWL championship. The redshirt sophomore is making his second trip to Nationals. Dakota Geer has enjoyed an outstanding freshman campaign at 184 lbs. The EWL champion is seeded 14th with a 29-8 record.
  • Edinboro set a school record with six EWL champions while winning the team title for the third time in the last four years and 15th in head coach Tim Flynn's 20 seasons. The six champions fell one shy of Penn State's record seven champions in 1992. Sean Russell became a two-time champion at 125 lbs., while Korbin Myers (133 lbs.), Patricio Lugo (149 lbs.), Ty Schoffstall (174 lbs.), Dakota Geer (184 lbs.), and Billy Miller (hwt.) all won for the first time.  Austin Matthews was in search of his third EWL title but had to settle for second place at 176 lbs.  Chase Delande also finished second at 157 lbs., with Dylan Reynolds placing fourth at 197 lbs.
  • Edinboro concluded their fourth straight undefeated EWL regular season in impressive fashion, posting a 46-2 win over Cleveland State on Senior Night. The Fighting Scots have won 23 straight EWL duals, with the last loss coming at the end of the 2012-13 season.
  • By virtue of winning the EWL regular season crown, Edinboro earned the right to participate in the NWCA National Duals Championships Series, presented by Theraworx and the United States Marine Corps. Edinboro made its third straight appearance in the NWCA National Duals, suffering a 28-9 loss to third-ranked Iowa.
  • Edinboro rang in the New Year with an impressive performance while competing against a strong field in the Southern Scuffle. The Fighting Scots finished sixth out of 23 teams, with six of the twelve wrestlers entered earning medals.  Sean Russell (125 lbs.), Patricio Lugo (149 lbs.), and Dakota Geer (184 lbs.) brought home fourth place finishes.  Korbin Myers and Billy Miller finished seventh at 133 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively, while Chase Delande was eighth at 157 lbs. Oklahoma State won the team title.
  • Head coach Tim Flynn has never been one to shy away from a tough opponent, and has put together challenging schedules for many years. The addition of No. 3 Iowa to this year's slate may have made the 2016-17 schedule the most difficult ever faced by an Edinboro team. The Fighting Scots faced five of the top 11 teams in the final USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches poll. The Fighting Scots wrestled second-ranked Oklahoma State, third-ranked Iowa, opened the year against fourth-ranked Virginia Tech, faced No. 8 North Carolina State in the Pitt Duals, and hosted 11th-ranked Lehigh. In addition, Edinboro wrestled 23rd-ranked Pittsburgh, and also faced a Rider team that was ranked 25th at the time.
  • Edinboro finished 9-6 overall and 6-0 in EWL action, with all six of Edinboro's losses against nationally-ranked teams. The Fighting Scots began the season with duals against three nationally-ranked opponents.  They opened with a 24-13 loss at Virginia Tech, ranked sixth at the time, then dropped a 20-16 decision to 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh in the home opener. That was followed by a 20-13 loss to 11th-ranked Lehigh. Edinboro would later fall to then 10th-ranked North Carolina State, 24-13, at the Pitt Duals, and later suffered a 24-12 defeat to top-ranked Oklahoma State. In the NWCA National Duals, No. 3 Iowa defeated the Scots, 28-9. Edinboro owns a 22-10 win over then 25th-ranked Rider.  Edinboro finished 22nd in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll and is ranked 19th in InterMat's Tournament Rankings.
  • The Fighting Scots won their sixth straight PSAC Championship and 11th in the last 12 years in December. Edinboro finished with 156.5 points in the 12-team field, with Lock Haven the next closest competitor with 132 points. Edinboro had seven wrestlers reach the finals, and five came away with titles. Sean Russell and Patricio Lugo won their second individual championships at 125 and 149 lbs., respectively. Meanwhile, three wrestlers were first-time winners -- Korbin Myers (133 lbs.), Ty Schoffstall (174 lbs.), and Dakota Geer (184 lbs.). Chase Delande (165 lbs.) and Billy Miller (hwt.) came in second, with Fritz Hoehn (165 lbs.) and Dylan Reynolds (197 lbs.) fourth, and Ozzy Lugo (141 lbs.) fifth. Head coach Tim Flynn has now won 17 PSAC championships in his 20 seasons.  In addition, Edinboro has now tied Lock Haven for the most PSAC titles with 19.
  • The Fighting Scots finished tenth out of 35 teams at the Las Vegas Invitational. Four wrestlers placed, with Patricio Lugo finishing second at 149 lbs., Sean Russell third at 125 lbs., Austin Matthews fourth at 165 lbs., and Billy Miller sixth at heavyweight. Oklahoma State finished first.

HEAD COACH

EDINBORO -- Tim Flynn (Penn State '86) is in his 20th season as the helm of the Fighting Scots.  He has elevated the Edinboro program to one of the best in the country, compiling a 215-90-5 record.  Edinboro has had 13 top-20 finishes and five in the top ten at the NCAA Division I National Championships during his tenure.  That includes the two best finishes in school history in 2014 and 2015. The Fighting Scots made the podium for the first time at Nationals with a third place showing two years ago, and in 2014 they were fifth. He has produced three national champions and 37 All-Americans.  All told, Flynn has been named the EWL Coach of the Year seven times and the PSAC Coach of the Year 13 times. Three years ago, Flynn captured nearly every Coach of the Year award, including being named the NWCA NCAA Division I Coach of the Year, WIN's Dan Gable Coach of the Year, and was InterMat's Co-Coach of the Year along with Minnesota's J Robinson.
