Box Score (New/Sortable Format) EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team used a suffocating defense and balanced offense to advance to the PSAC Final Four with an 89-45 win over California(Pa.) on Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The 11th-ranked Fighting Scots, the number two seed in the Western Division, improved to 24-3 with the quarterfinal win, while third-seed Cal, ranked 24th, dropped to 24-6.
Edinboro is ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Division Atlantic Region rankings which were released earlier today, while the Vulcans were sixth in the region. The victory boosts the Fighting Scots' chances of making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.
IUP, the top seed in the PSAC West, will host the PSAC Final Four on Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4. The Fighting Scots will face West Chester, the top seed out of the Eastern Division, on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Kovalchick Complex. The Golden Rams are 23-4 and riding an 18-game winning streak. The second semifinal will follow at 3:30 p.m. with IUP (26-2) hosting Millersville (17-11), the number three seed from the East. The winners will face off at 3 p.m. on Sunday for the 2018 PSAC championship.
Mixed in with the celebration of the quarterfinal win was a milestone by
Michelle Jahn. The junior guard became the 27th player to score 1,000 career points for the Fighting Scots. She finished with a game-high 21 points to boost her career total to 1,008. She reached the magical mark on a layup and free throw with 31 seconds left in the first half.
Edinboro got off to a fast start and never looked back on Wednesday night. The Fighting Scots scored the first 15 points of the game before Cal finally got on the board with 2:42 remaining in the first quarter on a layup by Jiahna Flood-Francis. Jahn had five points and
Jontay Walton four in the dominating getaway.
While holding Cal scoreless for over seven minutes, the Edinboro defense forced Cal to miss its first nine shots and turn the ball over four times. Shatara Parsons, the PSAC's second-leading scorer at 21.6 ppg., missed her first 11 shots and went just 3-of-19, finishing with eight points.
???????Edinboro would lead 18-4 after one period of play, holding Cal to 2-of-13 from the floor. The Fighting Scots outscored the Vulcans, 22-6, in the second quarter for a 40-10 lead. Cal made just 4-of-31 shots in the first half (12.9 pct.) with 10 turnovers. Edinboro also held a 28-16 rebounding advantage.
Any hopes Cal had of a second-half comeback quickly vanished as Edinboro scored the first six points of the second half on a
Ciara Rosten jumper, two
Michaela Barnes' free throws, and a Jahn layup. That made it 46-10 with 6:49 to play in the third quarter.
???????Edinboro led 66-27 after three quarters. The lead reached its high-water mark with 5:24 remaining as
Allison Thompson's layup gave Edinboro a 47-point lead at 77-30.
Ciara Rosten records 17th double-double
of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
She also blocked seven shots.
The Fighting Scots featured five players in double figures. Jahn had a game-high 21 points, making 7-of-14 field goals, including 4-of-8 3-pointers, and 3-of-3 free throws. She added three steals.
Barnes added 14 points while sitting out a good portion of the first half with two fouls.
Ayana Vaughn came off the bench to contribute 13 points, and even blocked three shots. Walton finished with 12 points.
???????Rosten, meanwhile had another dominating performance in the paint. The 6'2" senior had her 17th double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, and she accounted for seven of Edinboro's 10 blocks. Rosten now has a school-record 105 blocks on the season. In addition, her 318 rebounds ranks eighth in a season.
???????Edinboro shot 50.8 percent from the floor (31-of-61), including 6-of-13 on 3-pointers, and made 21-of-24 free throws. Cal was held to 25.8 percent (17-of-66), making 4-of-12 3-pointers, and going 7-of-14 at the line.
The Fighting Scots held a 52-31 advantage on the glass, with
Whitney Allen pulling down 13 boards. The Fighting Scots committed 15 turnovers and Cal 14. Edinboro outscored Cal, 46-22, in the paint.
Emily Suckling led Cal with 10 points.
